I put some new gauge faceplates in and when I put the needles back in the speedometer is now off by about 12 mph at 65 and the fuel gauge shows it is full at all times until when it gets to around 1/4 tank it starts dropping and so 3/4 tank on the gauge is my new empty. I have messed with it a few times and even got a friend involved who is very good with this stuff and we cant get it. Anyone had this problem or know how to help?
Wait, you pulled the needles off your speedometer?! If you did, you're boned. You are out the cost of a new gauge cluster. For faceplate cover sheets, you're supposed to maneuver them over the needles.
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho...&highlight=removed+needles+from+gauge+cluster It sounds like you might be able to fix it, but it's going to be very, very difficult. You may be better off finding a new cluster.
You may be able to take the cluster to D&D instruments to get the needles re-done, dont quote me on that though.
Because the needles don't have a zero point. They "zero" by resting on the stop post. So there isn't a reference point for zero. The only way to get it to work right after pulling off the needles is to either get really lucky when you put them back on and manage to nail it exactly right, or you have to inject a sine wave that is equal to a known value for a set speed from the ECU and then place the needle on pointing at that known speed. Or, the last option mentioned in the Nasioc thread essentially says, "Go drive around, then using a GPS speed monitor or a device that reads the speed from your ECU, hold your speed at 35mph, and then while driving, try to jam the speedo-needle onto the stepper motor post so that it points at the speed you are going." That idea there is about the dumbest and most irresponsible thing you could possibly do. And if you get into an accident, you deserve the chair.
alright well thanks for the input that sucks but I will have to try the gps thing. "And if you get into an accident, you deserve the chair." Very true but I gotta laugh at the way you put it.
yeah i took the needles off my cluster a couple months ago and found out that it is a PITA to get them back on right. I just ended up getting a new cluster, and taking the whole gauge parts (little motors with the face plates for gauge from the electrical board) off the new one and put it on the old one so i still had all my original mileage and such... it isnt that hard to do! i can post pics on how to do it if you want....
