So is $900 about right for part and labor and alignment to do an rack and pinion?

Does Subaru require any certain type of PS fluid or does any PS fluid off the shelf work?

Sounds about right for dealership to charge that much. The part itself is anywhere between 250-360. Labor from $80-110/hr depending on the shop.

I looked it up on mitchell, sterring rack alone is 2.8 hours, but that doesn't really take into account tie rods and control arms...so if I picked a number I'd pick the cross member r&r, which is 5 hours on mitchell.

    5x$95/hr(average shop rate) =$475

    + rack
+ tie rods (no sense skipping that)
+ consumables (ps fluid, shop supplies, etc)

I'd say $900 is good it it includes new tie rods. It's not the cheapest deal ever, but if it's being done by a qualityity shop/mechanic it's on par for market price imho.

You can can find a used rack too, that could lower the cost, but there is risk in that...
