I'm going to bet it's probably around 4-6lbs. The only place I've ever seen a trigger pull weight close to that is on match weapons for the Olympics or for custom made sniper weapons (ie Military/Swat/USSS applications).

^ that is true. Get something that is naturally comfortable to shoot if it is for carry. SO you can leave it stock.

I dont intend to every carry my XDm as it is kind of big. so that trigger kit is pretty appealing to me. it takes out all of the take up slack and all of the over travel.

Slightly OT: I just read the Mall Ninja thread. It is HILARIOUS! If you havent read it yet it is a must read. It can be found here. Warning it is quite long: http://lonelymachines.org/mall-ninjas/

I definitely plan on shooting any gun that I'm looking at first but some first hand opinions never hurt. After looking into it a little further I think the S&W M&P model is more in the class that I'm looking at. As far as use, I want it mainly for fun(range and for use on my parents land) and for the near non-existent chance of a home invasion.

The M&P is a very good gun from what I have heard. Most of the reviewers put it above the XD/XDm. I am sure that if you got one you would not regret it. They have the strange hinged trigger safety thinger.

Another very nice gun is the HK45. I was neck and neck between the XDm and the HK45. The sticker shock on the HK was pretty steep. I think I will get one of those HK45s sometime though. maybe that HK45 Compact for carry.... I have to look at it again.

Well, I've got another one on layaway at Bills...

I went in tonight just to poke around and see what they have and found a Sig Sauer P229 in .357SIG with a rail and night sights. It's listed as used, but it doesn't look like it's been fired much if at all. The second mag is still in the plastic wrapper unopened, and the inside of the gun is as clean as the day it left the factory. No wear marks on the outside of the gun either. I'm still debating, but I think this one will be coming home soon, possibly by the end of the month. I've been wanting a smaller carry gun that isn't going to be too small, and I don't want to give up much in stopping power over my current .45 1911. 509.00 for a practically new gun that retails for twice that sounded like a decent deal to me, plus I can swap out the barrel with a .40S&W and shoot that with the same mags which gives me a bunch of flexibility.

Pics to follow as soon as I get it home :)

Sweet find on the .357 SIG. That is a great cartridge. You get same power as the .40 in a little smaller package. That is one heck of a steal too. Sigs are selling for $1xxx now, to get a near new one for $500 is amazing, I would have bought that up. I havent held a 229 before but I really like the 220 and 226.

The 229 is just a compact version of the 226 with all the same features. I'm still a little torn, I might get something else but I'm pretty sure this is the one I'm going to go with. The only downer is that .357SIG ammo can get really, really spendy, but I can get the drop in barrel and shoot .40S&W with the same mags, etc.

I'm finding the Sig barrels for around 150 or so online, I should check and see what a Bar-Sto will run me. I'm hearing everything from it's a softer recoiling round than .40 to it being snappier than a .40. I'll have to see, I didn't think your .40 was very hard recoiling at all.

^.40 is great to shoot. All of the main handgun calibers arnt that bad IMO. 9mm is soft, .40 is fine, ad .45 is just alittle more of a push. I could shoot any of them just fine.

The recoil characteristics of a 9mm/.40//357SIG are different than a .45, mainly due to the weight of the round and the velocity. However, the platform can make a huge difference as well, as weight will dampen out recoil and lack of weight will magnify it.

That being said, I just found a Bar-Sto 9mm conversion barrel for the Sig that will be getting ordered shortly. Nothing like being able to practice with half price ammo ;)

Good choice. I bought a PX4 in .40 last year and have been loving it. Kinda wish I went with 9mm for the increased capacity and slightly cheaper ammo.

Well, here's the latest addition, another one from Bills:

    Sig P229 in .357SIG
    [IMG]

Comparison shot for size with my Kimber TLE:

I've had it to the range twice since Friday and love it. Ammo is a bit on the spendy side, so I need to get the 9mm barrel ordered up. The balance and ergonomics are great, and it's accurate as a laser. The best part is that it weighs a lot less than my Kimber so it's easier to carry. Now I just need a 220 and a 226. I'm not sure why people think Bill's is that much more expensive than everyone else. I found this one in incredible shape for 200 less than I have any other place, and it has both a rail and night sights.

    Next up, a Ruger 10/22 ;)

Nathan, I think I speak for each of us on here who enjoys shooting that an afternoon at your place blowing the **** out of things would be highly, highly enjoyable. Just let me know when you want to and I'm sure you'll have a yard full of us ;) It'll be a little more relaxed than when we go to Bills, but we will make sure we're being safe. No William Tell re-enactments or anything like that.

When you're ready to get your gun let me know, I'm sure I can help you pick out something that you'll love.

yeah I know nothing about guns.. shot a pistol once last year.. a .45 loved it but for the cost I think a smaller cal would be great... wife is more for a shotgun if I got a gun ha ha ha, but I want a pistol, a rifle and a shotgun....

actually there is a bunch on kbid.com fairly cheap...

    Here are the rules:

1: It always starts with wanting one.
2: Once you have one you need another to match it.
3: Then you need to have at least one each pistol, rifle, and shotgun.
4: There is always room for more.

You can never have to many guns! Also they retain most of their value if properly maintained and cared for. My dad has a 6.5mm swedish sniper rifle that was made in 1903. He uses it every year for deer hunting. You would never guess its that old either, still looks new.

I just shot my Mossberg 590 12 gauge...my shoulder is all bruised that thing kicks like a mule. It is not very fun to shoot since it hurts to shoot it. I held it as tight as I could to my shoulder and it still kicked bad.

Look into a Knoxx stock. I have one on my 870 and it's awesome. Slugs, buckshot and birdshot all feel the same, and they're very, very controllable. I can rapid-fire magnum slugs without issues. They have both pistol grip and regular stock styles and they make shooting a shotgun a lot more fun. I spent 100.00 for my SpecOps stock and it's the best thing I ever did for that shotgun. I've had first time shooters fire it and enjoy shooting it, and it's been a hit with the Police officers I've been shooting with as well.

^ over priced. you can make you own (in Nathan's shop probably) for way less.

Also you should see if you can get a .40 barrel for that .357 sig. should be same magazine but cheaper ammo, and not as pansy as 9mm ;-)

Hey now, not all of us can afford to shoot .40 for practice...

Got some rounds coming my way from Cabela's. With 19 rounds in the clip, and 1 in the hole.... 9mm or what have you.... your not gonna be standing anymore.

If you think .40 is bad, try .357SIG. 25.00 bucks a box for practice ammo (and 35.00 for a box of good defensive ammo) really hurts. That's why I'm getting the 9mm conversion.

Let me put it this way.

Hornady ammo for my .450 Bushmaster is around 30ish for a box of 20 rounds.

Gold Dots for my .357SIG are 35-37ish for 20 rounds.

I'm debating about purchasing a stripped AR lower "just in case". Whats all involved in the purchase in MN, what do I need? I've read that there could be a tax, is this in some states, all states, or did I misunderstand. Anything else I need to know would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Mod, would it be possible to change the title of this thread to "the official firearms thread" or something.

^ depending on the lower you will most likely need a permit to purchase. besides that it should be just like you were buying any other gun. mainly a federal "instant" background check and thats about it. I do not think there are any extra taxes, you will probably save money on taxes as the taxable amount on a lower is much smaller than a whole AR rifle. I think there is a higher percent tax on guns, but it cant be too much higher.

    *edit

I talked to Bill gs and cleared some things up. The guy basically laughed at me about the tax thing so maybe I dreamed that up, or it could be on a state by state basis, who knows. One needs a P2P and you're right, they still do an on the spot background check. They acutally have them in stock but are $220, ouch. Fwiw their transfer fee is $50.

Does anyone know, do all the parts have to go through a FFL or only the lower because it's serialized?

^ only the serialized part. So far an AR it is only the lower. Which is why everyone is buying up lower receivers like mad right now. this is why they are so expensive. say 2 years ago one could find a DPMS (good quality) stripped lower for around $125 or so. Now at Bill's they are going for $220. This just shows the price inflation that is out there on these parts due to the current economic/politic climate.

If you look online you can find lowers for really good prices, you just need to have the shipped to an FFL to do the paperwork on them. $50 is a bit much for a FFL transfer, IIRC The Gunstop in excelsior does them for $30ish (might need to call them to verify). otherwise just start asking around at gun stores to see who has the best rate and see if they are ok with having stuff shipped to them. The last time I had one done (over the summer) it was $15.

if you dont have your p2p and want to get a lower still, look into the AR-10 lowers. For most of those you should be able to buy it without needing a P2P since they dont use curved magazines. so basically.... AR-15 in .223 requires a P2P while a AR-10 in .308 does not.

I may have been looking into this sort of thing a bit over the last few weeks or so ;)

I already have the P2P so that's not a problem.

Essential arms, which I've read pretty good reviews of, offers the stripped lower for $110. Not too bad.
