Thanks Brian, yeah that barrel should be a great last ditch weapon should it come down to it(I hope I'm never that deep in trouble though);) my "collection" is slowly growing but I'm pretty darn happy having the basics pretty well covered. Once again I'm looking to spend a few hours at the range any day now if someone else is feeing the same way.

I got my TLE II at Bills for a nice price. When I bought mine they had a used Custom II for 675. I'm sure they can order one up for you though. Otherwise, you can also check Striechers, they're a Kimber dealer as well.

No offense to Brian, but have you looked at 1911's other than Kimbers?

    None taken ;)

I'm not tied to Kimbers, I just happened to get a great deal on one of the last internal extractor TLE II models and I found a screaming deal on a used Rimfire Target. I love the Springfield Armory TRP, and I want to own a Wilson Combat eventually. Ed Brown and Nighthawk also make some great ones, as does Les Baer. Still, my TLE II has been flawless for me, the only failures I've had with it were ammo related rather than the gun.

benny or brian, correct me if I'm wrong, but we consider barrels with the serrated compensator a breaching barrel.

Never heard of it as a standoff...

Did I mention on here I picked up a Beretta Cougar .45 ACP? I forget things.

Are you kidding? I bought mine as the PRIMARY home defense should it come down to it. And "coming down to it" is defined as "I hear you in my home, allow me to puncture the drywall in a couple spots to better inform you of the business I am offering, don't worry, it takes all of 5 minutes to patch those holes. Your chest and face however will be a bit more of a chore. Do you remember how you came into the house, because you should be heading for it single file at this point. And please do not leave any feces or urine on my floor, I don't care that you lost control of those functions briefly. It is YOUR responsibility to clean it up. At gunpoint."

I've also been practicing my home defense shooting at the range. Went with Shibbs and Shorten last weekend and screamed "PUT DOWN THAT ****ING TELEVISION" and "YOUR TRAMPLING MY WELL MANICURED LAWN" and "THAT IS MY GOOD CHINA" before each shot.

^^^I'm with you 100% the firearm as a whole was purchased as a primary home defense tool. Brian mentioned the "standoff barrel" so I was commenting on the pointy end of the barrel being a weapon itself should I somehow run out of ammo or other guns;)

They're the same thing. The "standoff" refers to it being a device that keeps the barrel spaced from the door lock/hinge that you're going to be breaching. I'm going to be getting a Vang Comp mag extension that will keep my capacity the same, but adds a standoff device to the mag tube rather than the barrel. And yes, for close quarters fighting it's almost as good as a bayonet. One good poke and you're going to draw blood at the very least.

You'll have to post pics of your Beretta!

Boba, I hope you don't have any neighbors close by. ;)

Personally, I don't bother with the warning sounds. I'd rather not give away my position or the fact that I'm about to send a surprise downrange.

My beretta is in my Uncle's Safe, AKA the armory while I'm gone. I cant afford to bring it to Cali with their gun laws, bringing it onto base would place it in the armory and there is just too much hassle even trying to draw it from them on off days. I love it though. I have 3 mags, one factory, and two aftermarket extended's that push the capacity up to 11+1, which is more .45ACP than I plan on ever needing. If it isn't, I'll reload.

My thoughts on using a serrated compensator is that its odd. A breaching round is chalk, so the idea of it standing off for a mechanical breach seems really counter productive. I was always told its for jamming into a wooden doorway, etc...but when a hinge breach requires 3-6 rounds, and a lock 2-3 rounds, there is no way I would use my time to anchor the muzzle, especially with a flipped shotgun. I can imagine it would be uncomfortable to get prodded with a muzzle, but I would never put my barrel within a combatants reach. A buttstroke or smash turns a lot to mush and makes your weapon nearly impossible to obtain control of-so does adding distance and adding a few rounds to the plug if you have the opportunity. Im not disagreeing on its intended function, I just think its really odd.

PS, the best home defense weapon is a cheap pump shotgun with a BRIGHT surefire secured/taped on. You can put rounds in it, or dont, whatever suits your fancy. Nothing is more universal for get the **** out of my house, than the noise a racking shotgun makes. Tell me you know one person over the age of 5 who doesnt know what noise a pump makes. A bright flashlight in the eyes will give away your position, but its far more effective to see your target than it is to be Ricky reconing around behind the couch. It will blind your target, and cause them to raise their sights for the first several rounds at least, if they have a weapon. If its aligned correctly, the brightest point of the beam on a tac light is also a good pattern indicator if you're using something like #2 buck. There is no reason that in the 1-5 seconds they are blinded you cannot make an incapacitating shot with a 20 or 12ga, unless you forgot to wear your glasses. In that case, fine, bust out the $2000 AR15 or AK with the red dot scope, laser, bipod, cold bored barrel, 6 mags and collapsible buttstock. Just don'tt forget to pray that none of the rounds end up in the bedroom of the kids two blocks away.

The first thing to do is ditch that stock mag ASAP. Get yourself 4 or 5 Wilson Combat #47D 8 rounders. You'll thank me when your gun feeds every time. What time are you thinking about going on Sunday? I might be able to make a late afternoon session.

The conversion kits are well worth the money. I was going to get one for my TLE II and I ended up finding a used Kimber Rimfire Target for not much more so I decided to go with that. It's a fun gun that's paid for itself many, many times over throughout the years.

If I can make it I'd rather do Robbinsdale, I'll let you know tomorrow if it'll work or not.

Have you fieldstripped it yet and put some decent lube on? If you haven't, I highly recommend doing that before you take it out.

^^^Sorry I had plans in the afternoon. How bout this saturday 8/22? Circle Pines is still best for me(or other rifle owners) but I can do Robbinsdale if thats what works for others. After seeing my wife handle Brians 870 with no problem I ordered up a knoxx stock and should have it put on the mossberg anyday now.

    P22 thoughts

I'm thinking of a P22 as a cheap-ammo trainer/plinker. Seem like lots of people don't like them, so I'm glad to hear from a couple of owners who like them.

I know a Ruger MK III or Brownig Buckmark are better guns, but the P22 is much more similar to my Kel Tek P3AT conceal gun.

Oh yah, one more thing, I'm a lefty, which is a nother big plus for the P22 (truely ambidextrous).

Other comments on P22 vs. MK III or Buckmark?

How about best barrel and sight choice for Buckmark/MK III?

I have shot a P22 and it was very innaccurate, and the grip was too small and I don't have big hands. The MKIII on the other hand is very comfortable and will shoot circles around the P22. It is a freaking tack driver. It wouldn't even be a question if I was making this decision.... Unless of course a CZ Kadet was thrown into the mix.

I have wanted a P22 for along time, but everytime I think about getting one I am discouraged. I have heard many bad reviews and lots of stories about returns. It is a neat little gun but it is very small, my hands arnt very big and I need the extended magazine (extra grip space) to even have a chance of holding it properly. I have kind of given up hope on it and have now turned toward the Browning Buckmark. My dad owned a Ruger MK I, which is very similar to the current MK III and he said it was a good gun but near impossible to disassemble for maintenance. He now has a buck mark (which is great) and is slightly easier to take down than the Ruger but still not a breeze.

    I like this one :)

Me likey a lot. Nice find!

As far as plinkers go, keep a look out for a used Kimber Rimfire model. I found one for 425.00 a couple of years ago and it's been a great gun. Full sized 1911 chambered in .22LR FTW. Eli has a Ruger 22/45 that was a lot of fun as well. Ruger makes a fun gun to shoot, but they're hell to field strip from what I've found. My 10/22 is a bitch to put back together. I've heard great things about the Buckmark as well. I've put a couple thousand rounds downrange through a P22, it was fun but not something I'd spend the money on.

Take a good look at a Sig Mosquito. It's a 90% scale P226, and those are one of the best pistols I've ever gotten my hands around. You really can't go wrong with one at all.
