The 5.7mm will also work with your DPMS lower ;)

I know what you mean on the older rifles. I want to get a Springfield M1A at some point, but I'd want to drop it into a Troy MCS stock. Next range day I'll turn you loose on my LMT and you can give it a try.

I've been wondering how you guys liked it. How was it? Who was your instructor and how many did you have in your class? How did Katie like it? Did you get your paperwork into the Sheriffs office yet?

I'm thinking this month would be a great month for an outing :)

We loved it! Tom Lund and Dale Walz were the instructors. I think the class had twenty people in it, young, old, men and women. Katie did fine as we all knew she would. I'm really happy she took the course with us. We went to the sheriff right away monday and are now just waiting patiently.

If anyone else is interested in a day of shooting let us know. Even if you have never held a gun I'm sure there are a few people around here that can teach you in a fun and safe way. I'm not an expert on everthing but have a small variety of firearms that I'm willing to share with others.

You will not regret getting a rifle styled of the the good ole' M1 Garand. I love my M1A, and have been kicking around the idea of getting a Garand. Although you do need to watch out so you dont get a bad case of M1 Thumb.

Congrats! I might be up for another outing at some point. I am just out of ammo :-(

This has been floating around for a couple years now. I'm surprised they couldn't find any real news to report. All of the bible verses have to deal with light, which I think is rather appropriate considering they're a day/night optic. I have an idea, let them keep doing that and have Black Hills Ammunition inscribe Koran verses onto each round of Mk262 Mod 1 that they send to our troops overseas. Things will even out. I'd buy one in a heartbeat if I had the coin, bible verses or no.

Ben, I'd be up for Circle Pines after the Super Bowl. I need to get my rifle zeroed for 50 yards.

    What do you mean "uptight"?

Anything goes, as long as it isn't steel shot or being fired from the hip. Or did you get a pistol grip shotgun?

They wanted them fired from the shoulder, not the hip. They don't want the clips to get shot, and when you're firing from the hip you can't really aim it well. I've had my shotgun out every time I've been to Bills and I've never had a problem with them.

Ha! that's the right attitude. If me, Brian and Jason could get away with our simultaneous shotgun song and dance with a bunch of slugs mixed in like last time, I'm sure they wouldn't mind one more at the range.

They're fine with slugs, they do .50cal shoots at Bills and those are a hell of a lot more powerful than even magnum slugs. The only thing they were getting bent out of shape about was shooting Jasons Mossberg from the hip because they didn't want the clips to get broken. And yes, a quartet of shotguns would be fun as hell. Better yet, a quartet of rifles ;)

I wonder if Nate would be willing to have another shoot at his house. We could really slaughter some plywood with 5 or 6 shotguns on line...

The way ammo prices have gone, 12Ga would be the cheapest thing I would have to shoot.

Brian have you ever tried shooting clay pigeons with your 870? I am kind of curious how the barrel patterns for that. I might need to grab an extra barrel for trap.

Yes, shooting from the hip makes them unhappy. The alternative of shooting a pistol gripped shotty at eye level is always there, but as we found out, doing so with full buck in the chamber tends to kick the gun into your face. I split my lip open. I'd much rather go from the hip in an open field with plywood targets. Though i've been tossing around the idea of getting a fold-over stock (over the top). I want one made of metal though, so far all I can find is crappy plastic ones...and the reviews say the 5 shot holder on the foldover part tends to drop them when firing.

That SpecOps is the exact same one I was about to recommend. Jason, another option if you want to keep the pistol grip is the Breachers grip by Knoxx (Blackhawk). Think my stock as far as recoil reduction.

Martin, I haven't tried to shoot trap with mine but I'm thinking it wouldn't do all that well. Short barrel + open choke doesn't make for a very good pattern at long distance. You'd want to pick up a longer barrel with an adjustable choke most likely.

This was my concern. Although I had some hope since I thought the 870s came with a modified Remchoke or whatever. I know nothing about shotgun chokes, so I might need to do some reading.

99% of 870s come with choke tubes in the end of the barrel. Mine did, and it was a cheap version. Anything from improved cylinder to an extended turkey full choke can slide in the end of that gun.

Also: Its no big deal as they can be easily switched out in under a minute and they're really not expensive.

870 Police Magnums are open (Improved Cylinder) chokes and do not have an actual choke in the end of the barrel.

For a trap barrel I'd pick up as long a barrel as you can, I think you can get a 28" that will fit on there just fine. I like the fiberoptic sights for contrast vs a bead.

Eli, I know you can rebarrel them, I'm just referring to the stock 18in barrel that they come with ;)

Martin, for clays you could also look into a Wingmaster, I've seen some beautiful used ones at Cabelas, and they're usually pretty cheap and the actions on them are smoother than butter, especially the older ones.

Okay good to know. I will be on the look out for barrels than. I have considered the wingmaster but have decided against it for several reasons. I have pretty much narrowed it down to I want a 870 PM w/ an extra barrel for trap. that would cover all of my shotgun shooting needs.

I was doing some reading on different types of shot and came across this:

    View attachment 20244

They actually made these (well I think Wilson Arms did) the WP870 (witness protection). 12.5" barrel 24.5" overall length, with a custom choke designed for use of #4 buckshot at close range. They were typically carried in a shoulder holster.

I found it neat since you dont (or atleast I dont) see actual short barreled shotguns very often.

Remington actually makes several short barrel versions of the 870, down to 10" IIRC. They're used as low profile breaching shotguns for Military/LE units.

Just got the call from Streichers today, I have a mystery gun waiting for me. A burrito to the first person to guess it. A hint: I swore I'd never buy one of these.

I'm also debating getting a Lewis Machine and Tool MRP chambered in .308. The debate right now is whether or not I want to drop 2200 bucks on a new rifle right now.

Anyone up for shooting next weekend?

You bought a Glock didnt you? As for you LMT, I think everyone needs atleast one gun chambered in 7.62x51 if not more than one.

I might be up for shooting next weekend. I need to run out to the local gun store here today or tomorrow and see about ordering something.

    Martin, you win.

I've got a Glock 34 waiting for me right now. I'm 99% certain I'm going to take it, but I'm going to do a quick side by side with an XD and a S&W M&P. I want a 9mm pistol, and a longslide Glock could be fun.

I'll let you know what I decide on the LMT. It'll be a few months out even if I give the go ahead today.

yep, it's about that time where Brian gets a new toy. congrats on the Glock or whatever does come home with ya.

I got my 5 year permit to purchase in the mail today ;) and also ordered a crimson trace grip for Katie's revolver.

I've been diggin the new XDm 3.8 and also curious to see the .45 XDm later this year.
I saw one of these at Bill's a week or two ago and really like what I saw. I need to gather some more cash or find someone interested in my rra lower so I can get the complete one.

Martin, you can has burrito. Next time we break for food after a range day we'll hit Chipotle.

Ben, congrats on the 5 year ;)

As far as an AR goes, you may be better off looking at a different company. Most of the AR boards I've been on haven't held RRA in very high regard. IIRC Streichers still has an LMT (non-MRP) for around 1200ish, and I've been finding Colt 6940s and 6920s online for very, very reasonable prices, between 12-1400. I'll turn you loose on my LMT next time we go so you can try that out. I love the MRP platform, and the barrel quickchange is extremely convenient for cleaning. If I decide to do an SBR, it'll be a snap to change things out.

    Excellent.

I went up to Cabelas today to see what they had and there was a whole table full of 91/30 Mosin Nagants for $100 w/ all the fixings. I was pretty tempted. Does anyone have any experience with these rifles? I know they are old and Russian but thats about it.

^^^I've been eyeing those too. You know everything I know about them, you sure can't argue with the price on them. And yeah Brian I put some cash in my hand today and started having second thoughts about buying anything new in the AR platform for the moment. I've got too many ideas going through my mind right now(remodeling, motorbike, guns etc..) that maybe I'll just hold off on any major purchases for a bit.

Does a $100 gun count as a major purpose?

I did a little looking and it appears that your chances of finding one of these that is unfired is 0. Almost all of these rifles were re-arsenaled (force matched serial #s of bolt/barrel/floorplate/ect..., possibly counterbored) and put into storage for WW III. So you chances of finding one with all matching #s is very very very low, but I personally wouldn't buy one for that anyway. They are supposedly very easy to maintain and very reliable. The accuracy fall under question though, I have read about people getting 6-10" @ 100yrds and people grouping w/in 18" at 1000yrds. It does sounds like the Finnish version of these rifles (M39, made from the exact same parts) are just straight up more accurate. check out http://7.62x54r.net/ for all the info you would ever want.

My real question is how cheap can you get the ammo for. I though 7.62x54r was pretty cheap but that was before all ammo went way up in price. If it is still cheap to get I may pick one up just to plink with. Also you will NOT find any surplus ammo that is non-corrosive, it may say it is but I doubt it.
