I have an 05 Outback XT with 103K on the clock. I need to get the turbo replaced and am wondering if someone could help me put together a list of parts I will need to acquire for the install. Also wanting to replace the Up-pipe as well to a catless one since I've heard bad things about outbacks loosing their cats through the turbos. This is a DD car so not looking at making more power, just needs to be reliable for DD driving and road trips.

    What I think I'll need:
Turbo - Looking for Stock VF40 to replace - where is a good place to buy a new one at a decent price?
Gaskets for Turbo - I'm sure wont be hard to find.
Up-pipe - Was thinking of looking at grimmspeed to see what they got

    Not sure about stuff:
    Gaskets for up-pipe
New oil feed lines - are they easy to mess up or should be fine with originals
Clips or bolts that are likely to break and should have replacements for on hand

    Thanks,

    Scotty

Sounds like you are on the right track. Use OEM gaskets and check or clean the oil lines. I would also remove the banjo bolt screens if not already done.

You can get all the gaskets at GS too... Source a used turbo from here or LegacyGT... You can get a used 04+ STI up pipe for cheap on nasioc

Turbo going out or just want to?
I would put in Brand new everything
    Oem gaskets are fine
Look on lgt.com for parts, if you want a different turbo Here is a used vf52 turbo with 9k miles for $760 shipped

    http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/vf52-turbo-excellent-condition-8-9k-miles-200026.html

or a used vf46 but with 50k miles for $375 shipped

    http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/fs-ca-vf-46-turbo-really-good-condition-199325.html

Not sure if you want to go stage 2 or keep it stock but if you do then you'll need a different Downpipe with tune.

I would go stage 2, better, more rebiable, more power and it you gets a couple more mpg. I gained 2-3 mpg after going stage 2

Ask subielover if he still has my vf40 turbo as it had no play in it at all when it was off if you want a oem replacement

Thanks guys for the help. Looking at keeping the Stock VF40. Thought about upgrading to the 52 but decided against it, maybe the next car with be upgrade worthy.

I would get a new oil drain pipe as the old ones get baked till they are rock hard. As for the turbo you can get a rebuilt cartridge off of Ebay pretty cheap. I have a couple of bad 40's I was thinking about doing that with.
