O.K I need a little help here, Tax refund time so it's finally time go to stage two with my daily driver. I can't make up my mind if I want to just add the down pipe with the stock exhaust or go ahead and add a new 3" cat back system? I have read all of the forums up and down so I think I' am more hesitant than ever. I do not want loud!!! but a little rumble would be choice. I like the looks of the Invidia Q300 with the catted down pipe but not sure on the volume of the exhaust. U-tube does no good for sound clips. Anyone here that I could hear a similar set up in person? So like I' am in my 40's driving around not looking for attention but want the performance for my car. Any advice on a quite set up would be great!!!! I still have to get my ass to some of the meets and meet some of you all. 09 sedan WRX************** thanks D
If you want a in person sound check, I would suggest attending the LAX cruise coming up? Save your pennies until you find something you like.
If you have a sedan, make sure you're only listening to sedan exhausts. The hatches sound completely different in many models. Also, a cat back does not add any performance. Just sound.
Too bad you have a sedan. I am going to be selling my SPT setup soon, which is even more tame than the Q300.
I've got a hatch with a Fast Motorsports catback. Might not give you any idea of a sedan, but you're welcome to a listen. Too ofspunk7, give me a holler is you let go of your SPT....
^ it is happening. I am about 60% of the way to my STI Q300 Quad Tip Dual Exhaust setup. I'll let you know. I hope to put it up for sale in 2 - 3 weeks.
I have a sedan with an Nvidia down pipe and SPT exhaust. Would be more than happy let you have a listen.
I wish ya luck Dirty! Very few people here are running catted DP's. And to be honest with ya, i've done sound tests with other members here and have had 3 bugeyes side by side, with the exact same exhausts but different DP's...they all sounded different. Go with the high performance catted DP with the stock system or SPT if you want quiet. Other than that, the Q300 is going to get you more attention. But the DP will change the sound of either system, so that's kind of the wildcard factor. GL!
You have a point Tangledupinblu, How much different is the stock vrs SPT? So I pull the trigger and buy the Invida catted DP and the q300 is there way to make it quiter if needed. I think it time just to do it!!! ********thanks for the replys***D
The Q300 and SPT are similar. The Q300 may be a bit louder, but not by much. The thing is that the Q300 has a very nice low sound. I personally think it sounds better than the SPT, but that is why I am selling my SPT for a Q300 setup, so I am one sided. The Q300 is also a higher quality exhaust. I would personally not waste my money on a new SPT exhaust. Now if you were talking a used SPT exhaust for $400 - $600 less than the Q300, then you would have something to think about.
Orly? The q300 is higher quality than the SPT? I'm pretty sure that SPT are reall yhigh quality pieces...but used is the only way to go in my book. Whether it's Invidia or SPT. It's ALL overpriced new.
AVO. nice low idle tone and only makes loud rumbles when your on WOT. Other subaru owners would be able to tell you have an aftermarket exhaust but to anyone else, it could be stock.
FYI - SPT says it is a 3" exhaust. It isn't on the 3G cars. It is only 3" at the axle back. Unlike every other exhaust that says it is 3" and really is 3". My SPT exhaust is fine, but there have been lots of 3G cars with SPT exhaust issues. I can tell you from looking at the welds done on my exhaust, that they are not "high quality". This is not an observation of my welding knowledge, this is me questioning the weld and the techs I was with agreeing that it was not great. SPT Flange Weld Issue Topic SPT Flange Weld Issue SPT Exhaust Issues SPT Weld Issues SPT for sale with Weld Issues You can find a ton more, just use Google. I know when I first got my car I was sort of pissed that I went for the SPT package... oh well. Mine has held up fine, but there are tons of threads about this 08+ issue. A lot of these happened months after putting the exhaust on... months... not years.
Well thanks for the info d-money! I didn't realise that Subaru would put a POS exhaust on the market...now i know! I still think that all of the systems out there are overpriced when buying them "new", especially when you can get a used one for half the cost! And it's SS...so it's not like it gets all rusty and whatnot.
I thought of that question right after I posted. I had the SPT exhaust on for about a year before I put the downpipe in. I never noticed a difference in sound except maybe at full throttle. Was a bit disappointed honestly. Could be that I am running a catted downpipe. I thought Subaru had eventually worked out the weld issue after is started happening? That does remind me that with four people in the car I have heard the exhaust clip the ground before. But outside of that I haven't had any issue with my SPT.
It could be! I would imagine that catted is quieter than non, but that's only a guess. So the SPT issues were on the 3g's only? I've never heard of any quality issues with the SPT's on the GD's.
I know that most of the issues I read about on 3Gwrx happened between 08 - 09. There was the occasional post here and there, but who knows if those were just exhausts made in the same time frame or later on. Mine was made in 09, it is fine. I guess it is always best to check these things out before you buy. Truth be told it will cost someone $20 to fix it, so not that big of a deal. I guess my thing was.... STP $600 exhaust has had quality issues of the past few year Not a true 3" exhast Q300 $650 exhaust never heard / read of quality issues true 3" (personal opinion) deeper, better sound
YES!!!! I did it!!! thanks for all of the help, I ordered from Import Image Racing. Invida catted DP with the Q300. Now I just have to find someone with tools Oh yea protune on the way. I might use the Cobb and flash first??
^ If you live in the area I would suggest a local tuner over AccessPort, however this has been a topic many times. Captainshiner's Thread Xluben's Thread
Congrats! Josh is a good guy. Are you getting an AP too? Using it to monitor things, or using the OTS flashes? I vote that you have Nuke tune it for ya. AP isn't really necessary.
I have had the AP for stage one. Thinking about RS motors for a tune, but keep the AP incase I ever need to go back??? I have read good things about both Ron and Nuke. I 'am looking for a safe daily driver tune. I supose I could sell the AP. I have heard I could store the protune on it as well.
Well i've had all of my tunes and work done by Matt and Ronnie at RS. You won't regret it. You could always sell the AP and recoup some money for the tune on the dyno. But it's really up to you what you want to do with the AP...maybe talk to Ronnie about what options you have with it before selling it.
If it will make you feel better you can just PM me everything. I'll respond with an encouraging remark like, "Wow Ben, you're a really smart person. That information really opened my eyes. Thank you for contributing in a positive manner. "
you will like it, I have the q300 quad tip on my sedan with stock down pipe at the moment not alot louder then stock only louder at around 2 to 4 thousand rpm. can't wait to hear what it sounds like the catless dp
I ordered up a Borla exhaust! It's shipping on 4/15 for my 2012 sedan! I can't wait! I heard the Q300 has some drone in the lower RPM's. I used a Prodrive exhaust on my 07 WRX and loved it.
I thought about the Borla but I have now commited to the Invida Q300 so I hope there is nooo drone with my set up. Good luck with the Borla
How does the borla compare to the Q300? Im guessing it's louder? How bout tone? I have the borla hush cat back on my 06.
I finally rode in a 2011 WRX Sedan with the Q300 yesterday. It sounds completely different than the 2011 WRX Hatch. There is no drone at all with the sedan. It is actually really quite quiet, but sounds good. The Q300 on the hatch is pretty loud. Sounds good if that's your thing, but gets tiring on long drives.
I would stay away from TurboXS for 3G cars. There is a whole tread dedicated to it on 3Gwrx. http://www.3gwrx.com/forum/index.php?topic=20996.0 There is a new version coming out. No reviews on it yet.
It sounds like most of those issues with the exception of the mid pipe is a sedan issue. The stuff I have read about the TurboXS hatch cbe has been nothing but high praises. Good info though!
