as the title says ive got some problems with my car. i was driving to work the other day at about 65mph and all the sudden my car started randomly pulling to the right, mostly when coasting. next thing i know there is a clicking sound, not constant or consistant, coming from the right front of the car. i pulled over and checked to see if there was any visible damage on the tie rods and ends, cv joints which were recently replaced, and anything else and nothin. the sound only happens when turning right and accelerating. ive got a spare on the rear drivers side (TEMP.) but i doubt that would mess with the awd. im new to subaru's so im completely lost right now. T.I.A.
take off your front two tires when you have time and inspect your hubs. it may be a frozen caliper scraping against your rotor causing you to pull to the right, it may even be your wheel bearings are going bad, sand can get in there and really eat away at those bearings. who ever replaced your cvjoints might have dropped the male side in some metal shavings or dirt and the grits are mixing with the grease and gnawing at your bearings. if you cant see any damage or discrepencies get an alignment from jeff the alignment guy for like $50-100 and give it another try. edit: didnt even see you had a spare on. whoops. not a good thing broski
Bring it to a Subaru dealership and have real SUBARU mechanics service it, oh and put a full size tire on that thing yes the spare can cause issues. It is a temporary fix and intended to be temporarily used.
How long have you been running the spare? Get a full size tire on there ASAP and hope you didn't ruin any part of your drivetrain because of the size differential.
i drive 43 miles to work in the middle of no where hurley wisc. where i have no access to someone that could fix the flat so about 90 miles i guess, and its going back on today (no driving since i got home). ill take off the front wheels and inspect a bit further, im just hoping its nothing too bad : /
as for the caliper being frozen or the wheel bearing im not sure about, the sound is definatly coming from the right front and when the car would act up it pulled to the right edit: opposed to pulling to the left that would be caused by problems with the right. also i forgot to mention that sometimes, not all the time, the steering wheel would shake.
GET THAT SPARE OFF! you can and WILL destroy your center diff or worse doing that, its for temporary.
spare is off, everyone relaaaxxx. and for the last time it was temporary use and an emergency. i have been playing in the snow but i just got the car washed with the undercarriage wash and it still makes the sound, it hasent been pulling and for most of the way home from work it didnt pull, only once or twice
Yeah try driving summer only tires on uneven roads, you'll think your car is all messed up ... LOL! Edit* It will pull everywhere.
then what would be the clicking noise? and by the road do you mean that because of the conditions of the road and my spare being on could cause the awd to get confused resulting in the pull?
I had a nail in one of my tires and it made a horrid clicking/tapping sound every rotation, so at driving speed it was pretty constant and super irritating, that could be a possibility..? But I'd say just take your car into the dealer and have them take a peek. Thats one easy way to get an answer that is reliable.
1. pulling can be attributed to a number of things.. yes having a smaller tire will cause a rolling difference thus causing that wheel to rotate quicker, maybe smaller rolling diameter allows for a pull to one side as well... 2. people will relax about the TEMP spare when lazy people read their fricken manuals... 3. a caliper grabbing will cause a pull too.. but your rotor/wheel would be smoking pretty good and you probably wouldnt be able to touch the rim it would be hot... 4. it doesnt need to be taken to a dealer per se.. but take it to someone who KNOWs a little something about cars.... would be a first step 5. yes a nail in your tire will cause a clicking noise if in the right spot and as the air lessens it could cause a pull to that side.. 6. clicking noise could be from a cv joint.... 7. snow in your rims will cause a shake... or an unbalanced tire.. usually comes at a certain speed then goes again.. unless a real bad out of balance.. 8. condition of the road I believe he means how you see the grooves form all the traffic and your wheels are "tracking' along them as you ride the edge of the creases.. think of a train on tracks... or a roller coaster into a corner...
almost all roads are "crowned" meaning they have a slight slope to make water run off of them so you car should definatly not go perfectly straight.
2. people will relax about the TEMP spare when lazy people read their fricken manuals... sigghhh...... obviously i HAD to use the spare, no options there... i'll take a look again at the car and if need be i'll take it to get looked at by a mechanic. thanks to those who helped me. edit:2. people will relax about the TEMP spare when lazy people read their fricken manuals...
He's saying the temp spare isn't that bad, IF it is properly inflated. It IS the same outer diameter, so it won't cause problems.
ahhh gotcha, my bad i didnt mean to be defensive and i clearly mis-read the statement. but yes the spare was inflated to proper psi (60psi if i remember correctly)
well, bad news... i took the wheel off and i saw that the boot to the cv joint was loose from the metal band not being locked into place. i pushed the boot back and cleaned out all of the grease/dirt i could see. .
keep grease inside it, maybe get a new clamp if the boot is not torn. I was able to keep mine even with torn boots alive for almost 3 years.
it was definetly sandy greese, but ill pick some up and put a little in there. and i got the clip properly put back on so hopefully this doesn't happen again.
