PPG SC 5 Speed, Some Neutral Noise Normal? I just put a synchro sc ppg 5 speed in and noticed it makes a little noise when idling in neutral. Nothing major, not very loud but easy to hear, spinning noise. When you push in the clutch you can hear it slowly come to a stop so it's in the trans for sure. I just had the trans opened up and everything looked perfect. Thoughts? Ninja Edit - Matt, I edited my title
all your gears are still meshed together even in neutral, so when the clutch is out, the gears are spinning, but they are not engaged with the wheels. When you push in the clutch, you disconnect the engine from the gears and the gears slow down to a stop. I've heard that with my stock 5 speed, but you have to be really quiet and listen very closely, so I would assume it's normal since the straight cut makes more noise, but someone else more knowledgable should chime in to confirm.
this is how the gears are still spinning in neutral but not engaged to the wheels http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission2.htm
Thanks for the info  I do understand how the trany works and have even rebuilt a few. I probably shoulda added a line specifying I was looking for feedback from other's who have had/have PPG's to see if they have a similar noise, not that other opinions don't matter of course .
I haven't heard it in the readymix wrx, but that car is loud all over, so engine noise may mask the idle whine.
my buddy PPG gears makes alittle whinning nosie in neutral but he does not own a subie. even though i dont that should matter.
Yeah, the gears will be spinning in neutral and making some noise. Take the loaded gear noise and divide it and you'll have your idle noise, and its still noise. Sexy noise though. The only time the the gears aren't spinning is when the clutch is in for a while.
Maybe, maybe not, thanks for the input. Sexy indeed. It's definitely not half as loud, especially first gear, you can't sneak up on a deaf person in 1st! But it's such good music that I've had my stereo off since the install lol. Yep, all new, quiet after the clutch has been in for a few seconds which is enough time for the shafts to quit spinning. I'm sure it's normal and the feedback so far supports that, thanks everyone.
New to the Subaru world but just a thought. In my old car (BMW M Coupe) I had a lot of noise in neutral after I put in a lightweight flywheel and aftermarket clutch. So do you have a lightweight flywheel? If so then the noise is common.
I've never heard it in my car. Not once. Not sure if that is because you really can't hear anything in it due to the intense noise coming out of it while it is running or not. But since I've had them in, I have never heard the whizzing sound in neutral.
