I would like to know more about this whole tax stamp thing. I have heard of it befored but have never found out A.) exactly what it allows you to do, and B.) how to get one.

    Here's the basics.

There are certain modifications that you can and can't do. For the most part, auto-fire is illegal, even with a trigger activator, in the state of MN (That's Minnesota, for those that don't know)
Any weapon with a shoulder stock on it will require a tax stamp if the barrel is shorter than 18". I think this also is true for a gun that is under 26 inches with a shoulder stock. If you get a shorter barrel, you must apply for the SBR tax stamp. The forms that you need are beyond my knowledge, but I'm sure any city hall/police office should know.
If you remove the stock from a shoulder fired rifle, it becomes a pistol. There are certain types of grip that are and are not allowed. What those are I'm not sure. Eitherway, if you remove the stock from a rifle to be used as a pistol I believe it requires a tax stamp, at least with shotguns it becomes an AOW.
If you add a stock to a pistol, it becomes a shortbarrel rifle(SBR) and requires a tax stamp as such.
If you remove the stock from a rifle and add a vertical foregrip, it requires a tax stamp, if you keep the stock and add a foregrip it does not require a tax stamp. As far as I know.
From what I know, the tax stamp is 200 bucks.
Of course all of this should be verified by your local law enforcement or go to a gun shop like Bill's and ask them, they are required to know the firearms laws. That would be your best bet, is just to ask the guys at Bill's what is allowed and not allowed, and what the legal hoops are you have to jump through to do what you want to do.

Short barreled rifle is anything less than 16", short barreled shotgun is anything less than 18".

Are you looking to put together your own SBR or buy one complete? It's a different form for each, but they will both require the $200 tax stamp.

I'll probably just get the upper since I've got a .223 compatible lower. I may just do the complete rifle depending on how the next few months go.

That means that you will be turning your existing lower into a registered short barreled rifle lower, and that you need to fill out a form 1. In essense, you are "manufacturing" a short barreled rifle. It will be a class III device unless you get it un-registered.

Are you going to try for LEO signoff, trust, or LLC? I went the trust route. I used Quicken Willmaker to create a revocable living trust, and listed the lower on the property schedule. This is one way of getting around the LEO signoff, the LLC is the other (although you need to pay to upkeep the LLC or something...I didn't investigate that very thoroughly). After you get your trust notarized/LEO signoff/LLC complete, you need to send your lower off to get engraved (remember, you are manufacturing a short barreled rifle). My engraving has the name of my trust as well as the city and state in which I was living when I filled out the paperwork. I'm assuming you need your name if you are going with LEO signoff, and the name of your LLC if you are going that route. I used Orion Arms in Lino Lakes.

After you get the engraved lower back, fill out your Form 1 and include a copy of your certification of trust. Wait until your paperwork is back, and then you can order your upper. Expect the whole process to take 2-3 months.

Look here for a more detailed explanation: http://www.arizonagunlist.com/How_t...able_living_trust_without_a_CLEO_signoff.html

So is the process easier if I'm just going with a complete rifle then?

Nope, it's the same process but you fill out a form 4 rather than a form 1 (you are transferring the SBR rather than manufacturing it). It's really not as bad as it sounds, the worst part is the wait for the ATF to send the paperwork back. You've got all that time to pick out your upper.

Very nice taste. I love my USP Tactical. I've been shooting it for 7-8 years now and it is very reliable and controllable for a .45. (Limp wristed shooters will get it to stovepipe though.) also the followers in the mags will sometimes pop out 1/2 way on dropped mag-changes. That sounds worse than it is though. The tactical shoots very well. It has the same trigger as the Mark 2:yumyum:

found some PMC 223 ammo at BP Fleet Farm this afternoon 8.99/20 which seems like a pretty good price considering the current ammo "problem" they had about 1k left at 3 pm.

Both, sort-of. It has been in my family since the fifties. It sat up at a cabin closet most of those years, unlocked, with ammo,... I finally convinced them it would be a good idea to secure it (lots of kids around). I offered to buy them a lock, to which they responded "We dont need anymore, do you want it?" :)

Any idea what it is worth?

It has been kept oiled and is in excellent working order. I'm excited to shoot it someday soon, to discover if I'm one of those who love the 1911 or if I'll sell it and get something different.

I would have that inspected by a competent gunsmith before you shoot it for safetys sake. I'll take a hit and offer $20 dollars. It's probably not worth much more than that.

    ;)

I keed, I keed. From the markings, that was a GI pistol which is going to add some value. Depending on the condition, it could be worth several hundred dollars or more. I'd be careful shooting that as those hammers can draw blood and I hear that it hurts like a mother. If you'd like to try shooting a newer, more modern 1911 you're more than welcome to try my Kimber TLE II next time we head to the range.

You can usually find them at Cabelas in the gun library as well, I seem to see a few of them every time I stop in. There are a lot of them floating around. Like I said, I'd be real careful about putting rounds through one before getting it inspected. I did hear a good story of a guy who broke into a WWII vets home and stole the .45 he'd carried on Iwo Jima. He went to rob a convenience store and pulled the trigger to shoot the clerk. The ammo was old enough that it hangfired long enough for him to look down the barrel to see why the round hadn't gone off yet.

He was removed from the gene pool a few thousandths of a second later. The officers even gave the gun back to the vet.

Cabelas and gander have old 1911's from time to time for a decent deal. Check online too there are regulations on how to get them but you can find some good deals from time to time.

I too have this itch. The 500s are pretty reasonably priced at Bills, well at least the mix got a good deal on his. I am trying to decide if I want a scope for the M1A or a 12GA. tough choice....

I might be in for one depending on when it was and if I can find any reasonably priced ammo around town. the prices on some of this stuff is still going up! I have seen $1/shot for .308Win. Thats over double what it was last year.

Easy choice. Get the 12 gauge, M1a's have the best iron sights made. Shot mine close to MOA w/ irons.

I do like the sights on the M1A, but I can use both :) . I have NM sights and I can shoot close to 1 MOA with them at 100yrds. i have a feeling that anything beyond 100 is going to deteriorate due to my eye sight. So a nice 3-10x40 would make things much easier on me. I am also very excited to see how good the groupings can be when I am not the limiting factor.

My AR will stay with the irons, they work perfect for what I want. I tried a Holosight on it and wasnt super impressed.

If they could put the safety on a Mossberg onto an 870 they'd have the perfect shotgun.

I recommend getting a 12ga pump as well. They're the most versatile gun out there, you can't really go wrong with one. Get the 500 or an 870 and throw a Knoxx stock on there. You can shoot it all day long and still be smiling at the end of the day.

Or do like I did, remove one screw from the stock on the 500 tactical, and you have a pistol grip shotgun. Then you go out in a field and grin from ear to ear with your 'boomstick.'

Got the M14 into a proper birch stock, NM flash suppressor w/lug. Waiting on me to get off my ass and fit the TRW bolt and op-rod and get re-parked.

Picked up a little pistol for a song, and love to shoot it. Still need to work in the barrel, but 8" groups at 25yrds is mighty nice for a $400 pistol :D

And my new money pit. But it does quite nice with open sights at 50yrds for a $119 rifle.

I had an EOTech on my AR10 and liked it, then my 10-22 wore it, and then I eventually sold it. ACOG>EOTech=Aimpoint IMO. EOTech has faster sight aquisition and the Aimpoint has better battery life. It all comes down to person preference.

For some reason the zoom just bothers me when trying to do fast close up acquisitions. It is probably because I dont do it much. I just know what to expect when I pull up the irons.

I you shoot a lot, you can shoot an ACOG with both eyes open and you can do okay close up, but it takes a lot of practice.

For me, the Aimpoint preference came about because of the drastically simpler reticle.

I was in one of the first units to field the M68 (Aimpoint ML2ish) and it came with much resistance. After proper introductions were made I watched people who had trouble at 150m and out drop the 400m on every shot. Reactive fire scores jumped drastically, mostly on those that didn't have a very accurate natrual point of aim.

I had an EOtech on my M4 for about 3 days in Iraq when we first got them for testing. Some people liked them, but I wasn't a fan of the cross-hair reticle. The M68 had adjustable dot size (using the intensity knob) which allowed for more percision at 200m+.

The ACOG was mounted up when I took over a team in the PSD squad and did spotting for one of the DM's. Up close fire was still mostly reactive and natrual POA, but there were little iron sights up top. After a couple weeks of using it, I could fire through it with both eyes open. This is in the design, and the designers at Trijicon know what they are doing. The only time I took it off for the M68 was in situations where there was little need for anything beyond 300m and my shotgun didn't fill the mission either.

As for the M14/M21.... I prefer the Leupold MKIII, but I like my kidney and don't want to sell it for optics. I have, however, found very good results with the Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 "Target" mil-dot. Optics are wonderfully clear, diopter is on the money at 100+, and you can't beat the dots IF you know how to use them. My M14 will wear standard irons till my eyes get too bad... then maybe I will look into optics.

For now my Aimpiont ML2 sits atop my Marlin 336 in 30-30. Looks REAL funny with a modern reflex sight on a classic design lever gun.... but what gets the quick hits on target is all that matters for putting meat in the freezer.

For the money the Super Sniper 10x42. Badass scope and rugged. Read a post on THR about a guy who ran over his gun w/ a SS on it with his truck and it did nothing to it. Super clear glass, and super rugged.

This is kind of my conundrum. My M1A has already broken one scope, and I know it will break more unless I drop some $$$$ on one. From what I have read from knowledgeable sources on m14tfl, the M1A/M14 has a different recoil (more muzzle loader esque)effect than standard semi-autos. This recoil effect can wreak havoc on scopes. The scopes where the focus (objective adjustment?) is located on the eye piece (behind everything) tend to hold up better to the M1As recoil. I am sure that there is some truth and some hot air in this. But my guess is on lower quality optics this could make a difference, where higher quality optics just hold up to it better. I am now int he position of do I spend say $200 on a decent scope and hope it doesnt break, or just fork it over for a nice Leo or equivalent to save money from not burning through 10 cheaper scopes... Arg...

I got kicked off THR after one post. ::)

I see your issue, and knowing my optics are no longer purchased by uncle sam, I do a bit more reading before I buy things. I have had seriously good luck with the Bushnell I mentioned earlier after about 500rds out of my single-shot 7mm-08 which kicks like a mule. I first heard about it on some random forum, and did some reading. Turns out it is the factory scope that is sold on most Barrett .50's and they hold zero for hundreds of rounds.... which says a ton.

Nice looking 500, the standoff device is a nice touch ;)

I was this close [ ] to buying a new Sig 226 Navy on Saturday. I will own one by Christmas. I need a 9mm for my collection and that would fit the bill wonderfully.
