I just purchased a 98 Legacy GT with the 2.5 DOHC and I need to pull the motor to do the head gaskets. I searched for a how-to but didnt find anything.
Any info on pulling the motor and doing the gaskets? Also what else should I be doing or looking for while the motor is out? I was planning on getting a gasket set and just do them all, any place best for parts and what parts should I get.
I might go turbo in the future with the motor, should I get head studs?

What should I go through on the car, it has 160k miles but runs and drives fine. I plan on changing all the fluids, but know nothing of Subaru's and read few people having problems with types of oil.

Sorry for the long text and all the questions. I'm a newbie and need the advice and help lol
Also if anyone is local and has some spare time to come take a look and maybe help with it, I would greatly appreciate it and could buy you lunch or something for your time.

    Thanks :)

Pulled plugs and they dont look like coolant in the CC, The coolant is green and oils is not milky.
Also did a compression test and all cylinders are at 190. The Drivers side did loose compression very very sloooooowly though. Friend said it might just need the system bleed properly.
Is there any tricks on doing this?

How's it going? I don't know if you remember me, but you helped me put springs/shocks into my Honda a few years ago. I'm a Subaru owner now too. Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately I can't help answer any of your questions.

check cam journals, check cylinder walls, you can replace engine bearings if you want; that's what I did with my Dad's Outback motor plus new piston rings, rehone, redeck, and resurface block/heads.

If I remember right, I ended up cutting off the endlinks and driving without them for a couple months before I got around to ordering new ones.

I didn't go down to the rally. Was this on MNSC? Haven't been on their much in years. Kinda of just gave up on the Honda, LOL.

WOW!!! sounds like a full rebuild to me. Aren't Subaru's good for 300k if maintained properly?

Well I tried to bleed the cooling system. It did smoke out of the exhaust for a while (no huge clouds or anything), but after driving it up and down the street it stopped (moister in exhaust from sitting?). It still smokes very little every once and a while but that might just be from it getting colder out. It never overheated on me with or without the heater fan on. (ran for about 1.5 hours) Radiator fan turns on and everything, temp gauge stays just under half.
When I got back from driving it around I noticed it smoking under the hood. popped hood and coolant was on drivers side by battery and stuff, even on the hood. It does smoke at the radiator on the drivers side if I rev it up. I can smell and taste the coolant, but cant see any leaks or holes in or around the radiator. Was thinking it might be the cap, seems pretty weak (only a .9)
Right now I have the front of the car in the air, and will check it after work to see if maybe some air bubbles got out.
IDK, this car is confusing me lol

the coolant on your battery area is the overflow tank over flowing.

    Well that didnt work lol
Never overheated, just overflowed after I got off the freeway. Will be needing parts ASAP to get this junk fixed.
Is there a recommended brand to get for a gasket set? I'm going to be going turbo with the motor, so should I get different head gaskets then what comes in the full kits? I'm also going to be doing the timing belt.

Pulled motor last night, WTF took me 7hours :( damn thing was stuck to the tranny. I did notice the tranny and oil pan had dents in them from others jacking up in them.

When I pulled the motor away from the tranny, there was a tube that slide out of it that went over the torque converter. what is this?
I'm going to go pick up a book for the car today and pull the heads and stuff off.
Any place I can go to get cams or head work done? I want to go turbo and would like to get it set up for it now.

well I found the plastic cover for bolts lol
Took converter off, but cant get it to slide on all the way. Do I need to pull the outer sleeve out thats inside the transmission that I believe goes onto the converter?
Its really hard to find information on these cars and how to do stuff for some reason.

Start things off with an ebay borla replica header, meant for the 2.5RS.

still cant find that sleeve thing. idk if it goes on inside or outside of converter, or even how to slide it back out now that its pushed way in the transmission.

To me it sounds like you pulled the tube deal that goes behind the front seal on the trans out with the converter (because you arent supposed to take the convert)er off with the engine!)

Got motor all torn down. I must say the cylinders, pistons, CC, and heads look very very good. I can even see the honing marks still and can barely feel a very slight lip at top stroke.
Might be making a set of headers and 3" exhaust while I wait for parts to show up.
Also going to try and get the heads ported.
The only problem I still have is the stupid transmission and converter issue, anyone with knowledge of this willing to swing by and take a look at it?
