Keep in mind, in addition to the course fee you'll need to pay a $100 state background fee to the Sheriffs office also. Jack, if there is another deal like this I'll pick up one for you and you can spot me when you get back. I wouldn't worry too much yet about the law changing, the one in place seems to be doing pretty well, there wasn't the flood of people like originally expected.

Well, I wasn't going to post anything about my collection but when I saw this, I have to add to it. My father-in-law is a big gun guy. I'm not huge gun collector, but I love history. He got me the 2 rifles. I've found a new interest in life.. shooting history. I used to bird hunt in highschool, hence the shotgun.

    1968 Yugo SKS M59/66a1
Eddystone US Model 1917 (manufacture date of 1918 according to the serial number look-up)
Remington 20 ga 870 express (I think everyone has own/shot one of these at some point in time)

Right now i'm in the process of cleaning the 1917. Yugo took me about a month (not solid, but off and on) to clean up all the cosmoline in it. What a sticky nasty mess.

Next on my list: M1 Grand. I wouldn't mind getting a hand gun, I had my eyes on a czech made "CZ-52" (it's what the czech army was suppied with, it was made by 2 brothers who had my same last name, that's the interest)

^nice guns. The collectable ones are really cool. there is a lot of history in arms manufacturing.

just out of curiosity where are there 3 sling mounts on the 1917?

there's only two. The sling just makes it look that way.

Correct, 2. That's the original leather sling. It was in the same position for so many years that it's bent that way. I changed the lenth of the sling to fit for me and to try to get the sling to look a little more natural.

Thanks on the collection comments. I want to get out and shoot the sks here soon. I'm going to have the 1917 fully checked out after I get done cleaning to make sure it's ok to shoot. I have no clue the last time that thing was fired. The sks has never been fired.

Edit: if anyone knows anyone selling an original bayonette (spelling?) for the 1917, let me know. I know they are spendy but i'd like to try to figure out a price range.

Gimmefuel, nice taste! I really like the XDs (so much more so than a Glock), I wouldn't mind getting one of the tactical models with the 5in barrel. Gotta love a 14rd capacity. I've been hearing really good things about the new Taurus 1911s though. Might have to pick one up and see how it does.

Bumping this thread as there is a similar gun a few posts up.

:) Disclaimer* I am no gun expert.

Well my wife got a gun before me and thats got me thinkin its about time for me to purchase my first gun. I have shot a number of handguns .40s-.45s but have not shot the XDm that has caught my eye(yet) I've read online/mag reviews of the Springfield XDm .40 and have handled it in the store and liked what I felt(med backstap,2 others included). Does anyone have any experience with this gun? Or have you heard any good/bad things that I may not have heard. Just wondering. any thoughts would be greatly appreciated including other similar guns you may recommend I take a look at.

Some pics of my old M14 and a 8 pointer I shot with it. The other gun is a SAIGA .308, and is my current rifle. I sold the M14, that was a big mistake.

I bought an XDm in .40 just a few months ago. It was my first handgun purchase, but not the first one I have fired. as of now I have put maybe ~300 rounds down the tube. I love it. Granted I have only been to the range with it twice, but both times I wish I could shoot it more. The recoil is fairly sharp compared to a .45ACP but not outlandishly so. I dont find it uncomfortable to shoot.

The gun itself seems very well put together. I have no doubt that it will hold up to anything it sees for a long time. I have heard over on xdtalk.com some issues about the little piece that holds the back strap in can crack but I have not seen one cracked in person. perhaps just something to look out for. There is also talk over there about getting drop in .357Sig barrels for a multi caliber platform. The only thing that I dont really care for are the sights. I would like to put on some tritium sights just for visibility sake. If you have any questions drop me a PM, I would be glad to try and answer them.

That indeed is a big mistake. I love shooting mine. I cant wait to get to a bigger range to see how well the groups hold up at around 600yrds or so.

Nice thread. I just filed the paperwork to purchase. I need to get to the range to shoot a couple first but I'm most likely going to pick up the xd-9.

Brian - Please post up if you see another similar deal on the 870. I want one.

If you are looking at a full size I recommend checking out the XDm-9. Its ~$100 more but you get alot more nice features. Also 19+1 of 9mm.

Also Brian I too want to know if there is another deal on the Tactical 870s. I like yours and now want one of my own ;-)

Good thing you weren't at an actual range doing that, I'd have broken an arm if I saw someone with their fingers on the triggers like that. Looks like fun though.

I've fired Martins and I thought it was a decent little pistol. I've heard great things about the XDm, one of the officers I know switched from patrol to detective duty and went from a SA 1911 to the XD and really really likes it. My biggest gripe with polymer pistols is that the balance changes as you start running rounds through the mag. They go from balanced to top heavy (IMO) and I don't like that. Recoilwise that .40 is a sweetheart. My .45ACP Kimber will recoil harder, but differently. More of a push than a snap, and the extra weight of my pistol helps take some of that out. Not to mention if I run out of ammo I can still club the bastard to death ;)

As far as other guns to try, take a good long look at the Sig P250. I think that's one of the most innovative pistols out there, with the ability to change out everything from caliber to barrel/slide length to grip size. The most important thing is to find a pistol that you can reliably aim and work the controls comfortably. If you don't like holding it, you won't like shooting it. Find what's best for you, because what might work for me or Martin or Jack or anyone else may be different for you. Once you find the pistol you like, you can pick what caliber you prefer. Then make sure you practice with it and gain proficiency for your own sake.

Oh yeah, I should probably post up some pictures of my new toy :)

Some of you might recognize that as Matt's Thumper. He was kind enough to sell it to me. It looks a bit different now, I've replaced the scope with an EOTech 512 and changed out the pistol grip. I've also got a new Magpul UBR stock on the way for it, and it'll be getting a new quadrail forend with BUIS and a vertical foregrip. Later on down the line it'll get either a 3.5 or 4x magnifier on a flip to side mount. Once I start reloading I can use .45ACP bullets for both this and my Kimber :)

This warrants new pictures!!!! I am also impressed that you can load up the .450 rounds with standard .45ACP bullets. That is really cool, it cuts down on the variety of components you need to buy. I already have to buy 2 different kinds of primers, as well as 2 different kinds of bullets. I havent looked into powder but I will most likely need different kinds of that too. Then I am thinking about adding .223 to the mix, arg...

Anyone can go to Streichers, they're not a restricted shop by any means.

They usually have a few used Glocks, but not much in the way of used long guns unless they're getting them in bulk, and that doesn't happen too often.

Alright, here are some in progress pictures of my new Thumper:

New pistol grip and EOTech 512.A65 Rev F installed
    [IMG]

    Closeup of EOTech:

    Sighting picture:

For those of you not familiar with the EOTech, they're one of the new generation of holographic sights for short to medium range engagement. The great thing about them is that you don't have to be perfectly centered on the sight to align on the target, and they are a true two eyes open sight. Add on the optional magnifier and you have a longer distance optic. Since this round won't go much past 300 yards, I don't need to worry about that yet.

The .450 round is a big game round in an AR platform. It'll leave the muzzle around 2250 fps with around 2400 lb/ft of energy. A 30 round .223 mag holds 10 rounds of these, so it's quite a bit of stopping power (24,000 lb/ft) in a very controllable package. However, the fact it's built on a .223 lower gives it tremendous flexibility, as you can swap a .223, 6.5mm, 6.8mm, .458 SOCOM, .50 Beowulf or 5.45mm upper and be good to go.

Yeah, I'd like to find a decent railed .223 upper to keep the costs down when I shoot. But then I start looking at the other uppers out there, and I start to wonder what I really want. 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, 5.56mm are all appealing for different reasons. And then there's the .458 SOCOM and .50 Beowulf uppers that also look like a lot of fun as well.

Decisions decisions. I just need to win the lottery and get one of each ;)

I was looking at the Stag .223 upper: http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=696

Otherwise I saw an ad for Bravo Company in which they advertised a LMT complete upper in .223 for ~$490.

I am just in a debate if I want to go .308 or .223 for a AR. I could use the same ammo/reloading stuff for .308 but .223 is cheaper to shoot and also to get parts for. Its rough finding .308 parts especially in the setup I want to go, which is flat top upper with FA, dust cover, M4 feed ramps and a barrel with no front sight but a picanty gas block. arg... the search continues.

future additions will be a Mossberg 12g for home protection, a Walther P22 for the girlfriend to learn on, and a .22 rifle for fun outside. Probably either a .357 or a .38sp wheel gun too because wheel guns are effing awesome
