I read up on that also. Redline is a no-no. Stick to Dino oils and whatever Subaru crap has, should be good. People have gotten these replaced from the right people at the right dealerships. BUT, that car is pushing 103k miles and most likely does have worn gears or whatever the hell goes wrong in there. Can you rebuild these things yourself, or is this a professional's job? In regards to time and difficulty level... is this about a 12 pack project or are we talkin about tappin a keg and ordering Domino's?

Word of mouth has it that you most likely have to live with the grinding issue or else pay the big bucks - i don't think its pizza project done in your heated garage. Indeed its not a cheap fix and requires a shop to do it.

How much is a professional rebuild, or used one; anyone know?

Used, good shape 6-speed cases are typically in the $1500-3k range. New from the dealership I think they are right around $4k... 3rik or bielke can help you with that. Rebuild cost depends entirely on what needs to be rebuilt. But let's just put it this way, if you're gonna pay for the labor to crack it open, inspect it, rebuild it with new parts, and reassemble it, you should start looking at used cases.

^^^ This makes me miss the wonderful days of my 4L60e tranny rebuild. I got my Stage 1 rebuilt tranny from a dude on Craigslist for $500. He's gonna rock a Borg-Warner T-56 manual, and was swapping engines to a 6.0L Chevy truck engine.

I'm have to assume a $3k investment is in the future for that lovely STI... that sucks.

The one in Stevens Point looks and sound "decent". Not a hugely great deal in that batch. I would RUN away from the ads that have "a nice body kit but one of the side skirts fell off and I don't have it anymore". Really!??? The guy LOST a side skirt and you'd consider buying a car from him? Take a look at the NASIOC for sale forums too. And don't forget to shop Legacy models too.

    If I was shopping...

    or

    http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/cto/2048385132.html

both could use a $1000 price drop to make them pretty good deals. If you've got your eye on an STI only I'd look hard for a quality used one and pounce when you find it. They don't come up often and when they do they sell suprisingly quick in today's recession market.

Just look for a built motor swapped GC. Lower insurance and cheaper tabs too

    2006 Subaru WRX TR - $14500 (Wausau)
    Date: Thu, 11 Nov 2010 04:08:19 +0000

only mods that consist are 3"hks hi-power exhaust system and hks ssqv bov. minor problems= 1. clutch is slipping, so that needs to be replaced soon. its still driveable and 2. car needs to be tuned/flashed with cobb accessport tuner....im getting an code for cel and cruise control...the check engine light is on steady, while the cruise blinks...it does this and then will turn off, then do it again and repeat. i have not got it read yet at autozone, i did take it into a subaru dealership and they told me it just had to be "reset" the ecu, so they did that and it went away but came back within a week again...I dont assume they know much about subaru combined with performance parts. Its due to my mods...does not affect performance of the car. its a common subie thing that will happen if u mod it. thats all no major issues 2 light things that need to be addressed. I'm the 2nd owner, I'm 23 and its adult owned...i dont have the time/funds to fix it up or mess with it, as I'm in a financial situation...either want to trade or sell as if, otherwise i can fix it up myself and just keep it. thats it to be honest. light issues only and easy fix. i have it up on nasioc.com everything else is unmolested...bought the car BONE-STOCK and i do have the stock parts, (stock muffler/bov) to return it back to 100%. alot of people might be scared when i tell them these 2 things but if your a true subaru enthuasist or mechanic, u know it's minor work only. will send u the link when i find it.

I'm with ya on that white one. I'm not going out of state for a car. Too risky I think. Could be such a waste, but I did get good advice about having a seller get their car compression tested be a reputable dealer and sending a lot of pictures.

    What's a GC?

Sorry, it's the chassis code for the generation of imprezas before the ones you are looking at (GD = 2002-2007).

Depending on what you want to do with this car it might be a good option. They're noticeably lighter than the newer imprezas, are a ton of fun to drive, and are plenty capable. Having gone from a wrx to an sti to a gc to swapping the gc and having a legacy gt in the household, I kinda wish I would have skipped the wrx and sti altogether. But that's just my preference... I didn't like the kind of attention the wrx and sti drew.

^^ I thought the Porsche also draws some attention especially in traffic. I can see chicks eyeballing you at the lights. Just out curiousity how many other people drive a porsche at your work place?

You're talkin to a guy that had a bright red Camaro with rally stripes, shiny chrome vette rims, a giant bottle of NOS in the back window, and an exhaust note capable of vibrating a bra latch loose when I dropped the hammer.

I like the GD generation's looks too much, so I'de rather stick to those, plus it goes back to that deal of all of the work involved in taking care of a project like that. I'm not a fan of working on my car more than driving it. But nothing's more satisfying than spending a weekend under a car and then finally breaking it out and back to life onto the streets.

Ughhh, Illinois. Looks to be a good choice being stock, but it's above Blue Book which doesn't seem appropriate with our crappy economy as it is. It should be about $14k/$15k. I don't like dealers either, heightened pricing and all of the extra fees and crap, but you probably get a warranty.

Fair enough. Just a suggestion. I would still recommend test driving one though. You never know ;)

Hell, KBB says $5500 for an '01 w/ 100k miles. You could get away with a reasonable total cost tossing a nice engine in there, but I don't know that there are many with decent mileage. Other stuff will be failing and need repairs.

Dang it Silverline, your damn STI keeps buggin me! Can't we pretend the tranny is out and lower the price? Lotta stiff miles on that little beast of a machine... I'll take care of it and do it proud. Just don't look at my avatar.

I bought my 00 2.5RS for $1500. Sold the motor and (aftermarket) suspension for $1700 and put a couple grand towards a donor car. All said and done I was $3k out of pocket and was able to do a lot of preventative maintenance and even got a hold of a few nice aftermarket pieces. Mines on the cheaper, beat-the-****-out-of-this-car end of the scale, but you get the idea.

Anyway, I guarantee you that whatever direction you end up going, you'll end up with a decent size wish list for upgrades

^^^That definitely turned out to be a decent project, but you're a lot more advanced with the Subie mechanics than me. I never have time for working on stuff it seems. I hear you have a hell of an operation at your place. I gotta stop by one of these days with Berge and hang out. I might stop in when him and Jake/Weggy come over.

...and I know where I'm goin when I run into problems, haaaa.

I might have to just truck it again this winter and wait till Spring when Subaru's aren't in as big of demand. They are higher in demand can sell higher currently. Anyone think this may be the case also...? Are they typically priced higher than Blue Book value?
