    So my girlfriends dad does powder coating for a living and can cut me a pretty good deal. I was thinking of getting my rims coated flat black. Anyone got an opinion on how they think it would look? I'm also gonna be plastic dipping the silver strip on the grill flat black and getting grillcraft girls upper and lower. But before I do anything I want an honest opinion. 2010 wrx pearl white if that helps. Thanks

    It could look good. I am a fan of flat colors. You could spend the $16 and PlastiDip the wheels to check out a general idea of what it would look like.

    Use a little bit of clear or some satin/matte clear. Cleaning completely flat black is a monumental pain in the ass. It also scuffs pretty easily. The ones posted above are semi-gloss. Very different from "flat."

    The ones posted above have a matte clear, like you're suggesting

    I would assume anyone painting anything would use a clear. I posted examples of a matte clear, because flat shows imperfections and using a matte clear with a very low gloss will hide imperfections and contaminants, which are bound to happen outside of a controlled paint booth.

    flat ---> matte ---> satin ---> semi-gloss ---> gloss

    Yet you said flat. As did the op. If you tell a powder coater or painter to give you flat, they'll probably give you flat. Don't get flat. That is all.

    LOL. I can be quite pedantic sometimes, so I appreciate your specificity Sheen.

    However, let me just say, that colloquially, "flat" is often meant to be anything other than gloss.

    And, yes, true "flat" is not durable, nor possible to keep clean.

    And you said semi-gloss.

    I was simply clarifying what in fact it was. It certainly is flat, like I stated. Flat with a matte clear.

    Fact is, like Sheen stated, is that flat black is a PITA to clean and does not hold up well. With a matte clear, you can achieve a near flat look with protection and ease of cleaning and durability.

    The OP asked for opinions. This is mine.

    This is what i'm going for. I talked to him and there doing a bunch of black next week and is gonna give me some samples. He himself said flat is a no no and so did his wife who knows nothing about it. So i'm gonna stay safe and not go flat flat. i just sent my girlfriend this pic as an example if thats cool.

    I got my Rota SDR's done in Matte Black powdercoating. It was a 10% clear -90% black mix ratio. Mark at New Image Coatings said that he mixed the clear and black to that specification. They are quite easy to clean btw. But they are not "flat-flat", lol. It will look great on the white tho no doubt!

    And you don't have to spray any kind of clear coat on powdercoating you dumbasses! lol
