Whats the M1 thumb? Last night I field striped and cleaned every part. Gotta love the smell of solvent and gun oil in the morning.

After a quick google search I found out what M1 thumb is. Sounds like for most it will only happen once.

I'm diggin it! I've said before I really want an old M1A,garand,carbine of some type but really need to learn a few things about the differences in wartime vs post war, ser #s, condition of certain part etc...

We need to get Katies crimson trace grip sighted in so we will definately be going to Bills in Circle Pines in the next two weekends. Is there enough interest out there to make an official thread on the next outing?

I might be up for it this weekend, I'll check with Karen.

Speaking of her, she bought me a Glock 34 for Valentines Day so I've got to get that off to the range to play with.

I've been slacking in the pics department, I'll see if I can fix that tonight.

You are correct. Its the Finn. M39. All they had at Cabela's were Russian Mosins. I picked this one up at the Gun Stop in Excelsior. It has a crack in the stock which has been fixed and it looks like the bore was never cleaned (first patch through came out rust brown :eek4:). I ran some Hoppe's Copper Solvent through it for a couple hours this afternoon and it is clearing up nicely (was still getting dirty patches when I stopped though). I can still see some gunk in the grooves which I am hoping that will come out. The lands are all nice and shiny, I am just hoping that the stuff in the grooves is just copper and not pitting. Overall I love the feel of this gun. The sights are great (easy to use and gradiated from 150m to 2000m), the action is smooth as butter, it has a healthy weight to it, and it looks better than a standard Mosin (Finnish made birch stock).

The more I read about these rifles the more I wanted one. There is a ton of history behind them. The S in the gear marker is the signifier for Sako, who made the barrel and assembled the rifle. The SK.Y is the marker for the Finnish White Guard, and only 10,000 of the M39s were made for the White Guard. All in all a pretty cool find for something sitting on the self at the local gun shop for who knows how long (asked and they had no idea). I just hope it shoots well.

The ammo isnt half bad. slightly cheaper than .308 for commercial stuff. about $0.50/shell for brown bear brass cased stuff(20pk). $0.18/shell for the surplus Russian corrosive/berdan stuff (440pk). I never knew much about the corrosive stuff, but it seems like just running a couple patches of Windex or 50/50 ammonia/water down the barrel before you case it up will get all of the corrosive salts out and then it is clean as normal.

    more pics later

Try some foaming barrel cleaner, you can find it at most gun stores. It's got a clear tube on it, just elevate the gun, put the tube at the breech end and spray until you see it coming out of the muzzle. It'll turn to liquid after 20 min or so, and you can repeat the process. Start running patches down the barrel after that, it works great on my guns.

So today I got some en-clips for the M1 and I was checking them out. As I was puting one into breach I found out about that M1 thumb. You were right Martin, it hurts like no other! Actually I got my index finger and nearly lost my finger tip. That wont happen again. Cool hearing the clip klank as it comes flying out.

Have you checked fleet farm for the ammo? Everytime I eyeball one of those rifles I check the ammo and they seem to have a decent amount of it. I'm still available for Bill's this weekend if anyone else who is interested has a preferred time. I know when the place opens seems to be the time to go but sat/sun doesn't really matter to me although Katie likes to go to church on sunday. I'm also taking friday off and could maybe play sometime then too.

I was at Bills tonight in Robbinsdale for an hour or so with Karen putting the Glock to the test.

Wow. Just wow. Easily one of my favorite pistols to shoot. It's scary accurate, and it's effortless to keep rounds in great groups. I kept 51 rounds (three mags worth) well inside the head at 25 feet, and under pretty rapid fire to boot.

It took a little bit to get used to the trigger, but once I figured out just how short the reset really was and got the timing down I fell in love with it. The 3.5lb trigger (advertised, I've seen claims that put it closer to 5lb) was great. We went through 350 rounds in short order, 17 round mags are a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to getting some 33 round mags for it and really cutting loose.

    ^Psshh... Glock owners...

lol. Glad to hear that you like it. What caliber is that one?

Also after having spent many hours cleaning my M39 I have decided that bore looks shot (pun inteded ;-) ) The lands looks nice and shiny but there isnt as much defintion on them as I would have liked and it looks like there may be some pitting from corrosive ammo. :-(. I still havent tried the foaming bore cleaner and I mean too. I still have hopes that it will shoot well, but we will have to see.

^^^I'm pretty sure his Glock is a 9mm having 17 rounds (two less than the xdm ;)) We also went to Bill's in CP yesterday, nothing real exciting but the crimson trace works well on the revolver and works fine with .357 rounds even though nobody likes shooting them.

I like shooting them, just not more than 12 or so at a time ;)

And yes, it's a 9mm. I wanted this one so I could try out Service Stock Pistol and Enhanced Service Pistol in IDPA or IPSC this year, it's something I've been wanting to do for a while now. The Glock 34/35 are mainstays in those categories as the 17L isn't allowed anymore.

Thats a nice looking Panther you have there. The barrel looks like it weighs a ton, especially with that muzzle brake on it. Is that a Gov owned shooting range?

Usually about 2-3 weeks, depending on your PD and how quickly they do the background check.

Well I had been back and forth between a 1911 style .45 and a glock .45. The 1911 won. Just picked up a SA 1911-A1. Pics to follow

I really like the classic style of these pistols, and more importantly I am comfortable and familiar with this platform.

^Very nice looking pistol! I was very tempted to pick up a Springfield 1911 a year or so ago. I still want one but I caught the XDm bug. I am looking forward to hearing how you like the GI model.

Well I put 100 rounds down range with it right after I bought it. I really like it so far. Its pretty basic but thats all I need. The next one I get might be more fancy. As for the 20th I will try to make it. I still have to zero in the M1, and put some lead down range with 1911.

I really like the Wilson Combat #47D mags in my Kimbers, they're not the cheapest but I haven't had any issues with mine. They've got a newer version that's supposed to be even more bombproof. Wilsons customer service is top notch as well.

    Nice!

I looked at one of those but decided to go with the 9mm. I've heard of too many issues with the .40S&W Glocks to want one myself (unsupported chambers have led to a number of ka-booms) but I have also heard that the 35 is one of the hot setups to make the "Major" category for IDPA. Hogue makes a great gripsleeve for those that is around 13.00 and makes the gun feel great in the hand, no slipping or sliding. I'm probably going to get a Lone Wolf 17L barrel/slide assembly at some point, and I may also get a .357SIG setup for it as well.

I picked it up on Saturday. I than took it home and took it apart. It was definitely not new, having burnt powder on the inside of the barrel, the finish on the inside of the muzzle showed excessive wear, ant there was corrosion evident by the receiver. So I brought it back to the store and returned it. I know that the manufacturer test fires the guns but 1.) they clean them after and 2.) there is no way there could be this much wear from a quick test fire. I am hoping that they will get another one, in actual new condition, in sometime soon.
