Car: 2010 WRX Modifications: None that pertain to my issue. Problem: As you can see the aftermarket exhaust coupler sheered the CV boot clamp and now it's gone. I talked to the parts dude at Walser and he recommended changing the whole axle. Although that is the expensive option it would save me a lot of hassle. You guys agree? He said I'd have to order aftermarket as my car is too new and Subaru doesn't provide these axles yet. Where would you guys recommend I purchase from? Gotta get this done before the snow flies, don't need that knuckle to fail. Thanks for the help.
Um, isn't an aftermarket exhaust a modification? Didn't this non-modification directly cause your issue? I'd just check to see if there was any damage done to the joint/axle before trying to source a new setup. It may be perfectly fine, and just need a new boot kit. I hope you are planning on addressing the issue that caused the missing clamp in the first place.
Yes I will be addressing the issue of the exhaust's location prior to replacing the boot. I should be able to somehow get it moved farther from the boot/clamp. Ordered a boot, clamp and grease from Walser. Found a write to help with the whole project. Should be set thanks.
I actually need to replace the boot on my saabaru... Torched it a while ago when doing struts and been lazy. A boot actually tore on the drivers side of my last saabaru, and I just replaced the whole axle with a Napa axle... It was fine. It tore in my last saabaru though because it is so close to the heat from the downpipe... Somewhat common issue on subarus, esp with aftermarket down pipes. I therefore recommend wrapping your downpipe with exhaust wrap.... Keeps everything a lot cooler.
I thought about doing a whole assembly, but many people think aftermarket axles are inferior to OEM. With research i found more people went with replacing the boot only, much cheaper as well. Thanks for the heads up on the boot near the downpipe, I will inspect that as well. First I've heard of that issue.
If you daily, the aftermarket axles should be fun. If you plan on doing things like auto-x road racing, the OEM will be much more reliable in my experience.
cool thanks man. Looks kind of involved though to clean and rebuild...I might just buy a replacement lol.
Involved yes, but relatively straight forward. I've done research and it seems everyone and their grandma has replaced boots with not too many problems. I just can't justify buying a new OEM axle assembly and don't want aftermarket as this car will see more and more track time in the future. I probably wouldn't attempt the boot replacement if I had to DD my car, luckily I have a company vehicle.
