since we are seeing flakes, when do you throw on the snow tires?

I'm waiting to wake up to snow sitting on the ground, and put them on then...

Probably this coming weekend for me... It is supposed to be cold all week and possibly some rain and flakes mixed in if it does stay cool!

Last year I had to put mine on by early oct since I didn't have any tread on my summer wheels... I figured I'd hold out till the last minute to save tread!

I dont even have snow tires yet. I will try to see how bad it is with summer tire and awd in the snow. I went through the winter with kumhos 711's on my cougar.

you dont "need" snow tires or even all seasons to get through winter, but you will be 1000x safer and have 1000x more fun with them.

I too spent some winters on 711's not horrible when they were new, but the second winter with a little less tread was pure hell. The only thing that allowed me to not kill myself or someone else were the skills developed through owning some older rwd vehicles with the typical broke ass kid's bald ass tired on them for my first couple of vehicles. You learn your winter driving under those conditions, you'll get through most weather related situations.

Well, I have separate wheels so I wait as long as I can... What are you talking about Zak? 070s are a blast when it is this cold! :p Fortunately, I get to wait until December as I will be in Thailand for 2.5 weeks starting Monday. :D ...and it's the "cold" season, about 90F every day!

I run all seasons in the summer so I wait until there's actually snow on the roads before I switch over since the all seasons are still ok in the cold weather.

^ thats what i have been doing. but my all-seasons have no tread so i thought i would switch early this year. I am thinking of getting all seasons instead of summers again for this reason, among others.

Please make me the beneficiary in your will.

Your car won't stop worth a damn with summer tires on ice or snow, let alone accelerate or turn. Get some snow tires or all seasons at the least before we have to see a "I wrecked my WRX" thread.

    My RSI's went on yesterday.

I somehow managed to pack 15 tires, 16" & 17" inside my forester today, half with rims and 1 tied on top. Dropped if off at the shop to get the Hoosier's off one set and on with the winters. Another set with new snow winter tires. I won't be putting my snow tires on till we get some consistant or expecting a few inches of snow. This is usually the time when I practice my tarmac drifting on cold ashfault and throttle modulation control.

Once my car can drive out of the garage, and I take the RS drop springs out and out the stockers in, I'll put on the winter wheels.

Where is a cheap place that mounts and balances? I checked discount, but they want $100 to mount them.
That's not a lot, but I'm close to broke this month.

I've had tires mounted and balanced for $40/set of 4 by going to local gas stations with shops.

Tires plus has handled the rally tires that are too hard for the small shops and only charged $60.

Discount tends to not much like dealing with anything they're not selling, so they jack the prices. If you get your stuff there, they're much cheaper. They mounted the snows (Hakkas from a dealer in WI) for my wife's old Volvo for free because I bought the $40 steel wheels there. I think they threw in the lugnuts and valve stems for free too.

Find a small shop, like one where the guy doing the work is the owner (like Nathan used to do), and haggle with them. I've actually had tires mounted/dismounted for as little as $5/wheel when I've gotten the right guy.

I just picked up two sets of mounted snowtires from the shop after dropping them off on Monday. And put one set on the parked Forester. Looks like the snow is holding off for now and so am I. FTW

Oh yeah and I went back to stock suspension on the STi for the winter.

Put my winter tires on last night while installing stainless steel brake lines. I was going to wait a few weeks....but its no fun working on car when its cold.

My bro wrecked his Audi A6 2.7t trying this....not a good idea. FYI his audi is alot heavier and awd. You'll be driving on banana peels if ya keep your summers on.

I put Blizzaks on my GF's stock rims today. Got them on eBay. Good deal until one had a hole in the side-fricken-wall. Mutha-f-er. Ordered another one 2 minutes later. Need to give blood now to pay for it.

Yeah it's the Tail gate off my 76' dodge. haha, you should see the closet, there's most of an engine, and body parts in there...This is what happens when there's more spare room in the room than in the garage.
