Its been a while since i have been to the site, but i love the new look! I have some concerns about my 2004 STi. Yesterday after a game of disc golf i hoped into my car to leave, everything was fine drove bout a mile down the dirt road (and i wasnt beating on my baby) till i hit HWY 65, turned north on the hwy and drove about another mile or two till i hit a stoplight. While i was wating for the light to turn green i started to hear some knocking so i turned off the a/c to see if it was me or another car. Needless to say it was me. As i started to accelerate the knocking seemed to go with the rpms, when i hit about 50ish it stopped and was fine the rest of the way home. Now i took basic engine classes in HS, but that was a long time ago, so im no expert. My first thought was a piston or lifter since it was going with the rpm of the engine, but i have never heard of a piston knock or a lifter problem going away 1 minuet after it starts, wich baffels me. I didnt notice any loss of power or anything, just the god aweful knocking ( and i didnt really push it since there is possably a problem). The check engine light came on and the cruise light is flashing, but this has happened to me before in the past. From what i gather the check engine light with the cruse is a sensor problem, but i have yet to get a diagnostic done as i am flat broke. I didnt drive my car to work today and when i got home i started it up and it sounds like its running fine, but the warning lights are still on. in the past when the light pops on, a few hours of sitting and the light goes off, so i was hoping this would be the same case. Once and only once when the warning lights came on, my car had zero power ( this was about 6 mons to a year ago), and i could put the pedal to the floor and go about 5 mph. That didnt last long and has been fine ever since. Now i did read a post on the web about a guy who took the same car to the track and had similar symptoms and it turned out that he didnt have much gas in the tank and when he took a high speed corner the gas got trapped on the driver side and wasnt being pumped (i think driver side, opposit the fuel pump anyways) which my have been my problem the one time i had zero power. I love my car and im scared to death to drive it and do any more damage. Any insight or advice would be much appreciated.
take it to your nearest autozone/advance/carquest and have them pull the check engine light (CEL) code or have someone come by with a code reader - we'll know more from that info than any forum/online diagnostics
I would not take it anywhere. Go rent the reader and bring it home and check what the code is. Check your dipstick how much oil is there? While you are at the parts store buy a brand new pan and drain your oil. Let the pan sit for 30 minutes or so. After it has sat for a bit pour out all the oil into a recycling container leaving just a cup in the pan. Now that last cup left in the pan should be inspected for "Glitter" or "shavings." If you see any stuff remove the filter and cut it open looking for more "stuff" If you don't see anything refill and report back.
well, just got back inside with the code reader and this is what it said.....POO11. "intake camshaft position timing - over advanced (bank 1). I reset it, started the car up and the light went off, and it seems to be running just fine. i let it idle for a bit and the light didnt come back on. I also changed the oil before hand and it was definatly low. i didnt fully examine the oil yet, but i periodically checked the pan for glitter over the course of about 45 mins as a preliminary check. the sun was beating on it and i didnt see any "shiney" forign objects. My best guess is that the little bit of time i heard the noise, the low oil tripped the cam sensor and the warning light came on. Also during the time the noise was happening, it was idleing normal and accelerated normal, so i dont think the timing was actually off. LMK if this sounds logical, and thx for the imput, its much appreciated
Good news, You need to remove the oil screens in the banjo bolts for the AVCS. That is what causes the code. Don't let your oil get below half way on the dip stick.
