Need a little advice.... I have a 02 Impreza RS 114K miles. Tore the engine out last week to replace a externally leaking head gasket. Got the heads back today from the shop so I figured I would prep the block. Well, while doing so found one of the cylinders has pretty deep scoring at the top of the cylinder. Dang it! It ran fine when I pulled it but I don't trust putting it back in now. Recommendations? Rebuild in order? If so, what is a good shop in the twin cities to rebuild a Subie short block? What should I be looking at for cost? Or, I can get a factory new short for $1850 shipped... Thanks in advance.
Might you post a picture of it? I had a similar groove on a co-workers forester 2.5 SOHC I did head gaskets on. Slapped her back together and she has gone 40k+ so far with no issues.
Dean, a rebuild is going to be more than a new shortblock lol. Rs25 has shortblocks for cheap from time to time when people swap to turbo motors. I sold my longblock for $500 (2000 rs) so there are deals to be had. How deep is the scoring?
There ya go- you can see the 3 on the left are pretty deep, the rest I would have no issue with. Here's a question. I am 99% sure that I can use a 2.5 short block from any year 2000-2010, Correct? I found a 08 2.5 short block out of a legacy for a pretty good price. Just want to verify for when I am shopping around. Of course I would use my heads which have already been machined for flatness and pressure tested. Thanks again
This is the one I encountered. Like I said I did nothing about it and it has been running with no issues for quite a while. With that said I am not a professional mechanic or engine builder so I wouldn't make any decisions on my hobby experiences. I did run it by a friend/reputable Subaru mechanic (Mike Wray), he said he has seen it happen a lot and to not worry about it. If you are really concerned about it take it to a shop such as RS/NF/David Wray Automotive and see what they say.
Thanks Threshld1- Thats good to know. I think for the time being I am going to just slap it all back together and see what happens! It was running fine when I pulled it besides the leaky head gasket. If it runs fine for another 20-40K miles, that will give me time to source another short block to swap in.
