I think just weld all of the seams on the car together. Like what they do on demolition derby cars. Of course, then you have to get in and out through the window and get a horn that plays dixie.
There is no way I'd get into a race with a cage that was a first time project. There are a lot of ways you can make a cage thats more dangerous than not having a cage in the car at all. If you arent sure why you need one or to what sanctioning body's specs it would need to adhere, then just dont try it.
Basically you go over everything on the car that was spot welded together (ie door sills) and run a bead all the way along it IIRC. So stuff that was being held together by one or two spot welds would be uber reinforced. They do this on all the rally cars and it increases the rigidity a ton. It will also help your car stay together after falling out of the sky. http://www.drive.subaru.com/Win04_ProDrive.htm I still have dibs on your fog lights if you arnt going to be keeping them.
gdamn....if you are ever bored dont say to yourself "i'll think i'll scrap all the tar and sound deadening material of out the rear of my car". argh...anyone want to come help
Seam welding is a task and a half, I hope to have mine done by end of august. But yeah, on the cage part, don't do it yourself until you know what you're doing. For stiffening, go run around RS25.com forums, theres always all sorts of fender cowls, H braces and chasis stuff that peopl are selling cheap.
ok thanks for the advice. maybe i'll just stay clear of the roll cage for now then. i'd like this to be a good starter car where i can learn different racing styles ie autox, rallyx, road racing, etc.
yeah i dont think i'll be able to use them anymore. i got the front bumper somewhat mocked and brian is coming over tonight to use his magic dremel touch...then i'll know for sure if there yours or not. more than likely they are all yours.
freezing it and chipping it out works much better. Leave it outside on a cold winters night, then bring it in the garage and it will come off in chunks. or freeze it with something like this: http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/item/PTR-7400/163/FREEZE_SPRAY,_10_OZ_CAN_.html
yeah i didnt feel like waiting till winter i guess. i got all of it out in the back 1/2 of the car. 6.5 lbs weight reduction lol
seam welding is NOT running beads... its more like stitch welding... weld an inch move an inch weld another inch... they do it to all the rally cars... especially in the normal lower classes...
^ thanks for the correction. I wasnt exactly sure abou that. As for your sound deadning stuff, I looked in 95lwrx's thread for the ice racer and he just hammer/chiselled it out and said it works fine. I will see if i can find the post. http://mnsubaru.com/forums/showpost.php?p=245301&postcount=16
another method is oxy torch. I used a gas torchto heat it and sc**** it. But there is oter methods.....safer.
Ask Mike Wray about seam welding. Something about molten undercoating dripping on you while you weld And it doesn't mean welding the doors together.
pics from yesterday. Bumper beam weight reduction = 6.5lbs seat belt weigh reduction= 1.5lbs tar/sound deadening material removal out of back 1/2 of car: tar weight reduction= 6.5lbs Justin www.grimmspeed.com
i never took any bars out 3rik. you guys seriously dont see whats new in the pic or are you just bs'ing?
I was thinking of the bar at the end of the red arrow. The green arrows are the bolt holes I think Erik is talking about...
yes!!! did it really take you guys that long to notice or you just josh'ing? if it really did that is awesome cause thats was my point. sllleeper
so there is an extra bar that my car doesnt have?? maybe its because my old L seats were fold downs and it wouldnt make any sense to have a bar sitting there with fold downs. give it a couple hours.
FMIC looks GREAT in there. very sleeper. I also see no foglights... ;-) From what I heard from Ryan at the ice race the car w/o sound deadning will be annoyingly loud on the inside. hope it isnt too bad for ya
thanks...yep no fogs. if its crazy loud i could always just put the rear seats back in..those dont weight that much.
