I'm always proud and impressed by those who can do well without college, but who in their right mind wants to dis education?

I really don't get that at all.

I grew up poor as hell, welfare and the whole nine, and was able to go to school and get an engineering degree. Now I have a house, and a sweet ride, and that's without even mentioning some of the really cool stuff you end up learning about while in school.

And not to say that college is easy (especially not engineering), but there's so much more to making it without school - usually requiring at least a decade if not more of a lot of overtime and/or manual labor.

Although those who have a good head on their shoulders usually do well regardless whether take the school path or the work path, it's just much less risky to take the school path if you're sharp.

Getting back on topic, america is so freaking great because you can seriously take just about any path and make it happen. Especially when you take accountability for your actions [cough] bush [/cough]:hsugh:

This is the point most people are missing.

Without a degree you are going to have a hard time passing the 100k/yr mark (unless you own your own business -- and then you aren't guaranteed that amount year after year).

Unfortunately, Taras has decided that all non-college going people are all going to live on wellfare or something like that.

I guess in the end "success" is in the eye of the beholder.

That's not true any more. Generational mobility between different places on income distribution is way down from past decades, and lower than in Europe. Roughly speaking - parents with a college+ degree realize the value of education and send their kids to a good college, where as parents without one don't. Kids these days are far more likely to be making income similar to what their parents were making (relative to average in the country) than a few decades ago.

I believe you hit the nail on the head with that comment. I would agree 100% with that. Maybe Taras's view on "success" is different from everyone else’s view and that’s fine but I don’t feel that the way he went about saying it was polite. It could very easily have been taken for arrogance

If you read what Taras says - he does not write "if you go to college you'll make more money", he writes "you are more likely to make more money". See the difference?
This is exactly because he says that nothing is set in stone, you could end up being a bum with a college degree, or a millionaire without one, its all in averages and probabilities. So don't rip on Taras if you don't read/comprehend what he's saying.

Not true i did not say that people without college education are going to live on a well fare. show me where i said that! I said that people with college education are more likely to have more stable and increasing wages than people with out it.

Most people made me feel like every single college student as an arrogant liberal idiot that does not know anything about "real life". And that education is a waste of time.

I don’t think that is what people are trying to do I think that people just feel that Taras thinks he is always right and he gets his mind set on something and if people call him out on it he continues to beat a dead horse and continues to bring it up and striking up more controversy even after he said he was done. Again that is just my take on the situation. Im not taking sides

    lmao.

I agree that a college education will give you a better opportunity to succeed in life.

However, Taras is coming off with a condescending tone that basically says if you don't go, you are an idiot.

Perhaps your comprehension skills are in need of the fine tuning, not mine.

The real question is wether people who could've gone to college and later 'succeeded in life' without it could've achieved more had they gone to college/further.

I agree that if you can go, and choose not to because you think "I will make better lifetime money without college" - you're either an idiot or not properly informed, which is essentially the same, cause you did not educate your self before making a very important decision. There are always exceptions, like star athletes, actors, singers etc, but for common folk who care about making more money going to college is a win, not going when its an option is a stupid financial decision.

There are many other cases, when people cannot afford to go, or have priorities other than making more money. Those I'm not talking about.

you like pulling words of a context, dont you. And i can tell you that you can tell me you have seen a million families who are whatever you describe them they are, and i will not believe a word of it. You can be sitting a making **** up and no one will find out about it.

    Support your facts.

Edit: And good for you that you went to hight school. You know how to write and read, that always helps.

Wow Taras, are you saying if you don't go to college, and only graduate highschool, that the only thing you would've learned is how to read and write? That is what I am getting from your statement. Correct me if I am wrong, somehow.

I've just been reading and not posting but as far as I can tell Taras has just called (again, mind you) every non-college educated board member a numbskull.

Maybe I misread that, but I AM college educated so probably not.

Go back and read your posts and their content. Then run your posts through your local dictionary and grammar checker. Make sure you have your homophone detector turned on.

Half the people that he blathers on and on about having no more than a HS education spell a lot better than he does.

I guess in college you learn how to speak in doublespeak and write words incorrectly? Wow. I learned that crap in my first corporate job.

No college here, either. But I makes decent money. DECENT being starting salary of 35K.

Sorry to jump in on this, my brain hurts from reading it all too.

How many languages do you speak fluently? I speak and write in Russian and English. I make typos here and there a lot but thats not what shows the knowledge of a language.

maybe if you went to college you would make 65k as your first job, maybe not.

College would bore the ever living piss out of me. Christ on earth, do you ever get off that horse you're riding to see the world from anyone else's POV?

    Doo

Speaking a second language is only rare here in America. You should know that. I know MANY people who speak a second language (and write in it) virtually error free. I'm so proud.

I know Korean, I know English, by the end of 2009 I should have a working knowledge of Arabic, and by 2011 I should be functioning in German. At no point will you EVER catch me condescending to a native speaker in his native language regarding his education level. Who do you think you are?
