I can relate, it took me about 5 hours to get the oil filter off my car the last time I changed my oil. I have never used or owned an oil filter wrench as they had always come off by hand before. I went out and bought a plastic oil filter wrench, and even though it was the right size, it just slipped. My hands worked better than that thing. So I took a couple paper towels and put it between the plastic and the oil filter and pounded it on to the filter. It finally came off then. After that I couldn't get the oil filler cap opened. I've never had a problem with this before either, but it wouldn't budge for over an hour. Turns out the oil filter wrench is about the same size and I pounded that on to the cap too! Sorry to hear about your situation though. Hopefully it can be resolved before your trip.
OH that is what that is for.... this whole time i have been trying to get free bic pens. I have to say that I hated to change the oil on my 96' civic. It was in a very lame place, i just could not get that filter for the life of me. I hated those oil changes. That was also the car that I learned... "you always have to check to make sure the gasket came off". I dropped 4 Qts of oil all over the garage when i started it up. Thanks Brian, I'll keep it in mind. It would be cool to see, but I am pretty sure that I would not enjoy not having my WRX around. EBR - that is a funny story, never heard of the oil cap problem
HOLY CRAP! My car is done. The charge was less than $100 with the tow. They got the filter off ..... which i wish i could have seen. And I am leaving work (i hope soon) a very happy person.
Glad to hear it worked out. Bet it was a long day for ya. I'm curious to hear what had to be done to get it off.
Sorry to hear about that. That scenario is always in the back of my mind when I'm doing work on the car at home. It would for sure suck to have to go through what you did! Good luck and hopefully they were able to get you back up and running on the cheap. Side note, I've found small rubber strap wrenches to be the best at removing stubborn oil filters. The rubber strap is in contact with the entire filter and will even work with very light coats of oil. Best of all.. one size fits all. You can get the Craftsman model at Sears for 4.00. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00945533000P
holy crap i almost fell off the sofa when i read that. yeah me too. i asked, they said they just put it up on the lift and got it off.... so no real details. again thanks for your help man, i really got a good deal on the work they did today.
I feel your pain. Last month I had a similiar thing happen when changing the oil on my truck. Took me 3 hours, a screwdriver, a rubber malet and a crowbar. lol. The crowbar i used as a folcrom to just get it to spin a little bit to loosen up. Who knew that changing oil on a SBC would be so intense.
Well I for one can't tell you how many times stabbing a screwdriver into something hasn't worked for me. That's what I tell everyone to do... with any problem.
