The one thing I like about post counts is that you can easily tell when a new member is posting for the first time. But, I guess I can look at the user level to get an idea too (subie newbie, subie dude, etc..) We could adjust newbie to be lower, like first 20 posts or so. Then we can keep post count, but not display it publicly and then people just have the combination of join date and user level for "ranking".
this isn't high school. I don't understand the importance people place on heirarchy. The CEO of subaru could post on here and if he has a low post count my guess is people would probably just taunt and annoy him if he didn't manage to steer clear of every obstacle that might potentially enrage someone who posts from work all day for lack of anything better to do.
the ceo could post on here, but he wouldnt have jack to say about the mechanics of a car 1st of all, and what does high school have to do with having post counts or not...... please explain....
well if your opinion is you need to "let the newbs know who runs the place" the last place I saw that kind of behavior was high school. I don't think it should matter.
taking off what you said.. if you do infact get rid of the post counts then we should be able to view them from our private profile (or however you do it) and then make more ranks (subie newbie, subie dude etc. ) because you can be a subie dude for a long time and like me i have 150 some posts and i am a "subie dude", whereas grayguy the other stunning chap with an "oh so baller" lgt has 410 some posts and he is still a subie dude too. reinstating what i beleive above--if we do get rid of the post counter we should then indeed make more names for our ranking. :+1:
I think that in the "ranks" section (on the administration panel) you can make any 'rank' you want for people if you are a moderator.. this is just a guess though - the last forum i moderated was vbulletin and it had that. I, personally, am happy that I finally made the title of "subie specialist" as being labled a "master" wasn't really my thing. :hsugh:
this! Also, I've been on message boards where people can rank each other based on the quality of their posts. I know it's probably a software thing and can't just be turned on, but I think that's a better gauge as to whether or not someone should be listened to than the quantity of their posts.
You don't, but I do. I was asked to ban Chris temporarily by another member. I was very tempted. Mike, shall we talk? As for the post counts--take them or leave them. Remove from the initial screen (actually in a post) but keep on the profile page. Make off-topic posts a separate count all together if possible.
and how would deleting post count stop worthless posts... juts ban those who do.. that would help....
But then you'd have been gone years ago, Nate!! We would definitely miss you. At least I know I would.
Yes, rankings are in the admin control panel. They can be set for anything we want. We we put the site up I posted, got no response, and just threw some ranks in. I think to qualify for the highest rank you only need 2500 posts. And for those that said "it doesn't matter" I say BS. My PM box says BS. When I turned off the off topic my box was lit up why everyone lost post counts. Russ
It would be cool to see some new titles, as far as displaying post count. I don't really care. the only time it matters to me is when I'm almost at the next level, then I'm like, I gotta get 20 more.... other than that it is a good way to judge activity, but whatever. BTW what were the post levels??
Hey my 1,000 posts came at a rate of 1.1 per day for two and a half years. I think I'm entitled to whore a couple posts to hit 1k.
