Green, with all the work that you did, whats a rough estimate on price for everything? I have a 02 wrx sitting with high miles and would like to know just how much more bite your motor came to life with the revamp.

Already in the works on that, but since Green just had the work done and is a 3rd party source on how much the work changed the car I wanted to know how much it changed. Can only learn so much from numbers, I'm looking for 1st hand experience right now to help me in making my final decision to have the work done and if so just how much work I might want done. As for the price ?, it was more toward the extras that he picked up on top of the motorwork.

    Hi,

Price is very much dependent on what you actually decide to have done and how much labor and machine shop time is involved, so I would prefer not to quote any numbers on behalf of NF. I will tell you that Nuke is very good about consulting and discussing options ahead of time. We probably spent more than 3 hours combined discussing options ahead of the build. I will also say that the estimate that he gave me on the labor side of the discussion was very reasonable and it matched very closely to the final bill at the end. I bought a lot of my parts used via MNSubaru and on NASIOC. All the standard scammer warnings apply, but if you are shrewd and patient you can get some good deals.

I would also recommend that you spend some time researching exactly what you want to do. Nuke is a great resource, but I would also recommend spending time on NASIOC. I had not really intended to replace my transmission when I started, but after researching the likely gains I would get through my mods (stroking and improved breathing especially) I realized that failure of the five speed was a significant risk. I wound up chosing the JDM six speed route for the shorter gearing which I think will match well with my fatter torque curve.

I hope to get both my upgraded '03 WRX with the 2.1 liter and my '11 STi (also tuned by Nuke) dynoed this summer. The "butt dyno" tells me that they are much closer together in performance now than they were before, but its difficult to say how close for sure. This is especially true because I am trying not to overstress the five speed since I hope to be able to sell it after the swap. If you look at what others have seen from similar builds, the average increase is probably something like from about 165 whp on a stock 2.0 WRX to maybe 210 or 220 whp for a 2.1 still using the TD04 turbo. I may be getting a bit more due to improvements in breathing and fuel delivery, but this is probably in the ball park. It is very noticeable.

Last comment I would make, and you will see this mentioned earlier in the thread, is that this modding stuff is addicting. You should be aware that many people find that the project is never really done because they continue to look for what else could be done. I am at a pause right now, but after I swap the tranny and differential and make some suspension and brake upgrades, the car will be in a position where it could easily handle much more power. So... I am now wondering about a bigger turbo and bigger injectors this summer. Maybe a Blouch 18G with 1000cc injectors. I drive the car a lot, so I don't want to get too crazy, but we'll see. It is a lot of fun, but it is not free.

Happy to discuss further if you like.

    Mark

Well Green, thank you for that great info. I understand not discussing pricing on the work as it varies. I didn't hear much about the 5 speed transmissions so that info is really helpful. I knew the 02's were weak in that area and that the 03's had some improvement so I was just gonna stick with the 03 tranny that I had put in the car last year. 3 hour discussion huh? Did you buy him lunch? lol. No thats great that you got 1 on 1 time with Nuke before going into the build, which is something I need to do soon.

Hey NF, did you guys start up a pic section for your builds yet? I think it would be fantastic to see the work you put in and some finished product/numbers posted. (Especially in regaurds to the 2.0 turned into 2.1's) if you can lol

Just wanted to say thanks to both Nuke and Fuji for their advise and support on my build. You guys provide a service for this community that goes way above and beyond what anyone can ask. I wish you nothing but the best and will support your business whenever I can. Thanks again, you made the build process a pleasant one!!

Lol, thanks for the revival! I actually ended up putting a few of the typical bolt on's together and received a Nuke tune a few weeks ago. I'm happy with where the car is right now, until I get too comfy! ;)

Sounds like a good idea. 10k - 15k for a 12 second car.... I like it. I mean why would you buy a used Subaru that can do that stock! Might as well buy a 90's Honda because FWD.
