EDIT: PROBLEM RESOLVED, subaru community to the rescue from noob idiocy. thanks brian. Today (friday) I took my car in for an oil change and diff fluid flush. I brought my own oil (mobil1 synthetic 5/30) and my own diff fluid. Story below... The oil change was done at 1pm and I drove straight home, 10 blocks. Drove the car to the MOA to go shopping with my son and back at 8pm, 5 miles round trip. THEN TONIGHT...I was going out with my wife, normal driving on the highway for 10 miles and I notice my oil pressure gauge goes to dead. I look in the rear view mirror and there is pouring smoke. I put the car in nuetral and coast over to the shoulder and shut everything down. Call the tow truck and my car is currently back in the parking lot at the place that did my oil change. No CEL, no oil light, no overheat, nothing...just oil pressure was GONE. Engine is frying, smoke everywhere. BOBBY AND STEVES Nicollet Avenue 5801 Nicollet Ave. S. Minneapolis, MN Phone: 612-861-6133 They open tomorrow at 6am. I'm hoping that someone with knowledge of 2002 wrx can come over and look at the car with them at some point tomorrow morning. I'm bringing a video camera to document what is found. I would like to know if they did something when changing the oil that would cause the failure.
could it be a blown head gasket?... check on the dipsick to see if the oil is milky.. just trouble shooting
Now im not bashing bobby and steves since we have a few goods ones we do business with. but theres a good chance they drained the wrong fluids. Ill be over in richfield in a few hours if you want me to swing by i can.
Just got back. The guy there took a quick look at it and said the oil level is perfect, but there is coolant leaking...so that's a good start. Sooo... no oil pressure, a coolant leak, huge cloud of white smoke, and no CELs/other lights/overheating Their "techs" should get in around 7:30. I asked him if it would be OK for an "independent" subi tech to take a quick look at it (I tried to be as nice as possible) and he said in a huff "we won't touch it until you tell us to". I again, tried to reiterate that I just wanted to be 100% sure it had nothing to do with the services done the day before and he wasn't real happy about it...I guess that's to be expected.
Might have double gasket on the oil filter and finally blew out after driving a bit. Or drain bolt wasn't tight
Conclusion: Coolant hose had a hole in it. Leaked out all over the engine and that caused the smoke. The oil pressure sending unit was doused with coolant and likely stopped working because of that. - Thank you Brian!
Ive had that happen to me...was so relieved. wife pulled over immediately. had it towed home, sure enough...dang double gasket!
