Changed the differential fluid and there was a PILE of shavings on the drain plug. What are my options??? USED? NEW? AFTERMARKET? How long until my car breaks (ruff estimate)? And where to get the work done? Thanks for any help.
You should be fine. That's what the magnet on the drain plug is for. No chunks coming out of the rear diff when you drain?
yeah you should be perfectly fine, most service manuals just say to clean off the magnet. like nuke said, thats its point in life to collect the shavings. Now as long as there weren't any chunks you are good to go.
Now I've seen shavings, but this was HUGE. The shaving pile was nearly the SIZE OF THE PLUG! That can't be normal. I took a pic w/my phone if you want to see it pm me your number and I'll text you it.
How long has it been since the diff fluid has been changed? How many miles are on the car? Are you getting any noises out of the diff?
shavings were soft, but LOTS. Don't know how long its been since the change as a just got the car a little while ago. 99k miles on the car. Noise out of the diff? err, I don't think so. I guess??? from what I've seen elsewhere on the internet (those people don't know what they are talking about do they?) that this is OK... Bottom line, I was taken back by the pile of shavings. I thought the diff was doomed for sure. The is a diff on craigslist for $100 bucks and I was looking at other options. Now I don't know. I'm thinking as long as it is working to just leave it...
