Welch was awesome today. Totally dead thanks to the "treacherous" roads. Snow was incredible despite the wind. Also, fairly certain they never opened the bowl today so if anybody's debating on going out tomorrow, there should be plenty of untouched stuff back there, at least for a few minutes. Sidenote - driving a Subie, w/ snow tires, w/ a 5 spd, is like having a Game Genie for mother nature. I'm in love.
well one more reason to buy an EPIC pass. Besides the 13 mtns you can ride locally... and the ones in Europe (I believe 5). I just got an email from corperate that we picked up a new mtn in Japan. This was listed as one of the TOP TEN mtns in the world to visit. It was also rated by National Geographic as the #1 powder mountin in the world! The wife and I are already plotting a pond hoping, Japan shreading, POW trip! I hope I can pull it off.
Visited one of the properties last week. Spent the day at "The Canyons" by Park City, UT. That place is HUGE, absolutely no way to ride this resort in a day. The "lift ticket" used links to scanners that track your movements during the day (I believe Afton also uses this). The epicmix app lets you use your phone to see the data. I thought this was pretty cool and would be great for a season of tracking. I hope Vail properties decides to look at another local hill.
Yeah the Epic Mix app is awesome! I really like using it... however, I was shafted one day this season... and it doesn't pick up the times that you hike the park Going to Vail next week... I hope to drop more vertical feet in 4 days then I have all season at afton... that is 3 months of riding 2+ days a week. I have high hopes, but I think I might be able to pull it off. If we get sick of Vail, we have Beaver Creek, Keystone and Brekenridge to ride for free. So I am pretty sure I will have jello legs coming home on Saturday. Then I get to ride the next day @ afton, lol.
Our trip to summit county was pretty awesome (a couple weekends ago)..hit up Keystone, Beaver Creek and Breck. My GF and I skied over 20,000 vertical feet every day, which was more than I skied with the boys on my ski trips last year. We were a bit tired during the evenings to say the least! I'm hoping that I can squeeze in at least one more late season trip out there...
I still don't have my legs back. We skied 25-30 k for 6 days straight. At least I have this week off before I head back to Welch.
6 days. You are a Machine! Last year 3 days @ Tahoe had my legs burning... granted 55* snow/mash patatoes kills the legs a lot faster. I am hoping that I can make the 4 days in summit cnty next week! My friend who instructs out there is going to kick my butt! However, it will be worth the "hidden stash runs" she takes me on.
The annual Pond Skip is at Welch on March 22. https://www.facebook.com/events/251640665007993/?source=3&source_newsfeed_story_type=regular Welch builds a large "pond" in front of the bar and allows all to register and try to make it across. This is always a good time. People in costumes, there were a couple of kids pulling off back flips on the exit last year! I'm going to ask at the office today to see if I can get some kind of group rate for MNSubaru for that day. Let me know if anyone would be interested if I can get a rate.
We dropped 25k feet @ vail yesterday. Good snow all day. I think we are going to Breck today. Weather looks like blue bird skys and low to mid 30's Playing in the trees yesterday
The boys and I will be at Afton on Saturday for the spring fling. Usually hit up Spirit's season ender party but now that we're all around the cities or south we figured we'd give Afton a shot. If anybody on here will be there, just look for the neon crew.
So we're not done yet! Welch will be open for one more weekend of riding. Limited hours of 9 am to 6 pm Saturday and Sunday only. I do not believe the back bowl will be open, as it is very prone to flooding. I guess last Sunday they actually had a waterfall on the side of one of the runs. We still have plenty of snow. With the cold temps, it should be good skiing. Come on out, put on the shorts, have a beer and enjoy Midwest spring skiing.
Ride Welch this weekend. New Pow! $20.00 lift tickets. If you are a season pass holder to ANY other resort, tickets are only $10.00! Can't put on the summer equipment on the car this weekend, so come on down.
my buddy in Tahoe couldnt take the dry spell so he and few friends drove up to AK and are slumming up there.
