Not my car; posting up for a friend. MY 2006 wrx Mileage: 90,xxx Mods STI turbo upgrade (turbo year unknown) Turbo back exhaust Cold air intake. Tune N/A don't know if it was ever tuned. According to the owner, this happened last night (4/6/15) coming back home from work. He notice he had no boost just vacuum, the car drove perfectly fine before then. While driving passenger side in his car today, under normal driving load the boost gauge would not read past 20 on vacuum. Only under WOT that boost would build (up to about 13 lbs psi) but the car does not accelerate. After two WOT pull a burning smell began to come from the engine, smells kinda like burnt clutch. Did not notice any clinking, clunking or odd noises at all. He also did mention while driving back home from work at Eagan he had almost a full tank of gas and when he got home (St. Paul) his gas was down to the 1/4 line. Sorry if this is long and not enough info to go by but this was all I could get from him and while I was in his car. Let me know what you all think is wrong with his car and thanks for reading this.
It's a S U B A R U Problem solved Boost leak? Needs a tune? Seems like it is really ambiguous, could be anything...
Is the oil level at the full mark cause mine had that smell and I checked the oil and it was barley on the dipstick and good thing I had some extra and I poured some in and I havent gotten the smell since but I have checked it at least once a week since these engines are known to use some oil. I havent had any of the boost problems tho but Id have him check for a boost leak after checking if he has enough oil, then get the car into a tuner and see if they can figure out if anything is wrong tune wise or not and have them retune it just to be safe. Also ask him if he knows if the timing belt and water pump were done on the car. Idk if that could cause no boost but they should be done every 60-80k
I can give more information if needed as the issue is with my car. The dealership that I bought it from replaced the timing belt and the water pump before I had bought it.
That's what I thought it was too, but i've driven in cars with worn out clutch and this does not seem like a worn out clutch. When he accelerates the RPM doesn't go shooting up like a clutch slipping, it seems to hold. But then again I could be wrong and it could be your clutch @fezz
Have you checked the plugs, or for misfires? Any vacuum or exhaust leaks? With the mods listed and the lack of knowledge of a tune i'm guessing your buddy is a pretty big noob. This car really shouldn't be on the road let alone doing WOT pulls. Seriously dangerous to the engine. Take the car to a professional and have them get it in shape. Mike
