I have been having issues with the transmission on my 2011 WRX, first off I have been getting a metal on metal grinding noise during deceleration in second gear around 2K rpm's also I am experiencing a rattling sound when slipping into first or reverse at first I was told it was the heat shield rattling then I was told the noise was coming from the transmission, all of this after they replaced almost every bearing in the transmission due to the fact that everything was overtight in the transmission from the factory and it fried the bearings. Today they called and told me the decel grind and the rattle coming from the transmission is completely normal and the noise is being exacerbated due to kartboy shifter bushings I put in the car. I am having a hard time believing this but they are now trying to convince me to pay them to swap the stock bushings back in. My main question is under any circumstances could the bushings actually be causing the rattle or the decel grind to actually occur? My concern is that I've already been told once by Morries that the transmission was defective straight from the factory. I would feel pretty stupid paying them to swap back my stock bushings and not having the issue resolved. Any help is appreciated.
My car has gotten louder with every transmission related mod. It is a recently rebuilt 02 5mt. It has a Group N Trans mount, a lightened flywheel and the same Kartboy Shifter. It sounds like absolute ass on decel but it has not gotten louder in the year plus of operation and keeps going strong. You are probably just hearing the guts of the transmission. that being said, I have not heard your car. It is probably something you will have to live with.
It's a very distinct rattle that causes everyone in the parking lot to turn their head, it really does sound just like the heat shield is rattling, my only concern is that I drove the car for about 6 months with those bushings in with no issues at all so it wasn't an immediate change, seeing how the car is under bumper to bumper warranty I am having a hard time believing I just have to live with it.
Subaru transmissions sound like **** if you do anything not stock. Firmer bushings transmit the transmissions operating sounds into your cabin through your shifter rod. You will hear more noise now. The heat-shieldesque rattle could be something else, however. Have you crawled under there to have a peek?
I haven't myself crawled under there and to be honest I'm not mechanically inclined enough to be able to tell what the issue is, but Morrie Brooklyn park has had the car in the air for the past two days, they have admittedly told me they have no idea what the sound is only that it is coming from the transmission, which is why I think they are just going to blame it on the shifter bushings because they are out of ideas, they also claimed a subaru rep drove the car today and is telling them the rattle is completely normal. I probably just need a second opinion at this point as the warranty is up in about 3K miles and I really want to get to the bottom of this before that is up. I just feel like if they are going to blame the bushings then it should have been something I noticed right after installing them, not 6 months later.
