I was recently forced to pay for a code scan at a shop. I realized that I could have purchased half a code scanner for what they charged me. I'm looking for some recommendations on what to get. Also, I have an Iphone, maybe I should get a bluetooth/wifi scanner? Thanks for the suggestions! -Markus
scangauge II was what i was previously considering, but bought a car with a married accessport v2 so i don't need it... the price on amazon right now is actually quite good. there are cheaper options out there but beware of buying off ebay as some actually don't work with subaru ecu.
http://www.amazon.com/Actron-CP9575-Scanner-Trilingual-OBDII/dp/tags-on-product/B003IOKPLO This is the one that I have, I like it it does the job. Also just to note AutoZone stores will pull codes for you for free.
Now why wont some work kn subarus? Just to give others heads up, make sure the scanner uses ssm (subaru) Pxxxx may mean something else on a different manufacturer than subarus pxxxx
I've just run across a handful of threads over the past year from people having trouble with the cheapo readers on some of the older ('97-'04) cars. Just saying spend the money on a good tool the first time so you don't have to buy twice. if you're a laptop owner the opensource community has some good things to offer too, you'll just have to spring for a cable (eg tactrix). I recommended the scangauge because it's a fun gadget as well as a code reader, but there are other good options out there. +1 on autozone if you just need a code read/cleared today...
