Hey everyone I've got a problem that's even stumped the guys at O'rielly Auto Parts. I'm replacing my downstream 02 sensor on a 05 Impreza WRX with an automatic transmission. I bought one off Rock Auto and when it came time to install the new sensor the connectors weren't the same. The one I bought was for an automatic transmission and the one in my car was for a manual transmission. So I spliced the two together, taking the new sensor and wiring it to the old connector. Think this would solve my problem I reset the CEL and the light turned back on with the same code. I've read that the sensors are specific to the cars transmission. It is possible that because it's a turbo I need to buy a manual transmission sensor even though I have a automatic transmission?

Any help would be huge, I'm stumped!

Are we talking about the primary O2 that is on the passenger side pre-turbo?

It's the oxygen sensor that is behind the wheel well on the passenger side, not sure if that means it is pre or post turbo.

This might be a dumb observation, but isn't the CEL code actually for a cat performing below threshold? So, maybe the downstream o2 sensor is doing it's job and telling you the cat is on it's way out?

It's the down stream o2 sensor that goes into the catalytic converter.

LOL your confused. There are two different O2 sensors. One is in the headers before the turbo or as you say behind the front passenger wheel. The other sensor is under the car right below the passenger seat.

The front O2 is responsible for making the car run correctly. It should only be replaced with a replacement from the Subaru dealer not some cheap splice in replacement.

    So what is the code?

... wait does that mean the upstream sensor is under the passenger wheel well? So I replaced the upstream sensor, thinking it was the downstream sensor, with one for a down stream sensor?

OK so now we have what we need for info. You need to talk to the dealer and get a proper replacement of you can try and see if the the 234-9011 for the Denso sensor is the correct cross for your vehicle. If the code reappears you need to check for power to the sensor from the brown relay in the passenger foot panel.

Please reply back with your progress.

Sorry for the delay, got the sensor replaced and the CEL turned off, but now my fuel economy is really bad. Always an adventure...
