Not a Subaru question, but I was still hoping someone could help... My brother purchased upgraded internals for the HPFP on his MS3. There seems to be an issue with the part because it will not hold fuel pressure. From what I can tell, the shaft/piston is bent, or the aligning barrel is not made correctly and/or is not installed straight. The piston is binding and seems to get stuck occasionally which causes fuel to cut completely. The current issue is that we cannot remove the barrel from the housing. The barrel is part of the rebuild/upgrade kit, and the housing is part of the OEM pump. If we could get the barrel out, we could re-install the OEM barrel and piston and presumably stop the fuel cut. The only issue is that is seems to be wedged in, and it is a smooth, small cylinder, so it is impossible to get a grasp on. Here is a thread where someone had a similar problem (no apparent resolution): http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/forum/f303/camshaft-driven-fuel-pump-****-bed-83299/ *It appears the URL itself won't get past the swear filter. You'll have to paste the URL, remove the stars, and type in the "s-word" to get it to work. I don't have any photos of my own, but I'll use the photos from that thread to try to explain what the issue is. First, here is a photo of the parts that come in the upgrade kit. The The top piece is the piston. The bottom 3 pieces are a clip that holds the spring onto the piston. None of these parts are the problem. The larger silver piece on the right is the barrel. The piston slides through the barrel, and the barrel sits inside the housing (not part of the replacement kit). We can get the piston out of the barrel, but we can't get the barrel out of the housing. Here is a photo of the barrel in the housing: The barrel is sticking out of the bottom of the assembly. It is the part that is past (lower than) the threads. The threading, and everything above it is all part of the housing. I need to separate these two pieces, but I haven't been able to budge it at all. So far we tried cooling the barrel with canned air, putting the barrel end into a vice, putting the housing end into a vice, and pushing through from the inside with a screwdriver. The screwdriver really didn't have enough of a lip to push on. Clamping extremely tightly in a vice isn't enough to get it to budge at all. There doesn't seem to be any way to grab onto the barrel. I am basically considering the barrel a loss at this point. Destructive methods would be considered. If I can get that out we could reinstall the stock internals or get another set of upgraded ones. I considered trying to drill through the side of the barrel and then stick something like an allen key through and using it for leverage. I am concerned I won't be able to drill through it though. It appears to be some kind of hardened metal. The table vice didn't even make a mark in it. Any suggestions?
You tried spraying lube/penetrating oil between the barrel and the assembly? Have you tried spinning a nut onto the housing then putting the barrel in your bench vice? Try turning the nut to try to twist the housing away from the barrel. If that fails, kill it with fire. How much is a replacement housing?
Tried PBlaster all over. The housing has flats for an 18mm socket on top. I clamped the barrel into the vice and turned the housing with the socket. No matter how tight I clamped the vice, the barrel would still spin in the vice. I think heat of some kind might be the next step. Need to buy a small torch of some kind. You can only buy the entire pump. Cost is $500. He'll probably be ordering one today. Thanks. I was thinking that, but don't have a heat source. Might have to go pick one up.
I was being serious about killing it with fire. You can get a propane or map gas mini torch from sears for about 20 bucks. Sucks about the price
xluben... where you located.. you are welcome to run down to my place one evening and we can try 2 options.. 1 my MAPP torch or 2 My OAW setup.... I live in Jordan
My brother bought a used OEM pump, so for now the plan is to send the stuck part back to the manufacturer of the replacement internals and let them deal with it. If for some reason they can't get it apart, I'll let you know. Thanks!
If you have a can of compressed air flip it over and spay just the barrel. What is the threaded portion made of Steel? Aluminum? It also looks like there is a washer where that thing might come apart?
We tried cooling it with the compressed air trick. Even with that and putting it in a vice it didn't budge. It is still stuck but he has already replaced the parts.
