Not even close to 1 day, lol. Car was down for about a week and a half. There were 5 or 6 working days, but they weren't full days.
I don't know if I earned it, but I would definitely like to thank Roger, Ko, Fuji, and especially NUKE!
Background: I noticed the turbo was spooling really slowly (like 5-5.5k) and it wasn't hitting peak boost as high as it should. The idle was very slightly rough and vacuum was about 19inHg, compared to 21inHg normally. I noticed this all on the drive home from work one day. At first I thought it was just a boost leak, but I couldn't find any leaks. Nuke suggested it could be a cracked piston, and when I opened the oil filler cap with the car on it was puffing light smoke, so I did a compression check and the results were low compression on cylinder 2. I did not drive the car at all after this, but on the drive home it was running pretty normally, other than the things I mentioned. Out of boost it still seemed pretty much how it always did. I had to really pay attention to notice that the idle was slightly off.
I can't belive you guys I was already looking for short block options for my car after I heard about Ben's pistons. I want to know if it's a fried piston or the ring that failed. Your car looks awsome man. Good work NF team.
Obvious troll is obvious Glad to see the car is back up and running. I didn't think you'd part it out for a second. Nice job on the build guys!
Yeah. Considered going rotated, but I'm going to stick with this turbo for at least this summer. The 20G XTR makes plenty of power for me anyways. Probably too much for the tranny anyways. Maybe we'll have to line up again someday Thanks for believing in me Yes, perfect timing. Nice and quick without ruining everyone's week by doing the build on work nights.
Crank yanker!!!!! Well glad to see that everything went pretty smooth and you got it back up and running brotha! Break in time...
WOW can we consider you broken-in now, in the Subaru Wayne's World of Tuning. Have you put much thought into a bigger radiator, Harness seat belts, FIA 2010 helmet, better brakes/tires and track days? I think you've officially crossed into the jungle of uncertainty where the only solution is to find out how to ride this thing out. Kudo's to the staff and the owner for their kind hearts in sharing this opportunity with us all.
I have a DOT/SNELL 2011 helmet, but I'm not sure if it is FIA approved. I also have 235 series Star Specs on STI BBS wheels that are a lot lighter than the stock ones. I am planning on installing new pads/SS lines/fluid before next summer, possibly bigger brakes down the road. I don't really know what to look for in terms of harnesses, but I do know that the normal seat belt wasn't really cutting it when I was at the track last summer. I am definitely planning on doing more track time. I hope I can find a good instructor to teach me how to drive...
LOL I just threw in the FIA because you'll be flying with the new setup. We can discuss further in greater detail offline if you're interested in earning your fighter pilot's license later. Well as far as safety I have some very good info to share after my National BMW CCA event down in Dallas, TX. But for now just get ready for a great season. And all the best Instructors are on TV.
Winter. More tread = more grip, right? Jk. Looking at Federal 595 RS-R. I've heard good things. They run wide. Otherwise it will be Star Specs.
Dunlop Star Specs are good for the first few cold laps at BIR then they start to get slippery with a car that is making 470whp in the higher rev band running 265/40-18 tire size in Spring MN weather. In mid summer I'd expect them to get greasier like a McDonald's hamburgers on the dollar menu. But that was with me driving doing some funny role playing stuff. You and other may get better results. Federal 595 RS-R is a very affordable tire for getting the car dialed in. Depending how quickly you learn your car and how much faster you're willing to push you may want to invest in some better/more expensive tires to keep you safe. No late or super early braking either. Food for thought.
I vote for a set of Hankook RS-3. Call Gruppe-S to see if they have any sizes on sale, over the summer I picked up a set of 275's for $170 each!
