Hey i have an 06 sti with 34,000 and no suspension mods. When you are driving under 10 mph on a slightly rough road, you can hear this like clunking noise from the back. If i turn back and forth it almost feels like something is loose in the back. Do any of you guys know where this noise could be coming from? Thanks

probably the rear struts... like every other STi... mine does the same thing btw
check and re-tighten all the bolts back there (especially the upper strut mounts), if everything is tight, its the struts... the (huge) strut shaft tends to bind due to low oil in the struts causing a clunking noise. lubing the shaft (hehe) with silglide/caliper slide lube helps quite it down

i can take a look for ya when u do ur tires if u want

was gonna say the hooker in the trunk wasnt dead after all...

Didnt know if the 06 on have the same issue but the 04-05 were notorious for rear strut clunk... look for recalls or tsb's on them

I couldn't find any recalls on them, but is there any rear strut brace or something to fix this if everything else I tight and it still makes the noise?

you can take them out of the car, disassemble the shaft from the housing and re-lube. That will usually take care of the clunk for a while. Dave (scuba_steve) can do that for you for a good price.

Cool is that what most people do? What do people do if they want to make sure the clunk is gone forever?

Alright, thanks alot guys i Pm'd scuba steve. I was looking at other threads about this and some people say that the grease they get out of the housing is bad. It almost looks like it is breaking down and it is waxy. New grease alone should help this out alot i would think.

There is. The thread I linked costs $5 in grease.

I just considered it a maintenance item on my 07 :dunno: much cheaper than rebuilding coilovers every year or so at least.

Perfect, so if/ whenever the clunk comes back just replace the grease again?
