I was feeling brave and decided to order some Alpine type Rs 6.5" for the rear speakers. I already have them up front and just took out my old Audiobahn 5.25" that weren't really producing much for sound - hard to hear smaller rear speakers when the fronts are bigger. I just installed a new Alpine deck and the ktp-445 amp. I just want to finish the sound system with good support in the rear of the car. So now I'm thinking, if I have to cut the rear door in order to fit the 6.5" speakers (see here: http://www.iwsti.com/forums/how-install/62484-how-install-6-5-speakers-rear-door.html), why don't I move them to the rear shelf where I might be able to actually hear them? Here is a pic of someone doing just that http://picasaweb.google.com/jbounds286/65SpeakerInstallRearShelf?feat=directlink#5437809073651477090. Right now I've got the rear shelf apart so I can take care of some old tint goo and I just got to thinking... Thoughts? objections? should I keep up a progress report?
i mine in the rear deck, but there is some cutting you need to do. you need to clear some of the metal out of the way, and that can take sometime if you dont got the right tools like me, all i had was a hack saw lol. but it did make a big difference in the sound.
I know I have some cutting work to do either way, that is why I ordered a new cutting wheel for my dremel. I'm leaning toward the rear deck - It's encouraging to hear you had good results. Just bought some MDF too. Now to mock up with some cardboard.
Yeah. I've got my Polks on the rear deck. It's easy to hear since the sound bounces off the rear window towards the front of the car.
i didnt use any wood or anything, they are screwed into the mounting rings they came with on the other side of the read deck.
I'm going to have to buy some carpet/trunk liner to re-cover the rear deck covering after I cut holes in it. I don't want the speakers to be exposed. What did either of you do?
I'm putting speakers in the rear deck today. One done, still have the drives side to go, then cut holes and re-upholster the rear deck covering and put everything back together. I'll post a picture of the rear deck without the covering before I'm done.
yes, I'm very happy with the sound with the speakers in the rear deck. If only I hadn't cut the wrong wires twice from the b pillar! that and if my router bit hadn't broken - the whole install would have gone a lot smoother.
I could take some pictures from the trunk, I'm not taking the rear shelf off again - too hard to move that on and off with the new layer of carpet on it. Pictures will take me a while, we'll see when I get around to it.
