You'll find this site to be a good resource when you start looking at performance upgrades for the sake of actual performance. You're not going to find much depth of experience or people who share your taste in the type of "visual mods" you're after. This group isn't big on form over function. Especially when the "form" in question squarely nails a bevy of horrible 90's ricer stereotypes along with a few ignorant redneck stereotypes thrown in for good measure, complete with flippant attitude. More power to you for doing what you like. That said, be prepared for a similar reception from just about any Subaru enthusiast forum community. You might like mnsportcompacts.net.
see im sure the majority of people here are great grp of guys. that said i try to never put people down or attack their interests. but definately will throw the attitude switch if targeted. i guess i was working for most of the 90's and missed alot of the stereo types. im assuming the redneck thing refers too the Radio coms or the Small arms im firm believer if we all Carried there would be alot more dead bad guys. . Other than the Led or the vinyls id say the list i made was a good set of functional things. Im looking for some guys too get to know and have a good time. eventually when that warranty expires or the wife buys her Outback she wants ill get to the power mods i want where mechanical know how will def be appreciated. i figured this be a good place too do the whole introduction thing and shoot the BS. Im a old fashion guy this prolly only 3rd forum i ever posted on. more used too talkin face to face having a drink at a BBQ or something that way i could tell hey this guys bustin my chops having fun or hey need to shove teeth down dudes throat. hard to tell online right ? Over all this community is a good 1 im looking forward too meeting some peeps at the rally cross in Cannon Falls or the Charity thing in St Cloud Me and my Wife are trying to see if we can attend ATM. She does 24/7 daycare so her schedule is king. I suppose a guy could throw a piece of dynamite into a crowd but ill just go with hey all nice to meet you.
That works. I think you'll find it's a pretty laid back group overall, particularly in person. We're also smart-asses with decidedly dry senses of humor. Say hey if you hit the S4B cruise. I'll be the festively plump bald bastard. There are a good many members that you can talk firearms with all day long. Most of them would prefer fewer dead people in general, but I'm sure you can find a kindred spirit in there somewhere. You're going to be hard pressed to find one with a burning 'merkan flag on their ride though.
yeah im lookin forward too meetin some people i been in the truck for so long havent hardly visited with anyone over a decade im a touch introverted and a lil on the defensive side in general when it comes too meeting new people. Its not that id like to see more dead people in general, just the real bad 1's lol. St cloud has a good size gravel lot out back so im sure thats where everyone will be a parking.
My dad was on the road (long haul) for about 28 years combined. Just retired from Anderson Trucking Services in St. Cloud last year...now he's golfing everyday and working on his rental properties. Welcome to the site! The cops will give you more attention if you add any ghost flames or crazy paint schemes. I personally think that you should have the top wrapped with black/flat black vinyl instead of white paint assuming that your car is Plasma Blue Pearl. White would be a really heavy contrast and a little too wierd looking IMO. Maybe go custom flip down screen in the middle of the headliner for the kids? Headliner is cheaper to replace than seats if you ever decide to sell the car. I've seen plenty of Subarus with CB's/Ham radios and "Back to the Future" style antennas! lol. Underglows and whatnots...come to a meet and see the 58 year old guy with the Honda, bumpin stereo, nitrous, and underglow everywhere...you'll probably change your mind on those! LOL. Don't be 'that' guy! A good stereo...i don't care how young or old you are, can't go wrong with a tastefully clean sounding sound system! I love mine! Subaru's stock system sucks. It has gotten slightly better over the years, but only marginally. Again, welcome to MnSubaru! -Josh (you can't have me for $20...i am worth much more than that...Lee )
yeah i suppose i dont need those lights i been thinking bout those they prolly be a maint head ache in the long run. still thinking about ditching the wing tho i wonder how much that would cost too remove and clean up the trunk lid IE fill in the bolt holes and paint match
There are a number of folks running around with wing deletes. Normally they just buy a new/used wingless trunk.
Ok, I am going to make one more observation. Well, a couple. But whatever. First, you asked for opinions on your list of mods. You got them. Your response was "I'm old, and I don't care what people think." And I am probably the person on this site most likely to give you maximum respect for that attitude. I agree with it wholeheartedly. But here's something to keep in mind. The responses you got here are, essentially, in a vacuum. The Subaru community is usually pretty good to its members for the most part. Any negative responses you get, are there because the people here honestly don't like your mod list. And you can, of course, stick to your guns and say "I don't care." And that's fine. But you also mentioned that you are looking to meet people and make friends around here. The social world is unfortunately not as well filtered. And it sounds a little shallow, but in all honesty, gearheads and car guys have built a pretty good internal sensor for things we don't like. And while prejudice is shallow, it does a pretty good job of weeding people out. Unfortunately, in your case, the internal sensors are usually pretty well tuned to tacky modifications and 'look at me' stuff. And alot of people are going to, in the most polite verbage, 'distance themselves' from it. Yes, again, I understand it sounds shallow, but it is a fact of life. And I don't mean to dissuade you from hanging out with, what is for the most part, a really great bunch of dudes. (For reference, I sold off my last subaru this spring, and I still hang out with these people because they are great friends.) But your social experience here may hinge on your selection of mods. You have probably seen a few references to "that Honda guy" in this thread. Everyone that has been to the HarMar lot knows who this is because you can't miss him. He is cocky and has a "I don't care" attitude, but he's also there for social interaction with gear heads. Unfortunately, nobody there goes beyond the first encounter with him or his car because, well, gearheads typically don't like the attention mods scene. And you seriously can't miss this guy. Slammed Honda accord coupe with lambo doors, chrome "rimz", underbody neons and little blinking LEDs all over the place, tons of TV screens...he's what we refer to as a "that guy." Usually accompanied by a roll of the eyes. I want for your Subaru community experience to be as stellar as 99% of the people here have had. And I'm not saying "Stick to what we tell you to do to your car, or else" or anything like that. There are plenty of visual mods that can be done to a car without hitting 11 on the tacky meter. There are tasteful body kits and some really nice wheels out there, I have even seen alot of nice vinyl work on cars. Everyone has their own tastes in modifying a car, and that's perfectly fine. But what I am saying is, your taste, while it is uniquely yours, may cause your experience in the Subaru social world to suffer a bit. I know you want to make dad's car cool for your kids, but there is alot more that can be done tastefully to a car that will appeal to the kids that will also have the benefit of not getting you socially shunned in the car world. And what fun is doing mods that the kids are proud of, if you can't drag the kids out in your cool car to an automobile enthusiast social setting and show it off. Kids are intuitive. And they will pick up on the fact that 90% of the people at the meet are cringing at your car.
well its 470 bux for a diferent trunk lid with only primer on it. and 429 for a small paint matched WRX style spoiler. have too check on cost of filling those holes and matching yet.
You can get a paint matched spoiler on eBay for a lot cheaper I bet. I got one for my Z for 90 bucks shipped. And that's a new ABS spoiler with a fresh spray of paint on it. I would look around.
A very insightful read. That said attempting too break the ice in any community after a period of social isolation like 12 yrs in a truck is difficult for myself and what better way than jump into the fire i guess. Knowing what you want or how to do it or even if your sure you want what you think you do is hard thing also ive had my car only a few weeks. And know that ive had a chance too sit back and think about it trolls have their purpose and after reading thru the thread again you guys arent all that mean or attackish just as you said pointing out thing you percieve as bad taste perhaps so im gonna take another look at my list and get out the eraser on some things as you guys have helped to provoke thought b4 money was spent and entertained while doin it ill say thanks alot.
It sounds like you're interested in learning what's out there. There are a couple "last of the season" shows going on this Saturday that may be worth your while to hit the cities for. First there's Cars & Coffee early in the morning. http://mnsubaru.com/threads/official-mn-c-c-cars-and-coffee-cafe-meet-up-thread.36065/ Then RKC is having a big ol' "show" in Plymouth in the afternoon: http://www.facebook.com/events/388727847860934/ You'll likely be able to see a little bit of everything at both of those shows, including a few "that guy" examples. I have little doubt one or both of those events will give you some options to consider.
Pretty much decided Vinyl is not gonna happen all the shops in my area pretty much see it as cheap advertising and dont want too even attempt to do it on a car like mine for fear of ****ing it up they said. So any visual changes will be done Via paint collecting ideas atm in regards to that. I like the stock color but hey Even tho its suposed to be limited its not unique enough yet.
Sounds to me like you'll fit in just fine here Honestly, I too like a good looking car. And just like alot of people, I came into the car world and thought I wanted TV screens and body kits. But I did exactly what Surly Old Man just suggested above this post, I went to a few car meets where the gearheads were out with their cars, and saw alot of things that I had no idea existed. I immediately became obsessed with power modifications. My car was very low, but not so stupid low that I had to screw up the camber on my wheels or run stretched tires and bang out my fenders to make them fit right. And I really only did that because I liked the look. But a large majority of the money I spent on my car was to make it fast. That isn't everyone's game though. I know with the 350z, I have no intention of doing go-fast mods really...though I did get emasculated by my wife shortly after the wedding when her bone stock G35x sedan walked all over me from a stop light on HWY 61 southbound, and it has made me re-think my stance on that. Honestly, for me and the Z, or any car for that matter, a nice set of wheels and tires, some springs that lower the car around an inch, and a good cleaning are usually enough to make people take notice...and in a GOOD way. We used to get TONS of attention the WRX when I had it, and aside from it being 3" lower than stock and having a set of 3 piece Work wheels on it, there really wasn't all that much on the exterior that was beyond stock.
Sat is gonna be a bad day for our family son passed on oct 6 5 yrs ago and still a rough day with the wife, but maybe a trip could perk things up a bit. ill try too convince her. keep her from dwelling on it maybe. she holds on to things like that a lil more than i do.
ive actually considered the suspension mod thing and i think id want to go up a inch. Im into go fast too, but more over the hills and thru the woods sideways goin 90 type of guy lol. my first 02 wrx was slammed and it used too scrape alot on driveways ect used to make me cringe. Figure even if i did like a 1-2 inch lift or hmm buy a dial it in style i could go up or down then. well anyway i like fast in a str8 line on tar and fast sideways thru the dirt. ah hell fast is fast and fun regardless. Id like to go to some of these meets though lots of food for thought there i bet.
You could do worse for a pleasant distraction. C&C is arguably the biggest/best show in the state save for perhaps Back to the 50's. Though it has become considerably more ricey lately, there is still a good representation across a whole slew of car cultures. This weekend is your last chance at it until next spring/summer. Fall colors aren't bad either.
Not sure what's up with the newer platforms, but the 02-07 Impreza was a shared platform with the Forester from around the same time. The suspension bits bolted right up. You might want to look around and see if anyone on Nasioc has done this with the newer Impreza platforms. The Forester suspension is quite a bit taller than the Impreza, and would likely raise your car the 2" or so that you are looking for.
This thread is good for the lulz, but let's be real. Shouldn't this be in the "Welcome Mat" section, if anywhere? Also OP, cleaning up your grammar and spelling will get you a little further towards universal acceptance.
ive been reading that the forester platform is a stretched STI and alot of the parts just bolt up last article i saw was in regards too the 08 models will have to look into it for the foresters from 2011. 1 thing for sure its still hard to get used to driving a car from a semi the height diference and accel. used too have the truck governed at like 68 so id just put my foot down to the floor and leave it there all day, do that in the car next thing u know ur flying previous car i traded in chevy cruze rs accel wasnt so steep big power dif so id notice right away b4 i got in trouble, the subi says weeeeeeeee lets go.
You sir are probably correct but i finger peck when i type i have crippling arthritis so i use just my pointers to type. as far as grammer correction yeah thats not gonna happen im set in my ways and long as peeps get the jist of the msg im happy with it if your not can always block me if your a english teacher or something. My bad grammar might hurt ur eyes. Hell sometimes i even surprise myself with what comes out of my fat fingers. Getting some feed back here on some ideas and meeting people at the same time. so far as forum location goes dont really know. mods have god power and can move it if they think it got too far off topic not looking for universal acceptance just general, bad spelling FTW.
no that was many cell phones ago and i didnt even own a camera then unfortunately it was silver and sat in the garage or parking lot at work while i was gone in the semi.
Spend every possible penny on mods to make it as fast as you can go. The end P.S. if you wanted to do gay stuff like TV screens and sub woofers buy a 300c like every other retard.
Talk to Chris at Flawless Front Ends. He would be a bit of a drive for you, but does amazing work and is a great guy! I'm sure that he'd be willing to do the roof vinyl for you and wouldn't even ask you to run a FFE's advertisement sticker on the bumper! Lol. http://mnsubaru.com/reviews/flawless-front-ends-and-window-tint.37832/ Hope to see you and the fam at the next rallyx, and who knows...you may want to drive your car in the one following this one. You wouldn't be the only new STi that graced our track!
Yeah i already want to drive in it but gotta get a helmet a 8 channel radio well i may have the radio some where but the wife isnt wanting the car to get that dirty lol. we have hotel reserved tho so we will be down there on the 14th to vist and watch unless something bad happens . I think you are required to work the track in order to drive on it tho not sure id be much use in the regard. well i suppose i could shake my cane at people and yell ' You kids stay off my track'
got 1 sub already and dvd/nav/xp/ect already, must be a chrysler i was wondering why they wanted to finance my car now i know.
Lol. Basically to "work the track" you just stand on the course and pick up a cone if it gets hit, then call it in so they can deduct points for said driver. You can also "start cars", which is very easy too and doesn't require moving much at all. We could find a place for ya! Just tell her there is a benefit to getting it dirty once a month...getting it cleaned! lmao
