Normally I'd offer to join, but I already have plans...and its going to be cold as balls. I was out last night though and it was a wee bit chilly, but tolerable.

Damn really? I was out last night from about 6:30 - 9:00. I wish I would have known Jordan. It was cold. My non-work gear is so much warmer then my work gear.... Also, my damn goggles won't stay clean last night. Going back on Sunday, it looks colder :(

Anyone with an afton pass. Southwest is doing airfair to Colorado for under $200 round trip. Free lift tickets with your season pass and cheap airfair. This means an under 1K out west trip! If you are crafty about it you might be able to pull it off for under $500. Sale it today only

sorry just stating that price isn't anything special for airfare to Denver that is all...

The deal is in the epic pass for sure though at about 130 a day for lift tickets...if you want a cheap trip, but cost of hotel, food will be what costs you, beaver creek, vail etc arent' cheap to stay in...150-300 a night min...food is spendy to...

Stay in Frisco, Silverthorne, or Dillion. Close to the Epic resorts and you can usually find places for around $100 a night or less. Buy food at the local Wal-Mart for lunches and bring it to the slopes...much cheaper as well. I've done it twice this season now :D and booking another trip or two soon.

I agree. We used VRBO for Tahoe last year. We got a huge house, 12 person hot tub and it cost us $160 per person for 5 days. We were looking at CO and found similar deals, but ended up opting for CA because no one had hit Heavenly, Kirkwood or North Star in the group.

The Epic pass is paid for if you take 1 trip a year out west. Then you basically ski/ride free at Afton the rest of the year. I know if I ever have to buy a lift ticket again (stop working at Afton) I will be buying a pass just for that reason alone. Right now I can ride 11 US Mountains spanning Cali, Colorado, Utah and then two other countries... Austira and I can't remember the other one we picked up this year. Either way, it's easy to justify.

You have to show up at 10pm though. But I believe the lift tickets are like $15... or they were last year. I love the late night rides @ Troll! I have been trying to get Afton to do that for years.

If you haven't been out yet this year, shame on you! This is some of the best snow we've had in years.
Even at 6:00 last night I was able to bury skis in 8" of untracked snow at Welch last night! Natural soft bumps everywhere! Just like Utah. (ok not really, but it was in my head :) )
Even after gooming, by mixing in the natural snow with the man made, it makes for great riding.
Forget about the temps, bundle up and enjoy!
I'll be there from about 7 tonight until 6 pm. tomorrow! Working a shut in tonight, catching a nap and working working tomorrow.

I "volunteer". I am part of the Ski Patrol there. 15 years in and still loving it!
The management is a little stand offish with discounts. I wouldn't mind looking into some form of group discount if there was enough interest in a MNSubaru day there.

I totally agree. Last night I wasn't able to start riding until about 6:30 and I still found great snow. I was able to really beat the crap out of my legs doing giant surfer turns in the snow. It has been a very good year for snow!

Sort of jelous of my buddies. 3 of them in three different states all have had 20"+ of snow last night. IIRC 24" in Kirkwood and 26" in Colorado... and Colorado had a pow day yesterday. It was enough to get my gears going... because they were jerks and posted hella videos and pics. So today I start the process of booking my early March trip to Vail. I have never been to any CO mt, only WY, CA and MT... but I have a few local friends who live in Vail so I figure go where the free passes and free guides are!

My countdown has begun. 24 days until my Utah trip! I really hope the trend continues for them. They have had a couple of feet the last 2 weeks.
I've got a buddy who want to do a weekend trip to Mt. Bohemia in the UP. They are basting of having the most snowfall in the US right now!
No groomers there, nothing but trees.

I like Bohemia, it is a great time. But similar to Lutsen... why spend the money to take a trip there when you can spend just a little bit more and go out west.

Ah I'm so jealous! I wanted to ski last night, but I was instead swapping struts and springs on the poor saabaru :-(

I was going to go car shopping tonight, but might need to ski instead.

And speaking of Colorado and Lutsen...I'm actually going to Colorado the weekend of 2/21 and Lutsen the weekend of 3/6. I hope the snow keeps on hammering!

I think that may be why its worth it. My buddy Justin was there last weekend. Powder all day everyday. Next trip for me is Bohemia. 100%

Lutsen is an AWESOME place to get away that you can drive to. When ever we go I never end up spending more than the drive for travel time (8 hours total) , or over $200 for the trip. Airports blow, baggage fees blow, and when you don't want to deal with all of that, the Midwest just works out.

Going out west is still the better option.

Flight + private house w/ hot tub + suv rental is under $800
EDIT: This is a Monday - Saturday trip with 4 days of riding... so longer then a weekend midwest trip for similar money.

Add to that free lift tickets. Yes I work for Vail, but season pass holders like TMF get the same deal. BAM! Out west trip for Midwest prices.

    Free lift tickets?

Not everyone is a season pass holder OR an employee. I would never buy a season pass for anywhere local. So right there makes it so it doesn't work for many people.

How much is a Vail pass these days? $120+tax. X4 days, $480+Flight + private house w/ hot tub + suv rental is under $800= Almost $1300.

And not to poo on the parade, last time I rode Vail it was TERRIBLE. Colder than hell, and crappy snow. That's a chance EVERYONE takes. Just because its out west, does not guarantee it will be great conditions.

I'm not trying to crap on your trip man, just stating MY experience.

I always like to say a bad day out west is still better than a good day here. :)
In 2 weeks I'll be in Utah :uhhuh: They just got 3' more last week.
I'll say it again , the conditions locally are as good as it gets. The snow is fantastic, and the colder weather is keeping the crowds thin. (at least at Welch)
Should be another good weekend coming up, temps in the 20's, and maybe some new snow.

Hey man no one said you had to buy a season pass. For those of us that know that we are going to snowboard more then a few times a year it is a no brainer. Adding the EPIC Pass as an option makes it even better on the wallet. There are actually 4 Mountains that I can ride when I am out in CO. Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone and Breck. I also have access to A-Basin. Then add to that the MTNs in Utah and Northern Cali and it is pretty easy to make it worth the money.

There are two easy ways to look at this...

    1. I ride enough during the season to pay for a season pass in the months of Dec and Jan which leaves all the snowboarding I want to do in Feb and March FREE! As well as any trip out west.

    -or-

    2. I am going to take a trip out west and instead of buying lift tickets I will pick up a EPIC Pass @ Afton which will pay for it's self in 1 snowboard trip... leaving the rest of the season on the local hills FREE!

Either way you look at it the math is pretty easy to do. If you ride a lot a season pass is the way to go. It sets you up for cheap trips out west.

First of all my flight was $232 after taxes. My total trip for 4 days of riding and 6 days in Co is under $800. This includes my FREE lift tickets... which if you look at the examples above you can figure out how you want to do that math for a season pass holder.

Let's look at your idea of a "Fun" trip.
    Lutsen is $72 a ticket x 4 days = $310 (w/ tax)
A townhome @ Lutsen similar to the private home I found in CO is $500 - $800 a night!!! Even splitting that between a few people is way way way over the CO budget already.
Then add some money for gas....

As I have tried to point out to you a few times.... taking a trip to Lutsen is NOT cheaper then going out west. If you put in the time and reaseach where you want to go it can be super cheap! Last year we had a huge house and paid $116 a person for 5 days of lodging. That isn't per day, that was the total trip. Northern Cali, 3 mountains last year was done for about $1,100 per person. That includes a full size SUV, gas, food/drink and airfair.

Don't worry. I am not concerned about your experiance with the snow in Vail. I have friends that work and live out there and I see their pictures and videos all the time. I have been going out west snowboarding my whole life and have hit good and bad weather. I have 21 seasons under my belt, I have a good idea of what to expect. I will take my chances in the MTNs over Lutsen or Bohemia any day!

    WOOHOO!
I've got all of our training done for the year also, going from 2 nights a week and all day on Saturday to just Saturday afternoons.
As much as I love it, it does become a bit of a grind.
