So I just finished my 07 wrx swap into my 00 rs. The engine started up at first, but had an exhaust leak. There has been a constant ticking from the drivers side head that seems to get louder as i accelerate. You can hear it from the cabin. At first I thought it was an exhaust leak from my headers so i took them off and put on a stock unit. The tick is still there. it sounds like the valves are ticking but idk if thats it. Most noticeable towards the driver's side. Seems to increase as rpm increases. I dont think its a spun bearing because the car seems to drive fine just hard to make boost. It seem possible i may still have a small exhaust leak. Does anyone have an idea of what this is? The mods on the car includes. 3" TBE and tgv deletes. That is all. Any help would be great. Thanks EDIT: Uploaded video. Help me out.
I dunno, Subaru engines make a bunch of noise normally. It is hard to gauge how loud the sound is from the video, but it sounds like normal ticking from the valves, injectors, etc.
i left the house where the car is at. I have been researching and it does seem like the injectors could be making the noise. Its just its kinda loud. at idle it seems to be louder than the exhaust. you can hear it clearly inside the car also. but i seafoamed the sucker after the video was taken to check for leaks and I seem to have small leaks where my crossover pipes are. this may be why i am not making boost. could this also contribute to the sound?
Like I said, it seems like you're describing a normal sound. My 06 WRX has a noticeable injector tick at idle, as well.
When I had my WRX I heard a loud ticking sound and found a stock hole in the firewall that the plug was gone. I sealed that up with some product that I brought home from work and it was just about gone. If you have a hole in your firewall, it will allow a significant amount of sound into the cabin. If you find a hole, PM me and I'll mail you a chunk of the stuff that I used for free.
The noise does seem to increase and the rpms increase but not too loud. If it is indeed the injectors i read somewhere that as boost comes on itll go away. but so far no boost, probably b/c of the leak. i didnt think such a small leak can make such a big difference. I havent driven it up a hill yet. Ill try that later this week after finals. I actually do have a whole in the firewall. Its the whole that my drive by cable went through. I dont want to seal it. I plan to run my gauge wires through there. as of right now I am hoping the leak is contributing to it and its just the injectors. hopefully no valves are bent. the motor only has 16k on it.
A guy off of nasioc. He owns a foreign parts shop in Cali parts out a lot of cars. Seems to have good ratings on nasioc and is a pretty nice guy and reasonable. The motor was compression tested before he sold it to me and the numbers looked good according to him and his mechanic. The motor looks fine but you cant see the internals. I talked to him on Monday and he said if i do take it to a mechanic let him know what is exactly wrong with it and he'll work something out. I just dont want to take it to a shop and have the shop BS me a bunch of **** just so they can get money. I did the swap myself and can do anything mechanical with the car so i hope its something simple. I dont want to go through the hassle of pulling the motor out again.
If it were a bent valve the noise would be much louder. My guess is that its a slight valve tick, but I have never heard an injector tick. Did you seafoam the crankcase? I was thinking it could be piston slap on the driver's side closest to the flywheel....very common in the subarus, but with only 16k on a stock motor I seriously doubt thats the case. I would be more concerned about fixing your exhaust leaks.
i just took the brake line off of the IM and let it suck through there. I got grimmspeed gaskets ordered and should be here this week. Grimmspeed is out of the 3" dp/cb gasket so i ordered some vibrant one. Wish i was in MN so I could just head over there...
If you want me to send you a chunk of this stuf for now, PM me your address. You can just pop a hole in it to run your wires thru. It's like Dynamat but more betterz. It can't hurt to try, right? Keep in mind that a 1% air gap in any kind of a noise barrier will leak 30% of the sound from one side to the other, so like water, a significant amount of sound can leak thru a TINY hole.
