Thanks Josh Hey we need to have some beers or turn wrenches.... or both, since you are just down the block. I'll hit you up.
Yeah it should be cool. Fuji is making map #2 MN Time Attack is going to show up an run timing laps. Which I think adds a fun element to the day. Also with the ability to put 5 or 6 friends in a group with you, you could all run times against each other! Should be a lot of fun
Haven't had internets to get on here in a while and just saw this. What's the deadline to sign up? Gonna have to ponder this. Go at your own pace, I presume?
There is no current deadline. We will accept payment the day of the event. However, this may affect your ability to be in a timed lapping group. It all depends on how many people sign up and what the groups look like. You are correct, this is 100% go at your own pace. We will have the track opened 10am - 10pm. So you can come and leave as you desire for that 12 hours. You pay for the driver and you can drive as little or as much as you want. Currently it looks like there will be more track time than an average driver can handle as there are less than 10 people signed up. Either way, it is going to be a really great time!
Sorry for the nitpicking/noob question, but are helmets mandatory? It describes the requirements for the helmets, but doesn't specifically state that they are required to run. Also, if I were to participate, I'd be driving my daily driver. I don't run DOT 4+ brake fluid nor have "racing" brakes. Is this necessary as well? I wouldn't be planning to push my car to its limits would more so just be fun to do spirited driving that would most likely result in a ticket if performed on the road. Thanks.
I would rather have you ask than not know. Sorry if it wasn't clear enough. Helmets are required. Helmets must be up to par per the rules. Brakes are not something to cheap out on. Running brakes not meant for the track makes you a danger to yourself and other drivers. OEM brakes on a WRX can see fade at DCTC as early as 10 to 15 mins into the session. I can personally attest to StopTech street pads seeing fade in 15 mins. OEM and OTC auto part store pads are not for track use. DOT3 boils too quickly for track use. DOT4 is an all around better option. You can daily DOT4 fluid, I have done it for years. Brakes fluid, in my opinion, should be changed every year. It costs around $20, why not give yourself the best opportunity to brake. I change mine 1 week for each track day. This allows me to drive the car to make sure I had a successful brake bleed. I also change my oil before and after every track event. These things are not expensive and allow you to keep your car healthy.
I'm thinking of doing this event, but I as well have a stock car. For brakes, I was thinking about doing GoodRidge G-Stop stainless brake lines, Hawk HPS front and rear brake pads, and some DOT 4 brake fluid. This isn't meant as a thread highjacking, but I figured others may (obviously) have the same questions. Thanks!
I personally encourage SS lines, but they are not required. HPS pads are a street pad, you will be able to find their limit on the track. Not all DOT4's are the same, so make sure to spend the few extra $$$$ on a known brand like ATE or Motul. Only instructors can have passengers. List Updated
Just to clarify, you do not need racing brake pads. As long as your current pads are in decent shape, you will be fine. For brake fluid, if you don't know the last time it was changed (or it was more than a year ago), I would recommend changing the fluid. "DOT 4" fluid doesn't mean expensive for fancy either - just go to your local auto parts store, and pick up the brake fluid they have (I normally use the Valvoline DOT 4 in my DD and fiance's car). The new fluid will be far better than the old fluid in your car and plenty safe for DCTC. If you're new to competitive driving, you won't be anywhere near the limit of your brakes anyway. But you have to start somewhere...get signed up and get out on the track!
IDK man. I was able to reach the fade point of my StopTech streets on my WRX at DCTC. I had noticeable fade around 15 - 20 mins depending on the session and I am no expert driver. I am not suggesting that everyone goes out and buys race pads. However, a track pad is a very small purchase vs a wrecked car due to brake fade. I would hate to see someone here end up like some of the people at MAP PG who don't setup their car for the track.
Yes, unless you're running an actual race pad, you're going to experience some sort of brake fade. However, unless you're running race slicks, most race compound brake pads are too much for street tires. Brake fade is not brake failure. The brakes will still work just fine, you will just have a slightly mushier pedal and you will need to adjust your braking points a hair earlier in some spots.
Tirezzzzz maybe I'll bring the stock set up just in case. I may have the gfs nephews bday as well not sure.
Yeah good point. Most crashes are not due to failure. They are due to human error. People tend to push harder and harder through their session. As they push harder their street pads may (notice the use of MAY) reach their limit. Fade sets in, braking zone exponentially get larger. However, the driver will not compensate for the less responsive brakes. This can lead to going off the track and/or worse. When I say race brakes, I am talking about something on the HP+ level. Still really a street pad (if we are being honest). But sold and seem as an entry level race pad.
But I thought my WRX came standard as a race car... In all seriousness, I'll probably have to sit this one out due to lack of time to prepare and other fish to fry (clutch replacement in the DD Legacy). Sucks cuz this sounds way too good to be true, considering the cost versus how much track time and how few people have signed up. Eff. Anywho, can somebody link me to a decent write-up on how to do a complete brake fluid change? Thanks! (Sorry, don't wanna come off as lazy but don't have internet in the new house and have limited time/data on the phone. Back in the stone age...)
With the time/data it'll take to reload the page you can type "diy brake fluid change" into Google lol. It's not that bad though. Much easier if you have help as well. If you don't have help.... I hope you have about a 3 foot 2x4 lol
Jordan, no. You're a great driver, but this is bad advice. Brake fluid and fade is no joke. You can easily get old or inferior fluid too hot, then you have NO brakes. If you get brake fade, it is time to be done for a while. My buddy Charles put his Evo into a wall at around 80 due to boiling brake fluid, broke his pelvis and destroyed the car. Good fluid is absolutely mandatory. Don't risk it.
Sorry, I should have clarified...brake fade due to the pads, NOT fluid. I do absolutely agree that good, fresh fluid is mandatory! Fading pads are not as big of an issue, especially at DCTC. One of my first track days, I drove my sh*tty auto zone pads so hard that they were smoking....but I had fresh fluid, and I was still able to stop fine. If your pads start to fade, it isn't instant failure and it's easy to take a couple cool down laps...but once the brake fluid boils, it's instant failure.

List updated. Remember to put your numbers on your car prior to showing up. If you don't have magnetic numbers, painter's tape works wonders.
Here are the times for the day. There are three tabs. Total Times, then sorted for the AM and PM Tracks. Green is AM, Blue is PM. I had a blast, thanks everyone for coming out.
