Well I picked something up today. Apparently QC at alot of manufacturers is going downhill. This one also has not been cleaned since it was test fired at the factory. Also there is the same wear on the inside of the muzzle ( I assume from test firing this is standard wear). I was talking to the guys behind the counter and they were telling me that most of the new S&W revolvers they get in are just filthy dirty. So far the cleanest guns I have gotten were both of my Springfields. Gues they are doing something right.

    anyway onto the obligatory picture.

Nice choice on the P239. I carry a P229 in .357SIG. What is yours chambered in?

Is that the Police Model or a Tactical? And why no extended mag? ;)

Let me answer the first part with a picture:

    View attachment 21499

The only PMs available new, currently, which have the parkerized finish and the Knoxx stock comes w/ rifle sights and no mag extension. I would have preferred a bead sight (the rifle sights are good but I do like the bead). I will be adding a Mag extension at some point but it is a low priority. I have started doing some research on the different ones. The scattergun technologies extension is the one used by US border patrol and coast guard IIRC and is a very good piece for a very competitive price. However I believe the only 3 shot extension that will fit flush with the 18.5" barrel is the Max100 extension from the gun connection. lots of things to look into.

IMHO everyone should be prepared for the inevitable zombie invasion ;-) But also I am going to try and pick up a 24"+ barrel for this and use it to prepare for the much more probable invasion of small orange flying discs.

Check with Hans Vang (Vangcomp.com) for a mag extension/standoff device. It's who I'm planning on going with when I put my standoff device on. His stuff is top notch.

Re-read my post...it is a P238... .38 caliber, I will most likely keep it filled with the new Hornady Critical Defense .38 JHP. I am not preparing for the zombie invation more like the Liberal Invasion if we go the route of England as far as gun rights are concerned.

My bad, I should've recognized it just from the outline (and the slide markings). I've heard great things about the Hornady ammo. I run their TAP ammo for my rifle defense loads, and I've heard great things about their pistol stuff. I just wish that they would expand the ammo selection for the Critical Defense line. I have a feeling we're a ways off from the England situation. Even Nancy Pelosi said that instead of new laws we need to start enforcing the ones we have now. Of course, she's probably remembering that the "Assault Weapons" Ban helped cost the Dems the House and Senate in 1994.

Bumping this one back from the dead. I've been out for a few weeks, but I did manage to pick up a new toy over the weekend.

I sold my Mossberg 590 (a dead ringer for the one in the pic at the top of the page) and picked up a 590A1 at Cabelas, 20in barrel with ghost ring sights (the prev owner installed a rail so I'll be looking for a Trijicon Reflex in place of the rear sight), 9 shot capacity and a Knoxx SpecOps already installed. Now I've got a companion piece to go with with my 870 Police Magnum.

    Pics to come tonight.

I was just eyeballing the S&W MP15 - 22 pistol. It is a mean looking little gun. Thought have started running through my head about converting it to a different caliber or something (.17HMR or .223).

It probably won't be able to convert to a different caliber, but it would be fun as hell to have a .17HMR AR style pistol.

I saw Bill's in robbinsdale just opened a restaurant http://www.thelodgerb.com/ I'm guessing it's in the place nextdoor to the store. Maybe it could be a shoot in the morning lunch after kinda thing? Anybody have any interest in another get together(even if it's your first time)?

I'm assuming you've got an 870 Tactical, they don't have a SWAT edition 870, just the Tactial or the Police Magnums.

I've heard good and bad things about the Sigma, I've never been crazy about S&W firearms unless it's their wheelguns. I'd love one of their M&P R8 .357 Magnums. The new M&P semiautos are great guns as well.

Ben, I did eat at the Lodge a few weeks ago, not a bad place at all. I'd be up for doing another range day at Robbinsdale followed by a lunch at the Lodge. Maybe one of the first weekends in October?

Jack, how do you like your Glock? Karen got me a 34 for Valentines Day. I'm still not crazy about the grip angle on it but it's a riot to shoot. It pains me to say it, but I may be more accurate with it than my 1911.

The 22-.40 is great. I haven't spent a lot of time behind it, but I put somewhere a little short of 200 rounds through it. Definitely not enough to have built the muscle memory close to what I have with the Beretta, but its fast, accurate, and reliable. Shot it last time I was home, and picked it up after I was already back overseas. The caliber is well matched to its ability to recoil manage, and while you may get tighter hammer pairs out of it in 9mm, it wont be by much. The sights are okay, its a glock. The accessory rails are nice I guess. It would be a great secondary for an operators rig, and is well suited as a duty carry for an officer. I'd recommend giving one some thought if you're in the market for a slightly thinner duty carry.

Currently I'm looking at the Sig 226 and the Beretta PX4 Storm.

-I've spent a lot of time with the Sig and think its phenomenal. There are guys who swear by them, and guys who swear they will never shoot one again. I was at a range with a department of state guy who blamed his weapon for his inability to shoot. I asked to shoot it, and instantly fell in love. I think a lot of it rests on my frame, my shooting experience, and my grip/hands. It was just a perfect match. The DOS guy would have traded me right then and there if they weren't both issued weapons. Maybe its a bad fit for him, or maybe he just is a terrible marksman. Either way, I want one badly.

The storm is a GREAT new Beretta, and I'm not even a Beretta fan so keep that in mind. I like that the ergonomics are nearly identical to the M9. Familiarity is everything. The polymer lower cuts tons of weight, and mag capacity is with the glocks. It has a rotating bolt assembly like the Cougar which reduces recoil up to 35% depending on the load. I've fired them in all available calibers. They are literally a point and shoot. Probably the first weapon I would recommend to anyone, even over the XD's. I don't mean to offend any of you XD guys - I love them too, but try a storm before you jump on me, really.

Subaru, whats your take on that S&W? My experience with that model left a bad taste in my mouth. The one I fired was so picky on what loads and brands it would shoot we were clearing a stoppage every 3-5 rounds. When we finally got the feeding issues resolved, we were introduced to terrible recoil management and the worst accuracy of any auto I've fired.

PLEASE say that was a bad apple, because I would like to be a fan of Smith and Wesson again.

View attachment 23176 View attachment 23175 I recently picked up a few new toys. The one is a SIAGA 12g that I put a tapco t6 stock on, and I picked up the ak this weekend. Its a romainian wasr 10, its not a high end ak but seems real solid and preaty nice. I need to get to the range this week and see how it shoots.

Ah, gotcha. You're getting good groups out of it.

When I hear spread I start thinking more along the lines of shotgun patterns (where you don't really want a lot of spread anyway).

Brian - I've been looking at getting a new rifle. Thinking sticking to the basics with a Rem700 or getting a little out of the box with a Tikka T3. Both would be chambered in either .270 or .308. I have heard rumors the Tikka's can shoot sub 1 MOA's at 100 yds. You have any other brands/models/input you can throw at me on this one?

I'm looking at something for 500+ meter shots, that will be consistently sub 7 MOA. The closer to butter I can get on the bolt the better, (the tikka is really smooth). It will obviously need rails for a scope or dot, synthetic stock, and I am absolutely cool with target barrels and set ups. I'd like to have something high enough caliber to take a deer with (minimum in MN is what, a 30 30?), but also can shoot "light" loads on varmints. I'm thinking .270 is probably the best blend. Depending on barrel length, it would be great if I can get something with a 9-11 turn ratio.

Recommendations on scopes? I'd love to drop a pile on a Leupold but I'm not planning on smacking it around. Any good words on any other brands?

Hey Jack, sorry I didn't catch this until now.

Both of those would be solid brands to go with. One of my best friends has a Tikka T3 and loves it. I haven't had a chance to shoot it, but I've handled it before and it seems like a solid piece. Eli (Shibbs) has a 700 chambered in .270 and that's a nice shooting gun. Personally, for the range you're looking for I'd be checking out either .308 or .300WSM for a rifle. You can definitely take a deer with a .270, depending on shot placement. I like .308 just for the ammo availability. Unfortunately, deer rifles and varmint rifles seem to be in different worlds. That being said, I've seen guys going after prairie dogs with Barretts chambered in .50BMG. Maybe they were up-armored prairie dogs.

How much modifying do you plan to do? The Remington 700 bolt action is pretty much the way to go for a stock action, and there are a lot of variants both from Remington and the aftermarket based on it. How much of a factor is cost?

As far as glass goes, obviously you're getting what you pay for. A good scope can really make the difference on a shot, especially out to the distances that you're hoping for. I haven't done much for research in scopes (which I should be doing because I'm hoping to have an LMT .308 in the stable in the next 6 months) but I'll do some digging and see what I can find for you.

Thanks for the info Brian! I'm definitely glad I'm getting a long head start on this, I've got a lot of looking to do.

You're right about the .308 being a great distance caliber. 300WSM is a hard stopper, but in terms of availability, I'd think the .308 has it hands down. Have you heard if the Tikka or the REM700 has difficulties accepting 7.62 NATO due to shell casing thickness? I know that 1-2mm from 5.56 to .223 wreaks havoc on some AR's, but I'm wondering if the bolt action chambers might have loose tolerances to begin with?

In terms of brand loyalty, I have none with rifles. I bring up the Tikka's and Remingtons because its what I've looked at while I was home, but I simply want something accurate that can hit hard. Anything past 300m is going to be solely for target shooting as the idea of finding a blood trail that far out is bad enough.

Modification wise, I dont really care. If I can get a rifle out of the box that I can dial in and dont have to screw with, that would be the best. I dont see myself dumping another grand into a rifle to improve my MOA when I should have started with spending the money on one with a good barrel.
