I assume "your local dealer" was Miller Hill Subaru? If so......ugh. I've heard there are good guys up there, but I never go there unless I have a part number in hand, and even then, they're expensive, so it has to either be small, or I'm in a hurry.

Example. I have a Subaru parts quick reference book (they probably have a newer version under their counter). And it lists a "Gasket Kit, Engine" in it. Part # is: 10105AA240

My book is from 2004....so I punch it in to www.1stsubaruparts.com (I've bought several parts from them, including my 4.444 gearset) and it says it's been superseded to 10105AA401. List price (what Miller hill will charge) $320. Online price $229.

Opposed forces lists the "...240" part number as being superseded to "...400", but 1st Subaru lists the "...400" as being superseded to "...401", so I'm assuming Opposed forces is not completely up to date.

    Fel-Pro kit retails for $207....

Also, +1 for having the heads checked at Midwest Engine.

Ok guys need your help again, today going up the hills in duluth my car was stuttering/hesitating a little it seems to go fine on flat ground but does not like hills. I think it could be the TPS but I'm going to try some fuel system cleaner first. I replaced the plugs, wires, and pcv when I did the head gasket so what do you think?

I'm at work right now so i can't mess with it till later tonight and don't know what else to check besides what I mentioned.

First off, the reason it wasn't overheating at idle was because the car wasn't under load. You can idle a car all day and it won't do much because there's no real load on the engine.

As far as your current issue, what are your RPM's at when it's doing this?

For head gaskets, it can be bad and not show many signs other than some leakage that may look normal. There's a kit that you can buy that will detect exhaust gases in your cooling system while the car is running. I really need to get one. My instructor just had to use one on Friday on an Outback we are pulling the engine out of to do HGs on. Fortunately the owner knew enough to detect some of the symptoms early on so that they didn't drive it and make it much worse.

Thanks for jumping in, but we did cover some of this already. And exhuast gases in the coolant are only one symptom of hg failure. I have seen many cars with hg failure that fail a gas tester because they aren't always able to detect miniscule amounts of gas...its a subjective test afterall since it requires being able to see color.

Regarding not liking hill climbs, this is likely simple. Did you check spark plug gap, what brand did you use? Did you put the throttle cables back just right?

Double check your intake manifold bolts, I personally have mis-torqued those before and caused a small leak that manifested only under heavy load, i.e. a hill climb.

If it's not one of those sort of simple things it could get more complicated, like timing is one tooth off, or something along those lines.

Its probably simple. Also double check vaccum lines.

CNewtoN it was the headgasket leaking on cylinder 2 if i remember correctly, I have the head gasket replaced and engine back in and running and as for the "stutter" the knock sensor wasn't getting a good connection. I think I have that fixed as well, I've been driving the car all week and it seems to be running just as good if not better than before I did the head gasket.

If anything else comes up I'll let you guys know, you have been more than helpful and I'm glad I joined this is a good friendly community with lots of help and suggestions.
