So, I just picked up my 09 last saturday. Monday morning, I was showing a buddy of mine the car, and he had mentioned that he had never seen a horizontally opposed 4cyl before. So I pop the hood to show him, and he says "well, wheres the turbo?" As I am pointing out the turbo, I noticed some discoloration on the flange. As I look closer, it appears to be rust. RUST ON MY BRAND NEW, 2 DAY OLD TURBO. So i start to freak, and I figure, before I jump to conclusions, and head up to dealership and make a big scene, I was just curious to ask.... Is there any type of coating they put on the engine parts that would make it look like this? or any other reason the turbo would appear rusted, even though it is not? thanks, Bob
rust on the hot side is normal. And pretty much any turbo you buy, even brand new, has surface rust coloration. For reference, I have a GT2871R sitting in my basement. It has never been on a car and is wrapped in plastic still. It has some surface rust on the hotside. Nothing to worry about dude.
yea, has to do with the type of steel they use.....or something. it's cast, very thick, and probably not galvanized. it's normal.
^ lol, dont get the guy worried here tim.....but no seriously it's not going to last, you should prolly throw a 35r rotated assembly kit on there
If there was a galvanizing coating, it would just burn off anyway. They have to use a good steel that can take the stresses of heating and cooling to such wide temperature extremes and not crack under its own stress. Stainless, for example would be too brittle and it would crack in no time. The thin coating of rust won't hurt it. Don't worry about it.
Stainless actually works very well, and you can use less material. The trouble is, it is much more expensive, and more difficult to work with. Look at how many downpipes have cast stainless bellmouths, and TiAL has stainless steel turbine housings. Stainless steel stays in its austenitic phase all the way up to the melting point, unlike cast iron and other various steels.
hopefully when you were buying the car the dealer told you to keep the car running for a minute if you were driving it hard.
