We have owned and modified (or had modified for us) both. Therefore our opinions trump all others.

STI FTW!!!

I vote sti. From my experiences with modded dirt bikes and quads you lose bigtime in the reliability scale.

But again, here comes the 06/07 argument. Same block = same reliability with similar mods. Plus, I have less synchros to burn up.
I don't regret buying a black wrx at all.

WRX for me.

STi is way to expensive for all the other crap I like to spend my money on IE titties and beer.

I pay $207/m for my 02 WRX on a 5yr loan @ 6% interest. If I were to buy a STI at lets say $32k out the door, taxes, titles, everything on a 5yr loan. That comes to $533/m and thats with 0% interest. I'll use this figure just to give some of you an idea of how much extra the STI is, even with a good deal. The cheapest used one I can find is $27k, which still equals $450/m.

That is a $326/243 difference in payment each month, not including interest, or extra insurance for myself. That equals out to $19,580/14,580 extra for the STI over the course of 5 years.

I can buy allot of parts for my WRX with that money. Brand new block, tranny or just ppg gears, with my preference with taller gears over shorter ones in the 6sp. Parts that I believe will make it perform at the same level if not better.

JDM V9 Spec C suspension $385 shipped
http://www.jdmpartstx.com/

I've argued this more times than I care to remember, but I feel Jason and I are about on the same page. Every part on the STi is almost always replaced and can be had for cheap on NASIOC or Ebay. Why do they upgrade? Because there is better parts to put on it. So for me, why would I even buy them in the first place?

Is the STi better than my car right now, maybe, heck most likely. But you can't go out an buy my car anywhere, it's my own. By summer time, my 02 will be just as good if not better to me, because every part in the car(besides the obvious ones) I put in it(with some help from some friends of course!:)

If I made an extra 50k a year, I would buy an STI. It still stands for all that is good in the suby world. But I think its much funner to start from nothing and work your way up. I know where every dime has gone to, what difference every mod has made to my car. I like that.

This may not be the right direction for everyone. It is however, the right direction for me.

*only read the first 10 posts and just posted this* Maybe my points havebeen covered.

As far as I'm aware the spec-c setup is the same as the STi's but with different springs. Is that incorrect?

Other things to consider: 6 speed, active center dif, i/c spray, fully warrantied, better resale and the huge ass wing.

Really it all comes down to money like you mentioned. Buy what you can afford and then throw what you can in to it later. There's no wrong answer

6 speed is kindof on a per case basis. Some people, like myself, prefer the 5 speed with taller gears.

Honestly, I have more fun getting my hands dirty than the end result. If I wanted a street dominator, a different turbo, heads, and injectors would shortly in my car. The 30R was attractive to me due to the spool and the midrange torque of these heads. With the short tight gearing of the 6MT, this setup should be fun in AutoX. If I was looking to swing my big shlong around, things would be different.

All I know know is the next suby motor I build will be an EZ30R.:lollol:

You can flash maps using openecu & the tactrix cable, not cobb's map, but other maps

Can an STI rack be swapped in? What is that ratio compared to the 02ish WRX?

I currently have both the WRX and STI and both are stock at this point. Though I have driving modified WRX and STI, I honestly can say they have their advantages and disadvantages. Like at BIR, having the longer gears allows for less shifting on turn 4-9, left foot braking on the WRX. STI-Having the ability to change the torque ratio more to the rear allows for more oversteer for helping with rotating the car around. Though I would like higher rev's on the STI to utilize the short gears.

Its a CAR, deeper pocket=faster car!

WRX: 16.5:1 or 16:1(can't remember)

STI: 15:1

These are either 12.5:1 or 11.5:1, pretty damn fast:biggrin:

Sometime next spring maybe. It converts to $1685usd before the money back for the core. Which sucks, 5 years ago that would have been closer to $1000. USD is weak sauce:emo:

Mmmm, someone on IWSTI just had a groupbuy on them:(

Gave a little review on NABISCO on the 11.5:1.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1218191&highlight=rack

WANTS... NOW!!!

Just wish it was one of the cheaper mods. But I suppose... It totally changes the way your car feels and usually those types of mods ain't cheap. Not that that has anything to do with the price lol

Own an STi, and have owned a WRX in the past. If I had the time I would have kept the WRX and modded it. Being that my car is going to be used mostly at the track, I thought it best just to get an STi and make fewer mods (mod the suspension and maybe stg 2 would be nice). Being on this site, I've also learned to not underestimate a wrx (wolf in sheeps clothing). I could also do without the wing.

WRX'ers don't have the immediate visual impact that say "race me" like an STI does. A stock WRX with an automatic is kinda slow. A stock STI is still kinda fast...and people know it.

I only read the first page here but I'll offer my .02 anyways...

Insurance

With availablility of used parts from WRX's, the upgrade is not terribly expensive.

The upgrades can be done slowly that spreads out the cost over time instead of having to fork over all the cash when the car is bought.

I'm broke and enjoy the prospect of building an EJ22 up that will pose as a sleeper car.

It's raining. <---has nothing to do with topic but it is raining out right now.

I love the "WTF" look on people's faces when they get beat by me. I never actually get to see their faces but I can imagine. The other side of that might be the "Laughing hystarically" look they get when they smoke me because I mis-judged what they have. Again I never get to see that look but I can imagine. Then, I can look in my mirror at myself to see the "WTF" face.

In the big scheme of things it is what it is and people do what they do. We all justify our actions in one way or another so who cares why another Subie owner chooses a different path to power and performance. Just be happy its a Subie.

Love and peace prevail...until I lay on the throttle and then its hate and noise until I'm out of earshot.
