I spend a lot of time on the firing line and the high road and I can tell you 98% of the reviews and stories of Mosquitos I have read about have been negative. Supposedly they have horrible reliability problems and are extremely picky on ammo.

If you're looking for a nice normal looking .22 pistol get a CZ Kadet. They are rock solid reliable and you can switch out uppers for the 9mm 75b as they're on the same steel frame. They're very accurate and extremely reliable.

Otherwise I would recommend a MKIII, Buckmark, or Neos. They will all be reliable, have had many, many positive reviews and will all be very accurate. I would go with the MKIII myself since I have had the most hands on experience with it and I have never had or seen a failure of any kind with one. They are also tack drivers, its amazing how accurate they are.

From what I've read, many of the problems with them have been ironed out in the later models, and were mostly due to people not matching up the recoil springs to the ammo they were using. If I were choosing between it or a P22, I'd get the Sig every time. Part of that is because I already carry a Sig and prefer the platform, but I've also had trigger time on a range Mosquito and didn't have any issues over the course of a few hundred rounds.

I did forget about the Neos though. That'd be another great option to check out.

I don't like having to match ammo to guns, I like picking guns that aren't ammo picky. Generally a gun that is ammo picky is going to be less reliable even with good ammo than one that can run on any ammo. But that's just me, I hate failures. Even 1 fte will piss me off at the range, thankfully I don't own any guns that give me trouble, but if I did they would probably be out of my stable quickly. My AR10 had 1 fte and was put on Gunbroker a month later, but I sold it for the money not because of the failure lol, $500 profit.

I've got a Ruger 45/22 MKI. Yes, its a pain to field strip. Not only getting the right piece in the right place at the right time, gravity also plays a big part in assembly of it. Has to be pointed up @ 45 degrees, pull triger, then slide part x into part ky. Ugh.

Besides that, and once you get the hang of it, its not bad at all.

Its a GREAT shooting gun tho. I wanna pick up a better/mark barrel and scope it. ;)

I'm with you to a point on that one, however I don't put my plinking guns into the same category as the ones that go with me on a daily basis. I'm willing to tolerate the occasional malfunction on a .22, as some of them are ammo related vs gun related. Also, the practice in clearing a jam is great for when the fit does hit the shan in the real world. I won't tolerate malfunctions on my carry guns, and so far my Sig Sauer and my Kimber have been flawless.

I've had no problems with my P22,but when it comes to a carry weapon I'll stay with my sig 229R or Glock 23C.

    Neos it is

Funny story: So I went to the range last night to try to hate the P22. Rented P22 and a beautiful MK III stainless hunter long barrel. Ironically, after 400 rds., the MK III FTE or FTL at least once per mag and the P22 was almost perfect. BTW, we asked for a different MK III in the case and they said "they all do it, it's probably a bit dirty, the other one will be the same". This was a good lesson that even a good gun is crap when dirty. Which lead me to doubt if I wanted a MK 111, since they are a PITA strip. Also intersting was that the Truglo front sight on the Ruger was invisible in the dark range whereas the simple white paint on the P22 was great. And the Ruger mag got painful to load after a while wheras the P22 was easy one the fingers.

I loved shooting P22 (fit me fine), but it was not nealy as accurate as the Ruger, and I was still nervous about all the bad press it generates. CZ Kadet is more $$$ than I want to spend on a .22. So I was getting quite convinced I needed the Buck Mark. Then...

So as I prepare to leave the store, an employee brings out a fresh trade to the used cabnet as we walk buy. A stainless Neos with only 100 rds through it for $175. Hmmm, quality accurate pistol with some amidextrous features, easy to strip, optics rail built-in, perect fit, all for about half the price of the Buck Mark I want (Camper URX stainless), and you never see used Buck Marks for sale. Sold! Problem solved. Excpet now I have to go back to the range to shoot my new gun. ;)

One last fun observation, after 400-500 .22 pistol rounds, pulled out my .380 and wow, I'm already much better with it (tighter groups due to better trigger mechanics). It's going to be awesome to have the .22 for cheap practice!

    Thanks guys/gals for you feedback.

I picked up an HK P30 for CC a couple months ago. The gun is a dream to shoot.

My P22 is a fun and cheap gun to plink with.

I think I will head out there sometime. Friday afternoon might work out well for me. I am in the market for something in the 12ga tactical category. If they have something in a 500 or 870 I like that is on sale I might have to come home with it.

It arrived the day I left for Montana (Doh). I have been running all over trying to find rings for it, but I was able to get a good set today at Cabelas. So here are the pics.

Yea... I'm not really sure what the purpose of that thing is... I like the fact that it has the light rail on the bottom of it... I want to put something fancy on it, make it look mean.

To each their own. It adds length to the overall weapon. Without that thing it's about 5" shorter. They make a pump grip that has 3 rails on it for flashlights and foregrips and such. It was pretty inexpensive too IIRC.

Agreed, and don't you already own an MP5 replica .22LR? What's the point of buying a bunch of tactical looking guns that shoot 22? I'd save a couple hundred more and get an actual .223 version of it. 22LR is fun to shoot for a while. Hell, you can purchase an AR15 in store usually same-day can't you as it is a long rifle? It isn't like you need to go through hoops to purchase one.

Negative. I believe you need a permit to purchase to acquire a AR15. It is an exception to the rule. However there are ways around it, such as if you buy an AR15 chambered in .308 you will most likely be able to buy same day (has to do w/ magazine capacity and other things)

I sold my GSG-5 to getthe Colt .22 M4. I like this gun much better then the GSG-5. I got $10 less for the GSG-5 then I paid for it, so I didn't take that big of a cut. For the price I got this for, it was one of those things I just had to buy.

Someday I will buy a .223 AR rifle. I wish I did 3 years ago when I first started looking at them. Nothing is holding me back on buying one at the moment, I would rather spend my extra cash on a other things at the moment.

.22LR rimfire is cheap.. but .223 isnt going to break the bank either, unless you're buying rounds with your penny jar.

I cant even see buying something like that as a youth rifle. Any kid can handle a standard AR platform chambered in .223

I'd rather just get a plain jane Ruger 10/22 and an Archangel kit if you want the ergonomics. However, that would be a fun platform to shoot with. If you like it, that's what really matters.

Jack, when are you going to be sending me that M249 piece by piece? ;)

haha, even TALKING about that is enough to get me into some serious ****. I would love to be able to keep one after I get out...as long as someone else bought me the ammo and would clean the copper off of the gas regulators for me xD

I really wish they would do family days out here like they do at Pendleton and other bases. I've long been trying to find a way to get my dad into the saddle out here so he can fire an M2, 240, and a SAW.

Thanks Brian - now my family will be receiving mail that looks like edward scissor hands inspected it at the post office! jk jk

I'd like to see someone even ship the barrel of an M2. Those things are ****ing pigs, even without the 3pod. That an the barrel itself nearly costs more than a SAW. Sure you guys don't want MK19 parts? for petes sake! haha

I agree on the 240's H23. Especially the new Bravos and Golfs we just got in. I feel for ANY 240 gunner, those things are a bitch to hump anywhere. As a DM I spent a lot of time passing those guys on the dash to our over watch positions.

Regardless, there nothing like a few Marines with talking 240's to establish who brought the balls to a firefight.
