OK. My buddy at work got 4 new tires from discount tires. After they were put on she drove them home and they started making this thumping sound. The faster she goes the faster it sounds. She took it back to discount tires where they took all 4 of them off and check the balance and all that. Then they took it out for a test drive and told her they were stumped. I am thinking maybe a bearing? What do you guys think? We are stumped!!! HELP!

They actually took the hubcaps off when they did the test drive and it was still doing it. THIS SUCKS!

Also, when they put the car on the lift...they started it up and put it in drive and gave it some gas. Only 1 wheel was spinning and then the second one finally started spinning with it. Could this be an issue?

No, that sounds normal for an open diff. I'm assuming this is probably a FWD car? As far as the tires making noise, the only thing I can think of is they were slightly out of round from being stored. A lot of places store tires vertically rather than on their sidewalls and with the weather being as warm and humid as it is sometimes they'll settle a bit and take a bit of driving before they go back to round.

Ok cool. Discount tires said they will put 4 new tires on her car to see if it improves. He is shipping the tires from their warehouse which is a temp controlled building so we will see. thanks for the help.

Aftermarket wheels? The plastic ring was a hubcentric ring.

UGH. The sound is back and it is worse. Thinking it isnt the tires anymore. Wheel bearing? any input? Take a shotgun to it?

    wheelbearing wouldnt come and go.

i hate to beat a dead horse but have the lugnuts been checked? if they are alloy wheels they need to be retourqed after about 100 miles.

that is the only thing i can think of that would be gone and then come back a few days later. and since the noise wasnt there before it would have to be related to something with the wheels and tires.
