I'll be rallying all day. Sunday if I don't go to the MNSOC picnic deal I'll be on my local home lake
We are all heading up to the family cabin on Vermillion for opener Friday night in search of the delicious walleye. I'm glad to have some time off work so I can haz jag bomz for breakfast :hsugh:
Heading north to open the folks cabin for opener. Wish I could throw my hula popper on but that'll have to wait till the 23rd.
I intend on going out a few times this year. Can anyone point me to a good resource, either online of hard copy, that shows different types of fish, where they usually congregate in a lake or stream and what bait and technique is best for catching them. I'm a total newb to fishing other than I took a fly fishing lesson in alaska.
http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/lakefind/index.html http://www.fishingminnesota.com/forum/ubbthreads.php Lots of info on these two sites. On the DNR site, you can look up a lake, see what type of fish are in there, maps of the lake, stocking schedule etc.
Well, how'd ya do, fellas? We got up to Mille Lacs at about 10am on Saturday and fished on the east side. We pulled in a 22", 21", and a 16 1/2" keeper. Then on Sunday, we got a 17 1/2", 16" and a 15 1/2" along with three more 22". We watched the guys next to us pull in a 30" and a 31"!!! They were on the spot on the spot (that we had left a few hours before, damn it). Pics to come, I didn't have my camera and am waiting for an E-mail from my buddy. I didn't get home until around 2:00 this morning. I'm dead tired.
Just got back from Vermillion late last nite. We had 3/4 limits worth of walleyes and 4 of the biggest perch I've ever seen lol. Our boat also caught about 5-6 really nice walleyes that had to go back since they were within slot limit(damn lake vermillion). Weather was great and jag was cold all in all a good weekend despite a little sunburn.
was at devils lake over the weekend. 4 of us caught 18 walleyes. avg size is 28". Our biggest was 32".
sadly no, i think it was one of the very bottom ones. there were other anglers that caught 8lb walleyes and some were well over 35" it was snowing when we were up there the whole day (last sat) but the fishes didnt hit hard until sunset. We almost reached our limit in 2 hours, but we had no light and it was too cold to keep fishin
Beautiful catch! I've tended to skip opener these last few years, to avoid the traffic and people, but you've inspired me to go out ASAP! Anyone know if the lakes in Uptown are any good for walleye fishing on the shore? Otherwise I'll need to wait until this weekend to go up north to my parent's place.
I don't know the uptown area at all but I would pitch a nice big shiner minnow and a jig head or a leech on a sandy beach near a weed edge and just drag it along the bottom. Get as deep as you can.
Here are some pics from our opener weekend on Mille Lacs. AND!!! Here is my buddy Sparky biting a leech in half - his brother told him that he would buy his dinner at the bar if he did. http://s54.photobucket.com/albums/g82/SuperTedMaximus/?action=view¤t=MVI_0475.flv
Leech is a delicousy somewhere haha Looks like a fun weekend Mr. Ted... Where did you go? I hope to get out soon
Someone recommend me a great spinning reel under $100. Looking mainly for lightweight action but aso able to handle the occasional smallies and largemouths. Gander has 20% off the rods and reels tomorrow.
I FAIL! I read "spinning rod"... So, reels: I love Shimano reels and have 4-5 of the Spirex 4500RE which has the "fightin drag" and the drag adjustment on the bottom of the reel which I REALLY like. If you need a good spinning rod: Their "Classic IM7 Graphite" is an awesome rod and around $60 bucks if I remember correctly. I picked one up before opener and was REALLY impressed. I went with the medium/light action and purchased it as a utility rod. On opener I used it as a jigging rod, and last wednesday I had to throw on some heavier line and use it as a trolling rod. It worked well for both but I wouldn't buy it as a trolling rod. Casting = perfect, but go with the longer version which is probably a medium action. The BEST part about the Guide Series rods is that if it breaks you just take back the pieces and they give you a new one. I told the guy at the counter that my shelving in the garage fell and snapped the rod in half. They happily grabbed a new one for me. Want me to take a picture of it so you know which one I have?
Gridlocked, thats some damn good warranty. For some reason I'm thinking about some Pflueger reels. Heard they make some good reels but I'll check out some of that Shimano also. Most likely put it on an Ugly Stick and see how that goes. I'll post what I end up getting tomorrow. Happy fishing.
I think St. Croix would have the same warranty, I use their fly rods and they are pretty good about replacements too. I have never used a St. Croix spinning or bait cast rod, but I like their quality and price for fly rods.
Thanks for the suggestion Gridlocked. I ended picking up a Shimano Sahara SH2500FD reel. View attachment 16391 I got to say what an amazing casting reel it is. Shimano has really stepped it up from what I remember from the 90's. It was between this and a Pflueger Presidential XT, but they didn't have one in the right size that I wanted. In spite of that I am quite impressed with the Shimano. Ooh no wind today.
Good deal, I'm glad you like it! I really like them, they are definately quality reels for the price. Yeah, St. Croix has the same warranty program and I have a couple of those for specific presentations but the nice part about the Guide Series is that you can drive there, swap it out, and you're on your way. You don't have to wait for the shipping. I'm going to go chase some Pike around at my little local lake.
woah went to prior today in the 30mph winds. caught some fish i didnt try to catch lol.. heres my best two 18in 3.5lbs... this one was 17in around 3lbs
That's from the DNR website... they're not mentioned so it must be like crappie and other panfish and be open all year. I think...
Ha! That's one way to "increase" the size of your fish. "Come here, hon, and stand next to this fish." J/k. I'm just jealous cause I've been way too busy to do any fishing of any kind this season. Nice catch!
Tonka! Finally got out on Tonka yesterday and brought the camera. Couple of northern, some bass, and panfish as well. It was such a nice night out there yesterday. Splishy splash! Such a nice night: For you Ted :yumyum::
