Mmm yes... this is why we chose my brothers $500 91 Mk2 for our first car. http://oksubaru.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=7744 After finishing your cage its finally got us motivated again to get back to work on it. Fabbed up our super adjustment seatrails yesterday. This will allow my 6'8" self to drive the car aswell as someone... normal height... Though they will be sitting in a cavern of steel haha Glad to hear everyone likes the cage, contact me or Carl if anyone else is interested in one :yumyum:
hoodpins installed heatercore installed new brakelines partially run handbrake and proportioning valve wiring back in the car?! (well a beginning at least) a huge thanks to joel and emily for coming over and helping today! joels a real pro at the double flare now
lol I think 20 mins was wasted finding the 12mm lol. all in all good night..tell your parents thanks for dinner again!
I have 1/2 in split loom if you want some. I am talking 200+feet (maybe closer to 400ft). It was from the last car I rewired. Russ
except we have the inlet and outlet mixed up on it lol (sorry joel ). russ, I'll let you know on the loom - most of the wiring is back in the car and I have enough protection for the areas I need but if I need more I'll be sure to holler
Just curious, can a hydraulic handbrake still lock like an OEM cable handbrake? I've thought about throwing the factory unit away if a hydraulic unit can perform the same functions.
Some do, however we were warned against it as you run the risk of the brake bleeding down over time and your car rolling away. Not a problem if you only want it to be legal, i suppose, but there aren't inspections in MN anyway.
I looked into putting a hydraulic parking brake in my 4runner, and I feel if your whole system is all in working order, and you buy a quality unit, there's no reason it should slowly bleed off at all. The only concern is that you wont have any form or emergency brake if the hydraulic system fails...but that's what engine braking is for.
this. the whole purpose for the separate mechanical handbrake setup, is in case of hydraulic failure. parking and drifting are convenient side-effects. I don't really see the point of a hydraulic handbrake on anything but a rally or drift car (or a toyota truck, where the cable seems to break in multiple places just from looking at it  ). I have been looking a bit into it for my car, so I could upgrade rear calipers (which would mean I'd loose the mechanical ebrake part, which is integrated into the caliper), and have heard people say they can loose pressure.....but I asked justin about it not long after he got his car going, and he said he hadn't had problems...of course, he doesn't park on the hills of Duluth every day.
The issue with using a hydraulic lock as a parking brake is that while the brake system is designed to hold extreme pressure, it's designed to do so during normal braking, which is to say, for fairly short periods of time. If you lock that pressure to the calipers, it's going to cause extra wear on any seals or flexible hoses in the system. A hydraulic lock would seem like a nice thing to have to hold the car in place temporarily, like while you go pee in the woods before the start of a stage, but want to keep the engine idling. But not for long-term parking. Chocking the wheels would be a lot more reliable for that
The idea is to keep from having to move your hands very far. I'm not sure I'd have mounted it there myself, but of course, if it really sucks, carl can move it. Carl, is that brake set up for pushing or pulling? Looks like pulling, and I always seem to see the WRC guys using theirs with a push. Not sure why though...
My guess: I always notice sequential gearboxes going up on a pull and down on a push - i'd assume this is so the acceleration pushes your hand in the direction you want it to go, rather than away from it. IE, accelerating hard your hand is being pulled back towards you, so while accelerating (shifting up) it's easier to pull towards you. Probably not a big deal, but a bit better is still better.
everyone says the brake looks like it's in the way. feel free to sit in the car and then say that again (if you fit in the car - if you don't, everything is in the way lol) - the seat really guides your legs straight to the pedals, it's very difficult to move them out and actually contact the brake - i physically can't without slightly lifting myself out of the seat. it's set-up to pull as it feels more natural than pushing
On a slightly related note, apparently BMW finally got it right on the new M3. Pull towards you to upshift. Felt counter-intuitive every time I've been in a car where you push away to upshift.
I was there at Carl's place when he was mocking up the handbrake and we have already gone over that subject. There really is only so many places you can install this thing. Also consider the fact that when your racing, you can plan on not moving for a while as you'll be strapped down super tight and the place where Carl has her mounted feels very natural. I only hope I can be as lucky when I get to install mine. ;-)
Or the owner/driver loses his brain cells in the process of building his car. LOL Don't forget to vent!!! LOL No the other vent!
omg, it must be getting close! it's covered in teh stickas! a huge thanks to dave at gearhead graphics for cutting and applying all the vinyl and rockblocker on this car - if anyone needs any sort of graphics or vinyl work I 100% recommend going to gearhead graphics!!
I hear the more zip ties you have on a stage rally car that faster it is.....Those Subaru clips are heavy!:eek3:..... Congrats carl, and thanks for letting me play with you on the build!!!
This is not a rumor. it's a fact. if someone made a zip tie big enough to hold the strut to the hub, every rally team on the planet would carry them.
it's a start - I'm happy to have grimmspeed and gearhead graphics on board. motorsports seats is kind of an unofficial sponsor - he just gives me really good deals on stuff. but for the most part, i'm my own sponsor lol
Well, maybe with the seigler photography stickers you could take the car as a tax deduction - advertisement and suchlike.
redid the lightbar to hold 2 700ff's and 2 4000's excuse the ugly welds - none of us have all that much welding experience. it is extremely strong (you can jump up and down on it and the bar does not move - instead the whole car moves) I also installed 2 map lights unfortunately none of the wiring is connected on anything right now - i need to run to the store to get some supplies. probably early next week fire extinguisher mounted
I believe that R-A is starting to frown upon extinguishers mounted there. Not sure of the details but i know at least one competitor at a national rally has been forced to relocate them before tech would pass them. I think there was somehting posted by Mike Hurst about it, I'll try to find it.
mark, i think i found what you are talking about and it looks like the concern is having it mounted that way on the driver's side. this is on the passenger side
