I think a black and white rules list is just what this forum needed. There are dozens of forums out there that allow anything, and have no structure or enforcement. and I think they're all a waste of time. This site has always been one of the few with usable information that isn't entirely cluttered with crap.

I'm helping reformat an Xmod forum right now, and it's amazing how much a clear cut rules list has helped. We use the infraction system (I assume this is the 'points' you guys are referring to), and it's also helped us make sure that the people who are repeatedly breaking the rules get effectively and fairly dealt with.

if nothing else, it sure has made it easier on us mods.

Keep up the good work guys!

oh yea, sorry to hijack back to the original topic...

having rules is a good thing. I think its great that the club has in writing that we do note promote skreet racing or illegal activites. also the swearing filter is a good thing. personaly i dont need to read other people explitives. if you want to post them fine, but let the filter get them. if poeple really want to see it that can cypher out what the *s mean. or we could always got back to "hot carl" lol.

the one thing that doesnt sit quite right with me is the whole hijacking thing. granted hijacking threads is bad. but this is a discussion board, and sometime s a little OT point can bring up alot more information on a current topic. i guess what i am asking for is there to be some discresion (yes i know more grey area) about posts. if the post is a hijack but still kinda pertains it should be ok. but stuff like ZOMGZOMGZOMGZOMGZOMG w00t. teh drunkzorz posting, has to go.

you know what, when i implemented this all of you guys ripped on it....ever since it went away you guys are always missing it. my vote is to get rid of the asteriks and put it back to they way i had it with words like boink, hot carl, littl boys, etc

The problem I thought was that some people didn't know what text was inserted by the filter and what people had typed in themselves. ie, carl doesn't like being called hot, and you didn't know you were going to be calling him hot... something like that, you know?

Us mods have been reading this thread and we are making note of the comments/suggestions though.

I'm thinking that maybe it would be beneficial to have slightly more laxed rules in the OT section. That way people get all their sillies out in OT so that the rest of the board could stay relatively on topic.

Also, I'm sure you could make OT only viewable by registered memebers. Although I think that might be something similar to the whole "18-plus" section someone mentioned earlier.

That actually gets me thinking... I know that you can set some forums so that their exclusive to registered members. Does the software allow for limiting certain forums for some and allowing them for others. What if people could check a box in their settings to "pg-13" or "rated-R?" That way people who need to surf at work can keep it clean and people who want to be silly (in OT) won't feel like they're in mother russia.

I'm just thinking out loud here. What are your thoughts?

Well to verify this whole thing after talking to two females here (who also are automotive enthusiasts) they found the comment vulgar. Yes as a guy you or I may or may not see it that way but some of the opposite sex do find the overall comment vulgar. I know the female population on the board is small but we are trying to cater to everyone.

I have yet to see any of the new mods see this as a power thing. Everyone is just trying to follow what was said in the rules. As a new mod it is/has been hard to judge when things may have gone too far. Everyone is doing their best. This is an adustment period for all of us too. Try to keep that in mind.

You have talked to 2 female members about this ALREADY?? I was sure we only had about 3 female members, im calling bs. Either way, I still say "power hungry" and taking your new rules that I thought were decent to a whole new level. Good luck with that.

Do you ever look down in the shower and say, "God that thing makes me sick, it's so vulgar."

And this isn't cable TV, this is a web forum. Serious business.

    good analogy...

do you really think if you asked a girl if she thought calling a guy a "****" is vulgar...she'd say yes?...i dont think so.

    "stop being a ****"...
    "quit being a vagina"..

to me they are the same.

EDIT: those asteriks rhyme with tick

That was your first mistake. You must only address other members in an official business fashion. Name. Rank. Member number. In that order.

Good day Justin, Subie Guru, member number 186. Let us discuss on the topic of the Subaru automobile if that would be pleasureable to you and completely non-offensive.

I see a couple things going on here. There seems to be two types of people on here. Those that want this to be a dedicated car forum. Others use it as a medium for social connections. Hence, the club within the club.

On the majority of threads here, especially the technical, I can see where hijacking and whoring get annoying. However, other threads like firestone or spotted are on-going and should be more lax compared to something technical.

Some people need to lighten up as well. Like others have said, we are a diverse crowd, and we need to accommodate everyone. MNSubaru is not going to be this clean happy place with flowers and bunnies. On the other hand, it cannot be a ruff free-for-all with f bombs everywhere and explicit BS. We all seem pretty resonable, and able to handle ourselves. If someoneis a problem, they obviously need to be dealt with.

How about we lock this thread for a week, let everyone cool down a notch, and discuss what needs to be on a level head. I got a wriled at first, obviously, hehe. But there genuine concerns about the atmosphere here.

    a couple thoughts..

first off PLEASE do not lock this thread....this has been one of the better brainstorm threads we've had for awhile, please dont ruin that cause its hard to come by on here.

i agree the complete hijacking of information threads is bad, but in moderation it is fun and keeps the place busy.

you are NEVER, i repeat NEVER going to be able to 100% appeal-to/accomodate EVERYONE on this board. which then goes back to my thoughts of appealing to the most common group, the target market as i called it. when the target market makes up 85% of your club/forum/business, you need to appeal to them(members/clients/whatever).

    Justin

ps-this isnt directed at you piddster, but at the overall current thoughts of the mods/everyone

If it is ok with you, Justin, Subie Guru, member #186, I would like to tell you that I don't fall into the demographical segment of 18-25 year old males. I apologize for using the word male in this sentance as it is a reference to gender which involves identification by way of acknowledging the genitals which makes the man child of the Christian God, also known as Jesus, sob tears of sadness. If you don't find it offensive I would like to simply point out that although I am not of the stated demographic (if that's ok with you) I am of the persuasion of people that find the entertainment targeted to said demographic to be humorous, I hope you don't take offense.

As a female mod I'll be happy to jump in then.... "Vagina" is *not* a swear word. However when you put in an offensive sentence then the *statement* becomes offensive.

When you start to focus on the individual words, taken out of the statement in which they were posted, your rant becomes pointless. Unfortunately vulgar statements have to be reviewed by mods because some people insist on posting them.

No offense taken. Things seem to have become a little heated, but its all good.

All I see is friction between the people that hang out on this forum as a social group and the people that are not associated with said, dare I say it, click. Thats the trouble with a local forum. You have people that become friends, and issues ensue like hijacking and other vulgar material that they would say to each other in person. Others get very annoyed with this behavior (sp) and we are where we are in this thread.

On a national thread, like the BBS, these issues do not exist, since there is no local group to overrun the forum.

It is impossible to eliminate the local banter since many of us are in such close proximity to each other.

Another great use of the new powers. A mod goes in and gives his unwanted opinion about who should be riding what motorcycles and the thread goes to hell... then he locks it. Real nice. Shouldn't you be setting an example for others to follow instead of dragging threads off topic and then locking them. Thought so.

unwanted opinion? The OP never said jack to me about it. Its a forum. its where you go to get opinions from people, I gave mine. Or am I not supposed to have opinions? I guess you haven't seen anyone die are get maimed doing exactly what the OP was talking about. I have. why don't you go through my posts and find something insulting that I say about anyone in the thread. I'm talking about statistics. cold, hard, unforgiving statistics here.

use of new powers? The power to moderate a discussion that was getting pointlessly personal, way offtopic and where other members were trading insults? moderators moderate that's not a new power... its been being done since the BBS days and its been going on here on this site since long before I was a mod.

My reasons had to do with the fact that people were openly insulting each other completely off the topic. This is what we would do in any thread. I didnt drive the thread offtopic, I simply said things some people didn't like to hear, who got their panties in bunch about it. Note that far more people AGREED with what I was saying than disagreed.

So I'd set a better example by saying "sure go buy a bike that is statistically likely to kill you or someone else." sorry, I dont have that switch where I can just turn my common sense off.

Break out your glasses and reread that thread and tell me where I posted ANYTHING off the topic of whether or not the ~17byear old OP should buy a RACE REPLICA 600 CC SUPER SPORTS bike. I'm allowed to have an opinion, I expressed it. I didn't drag the thread down, the fact of the matter was that there were a bunch of other people saying the exact same thing I was saying, and that that thread was doomed to get worse and worse as time goes on. If this had been on a motorcycle forum he would have gotten flamed a zillion times worse. Its one of those kinds of threads, sorry.

If you want to talk about thread derailment, blame the people who started making things personal or started tossing around insults. In fact most of the posts were specifically showing concern for the well being of another member's safety. If people didnt care, they wouldn't have posted. Brian has pulled these guys corpses off the road. I've seen kids crippled and killed, and I'm sure others have the same stories to tell.

The OP took the suggestions in stride and seemed to be learning and playing nice until he got offtopic at the end and questioned another person's car/driving/responsibility. It was other people who crapped up the thread before that.

If you want to talk to me more about it, you know where to find me.
