ok so im looking for tips on the the process of a rattle can job on a car (its not mine nor is it a subaru) my neighbor who doesnt do anything car related (does construction) has a client that wants him to rattle can camo her g series mercedes (sounds like the dumbest idea even in my mind) but he wanted to know what he should do for prep work and what would be a good clearcoat to use. i was in shock when i heard this, this lady wants her nice g wagon to look like someones old hunting truck? WTF but any info would be helpful and i can pass it on.
I would not rattle can the car unless they want to do touch-up every year... the paint will chip easier than the OEM Subaru paint. Maybe suggest that they wrap it or do it professionally..... can it be done? Yeah. It will take some time to prep. I would assume that they are going to tape it off and use a color... then dry.... then tape off for another color... then dry and repeat until done? A big problem they will run into is keeping it all even finish, Spray is hard to keep from tiger striping when you apply to a large area. You could always buy a different tip for a few bucks to make a wider spray pattern.... but it still won't look fantastic. I really like the Rustoleium crystal clear enamel on my wheel projects, no idea how that will hold up on a car body. I know mine has held up for a winter season and a summer season on tires.... but i really see the hood and wheel wells chipping out pretty fast.
believe me i agree! i said wrap right away. again who would do that to a g wagon. why would you spend that much on a vehicle and then go cheap on the paint??? p.s. again its not a subie, its a mercedes g wagon
3M scratch pad, cleaning thinners and a whole lot of stupidity. It might help if they get drunk first and stay that way whenever they look at it. Alternatively buy the wrap material and DIY. It won't be great but it will be better and more resilient than rattle cans - even with lacquer and if you mess up, you haven't flushed the value of the car down the toilet!
Use a gray scotch brite with dx101 sanding paste wet then rinse and dry car. Tape off the moldings and glass use a (combination of paper and tape) Double up the paper if it newspaper. Then get a couple pieces of cardboard and cut some camo looking edges in the cardboard and go to town. And then more adult beverages you drink the better!!
Yeah, what kind of idiot would rattlecan their subaru? Best part about my rattlecanned rsvx? It cost under $20 in paint and supplies. Second best part? rallyx damage (chips and scratches and such) take 5 seconds to "fix" automotivetouchup.com sells a good quality rattlecan clear. Their cans come with good tips and the trigger they sell works well too http://www.automotivetouchup.com/store/accessories/aerosol_trigger.aspx Just keep the can warm and shake often. Good prep (wetsand and tack clothe between coats) will get rid of the striping Derek mentioned. That's a lot of work for a "budget" paint job though. You can get an ok electric sprayer for pretty cheap... although it sounds like an extra $100 might double the intended budget...
