Thank you. I tried to google it and wasn't getting the results I wanted. I assume Fastenal would have such things.
The other answers to this have pretty much summed it up correctly. A Dremel would be a really, really painfully slow way of cutting this stuff. A hole saw would work, but have you priced a 4" bi-metal hole saw? A jigsaw with a wood blade would be the fastest and easiest, but would probably require a lot of cleanup or it'd be a great way to cutyourself up every time you changed oil. The plates will come with 5 M8x1.25mmx30mm grade 8.8 bolts, 13mm head, washer and lockwasher, all zinc plated. It's for any 02-07 Impreza I'd love to take a look at your 240sx and see what could be done though Might require an extended test-drive to determine it, however.
I don't know. If someone with one wants to come here and find out some evening or this weekend, I'd be happy to take a look at it.
I have a 120mm (and 80mm and 60mm) one for cutting holes in computer cases when I modded them for fun. I didn't think it was that expensive - like $10. Get the right tool for the job or you'll regret it. Sounds like Putz has access to a plasma cutter, not sure if that is the right tool but sounds cool.
Those sound like basic steel hole saws, which might work for a single hole in this metal, or maybe even a few. I tend to think in terms of tools that will last a long time (because I'm using them on a near daily basis). A 4" bi-metal hole saw will run more like $40. But if all you are going to do is one hole, then any hole saw should work.
If I can take a board and sweep under the car and not hit any thing... does that mean it should work?
As long as you can a straightedge, board, etc from the front of the radiator support straight to the jackplate and it doesn't hit anything, you should be fine.
Then it's not gonna fit, sorry. Offhand, your options are: 1. Put on a straight plate like this and space it down, which will hurt clearance, especially if you're already lowered. Primitive will supply spacers for $15 if you buy one of their plates. 2. Get a real fabrication shop to make one up for you with a bend to clear the header. 3. Make a plate out of a softer aluminum and hammer it out to clear the header (ugh). 4. Take a straight plate and cut out relief holes to clear the header. I have no idea how feasible this is without being able to look at the header on the car. If you could post a photo, that would help.
Mark-Gladly, perhaps we can cross train a little, I don't know what your experience is like on tarmac, but I've been wanting to get my feet wet in gravel. We'll have to hook up sometime for sure. I didn't realize you had noticed, I guess we are both Nissan guys now. LOL -Cheech
Plasma is about the quickest way to (hand) cut pretty much any conductive material. If I had a plasma cutter I'd certainly be using it, but can't justify the costs at this point. Water jet or laser cutting is probably faster still, but only makes sense for larger jobs where the set-up is justified. I dream of having access to a full-blown fabrication shop. :emo:
Ruuh Roh... i might be out them because i just got my gt spec header... i will have to check clearance when i get the car back together.
Ok, well, as anyone who's been following this can see, I've only gotten two pre-payments, which doesn't even come close to covering the cost of the raw materials. Mekham and Scuba Steve have PM'd me about arranging payment, but I can't go buy the material and extend myself out right now. So it looks like only 4 serious orders right now. Since I won't be going to get the material today, I might as well extend the deadline to Thursday 8/14 at noon. I need to know by then so that I can get my order in to pick up on Friday morning. Anyone pre-paid my that point will get the discounted pricing, anyone not paid by then will be out of luck.
http://www.qldcorvetteclub.com.au/tech/tech_talk/bolts.htm As for where ti find said bolts, they have had 95% of every thing I have ever had to get fastener wise. American Fastener & Supply 9 Golden Oak Dr Circle Pines, MN 55014 Map (763) 786-0146
And as to where to find the bolts for these skidplates, they're currently in a large bag in my garage, waiting to be distributed once the skidplates are made. They're included.
Bump. Bullwinkle just drove off with his plate for good. One more full day (and half of Thu) to get in on the discounted price.
I'll be picking up the material on Friday, and starting fabrication over the weekend, so they'll be available sometime early next week.
I leave for Obj Thursday AM at 4....is that enough time for you?? I'll need it by wednesday so I can install it the same time as my oil change
Yeah, not a problem. They may not all be done that quick, but I'll make sure to get yours ready right away. Part of the problem is that I can't start until I get the material, I can't get the material until I have the pre-pays to cover the cost. I would have preferred to start this past weekend, but only two people had paid by then.
Going to go help Amy with bannering would be my guess. I think she's starting from Motley at 7am or something.
you are correct. plus at 4am I'm still on mental cruise control which will make the drive that much easier
i see... that should be fun! I will be crewing for Mark Utecht! make sure to stop by and say hi, it would be nice to put a face with a screen name lol
There's enough 3/16" 6061 in my driveway now to cover every square inch of the underside of an Impreza. It's an impressive slab of skidplatey goodness. I'd start making them this afternoon, but I'm off to visit my father, who's recovering from surgery, so actual fabrication will start tomorrow. Scuba, PM me a phone number, and I'll give you a ring as soon as I've got one finished, maybe we can get it in your hands over the weekend.
http://mnautosport.com/images/plates-cut-and-sanded.jpg (posted as a URL because I don't have to to resize the pic right now) Plates are cut to shape and the edges sanded. Just have to drill and slot them now. Of course, drilling and slotting them is the trickiest part (or at least the one requiring the most precision).
I have access to some of the laser cutters etc, brakes and shears.. but its after hours when no-one is around... ha ha ha... not sure how that is gonna work when I get my workshop finished... but the equipment they have is like HUGE... I am working on a mini fabrication setup in my house once it is done.. plasma etc..but no bench though... YET
All I gotta do is slot 'em and tack on the spacer that prevents people from overtightening the rear bolts. You should be able to pick one up tomorrow evening. I'll call you.
Not sure you have to leave at 4 a.m. The meet up point is almost exactly 2 hrs from Rogers. Just tack on how long it takes you to get to Rogers and you'll be good. Course I don't know how long rush hour would add. Rush hour up here involves deer and turkeys (the ones with feathers). Amy
dan and I originally discussed 4am (i don't know the distance to the meeting place.) looks like we're going to leave the cities at 6am
Done! I'm PM'ing everybody who was in on the buy. In addition, I will have a factory second (messed up a hole and had to plug it and plate it), for sale soonish, at a reduced cost.
can i call dibs on that one... with the motor in it looks like with some spacers up front it should be able to clear the header
